GOSPEL: John 14:15-21 Several words in today's reading are so important that we should repeat them to ourselves often: "Obey the commands I give you." Jesus knows how difficult this would be for us if we had to do it all alone. So he gives us a Helper, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit living and working in us enables us to put the teaching of Jesus into action 1.) Jesus promised to send the Spirit of truth and love to us. Where do you find truth and love in your life? There you will find the Holy Spirit. When is truth and love fun and exciting? When is truth and love hard and difficult 2.) Sometimes a dog gets a thorn in its paw. The thorn makes walking difficult, and it hurts. The owner of the dog loves the dog, so he or she takes the dog to the vet and has the thorn pulled out (or pulls it out at home without the help of the vet!). The dog does not like this, but he has to put up with it because, even though it hurts to have the thorn pulled out, it is the best thing for the dog. He feels much better and much hap-pier afterwards! When are you like a dog with a thorn in its foot? (The "thorn" could be anything: teasing others in an unkind way, boasting that "I'm better than you are" after winning a game, being lazy or sloppy with schoolwork, interrupting and talking back when someone is speaking with you.) Who comes along and says, "We have to get rid of that"? It might not be easy to give it up, but we feel much better and are much happier afterwards, because truth and love have been at work!

For Your Information: FEAST OF FAITH

The Collection: A Privilege As the altar is prepared for the celebra-tion of the Eucharist, the collection is taken up. In the early church, this part of the Mass must have been something to behold, as the people suddenly began to move, bringing forward to the deacons and priests freshly-baked bread and fine wine. Then, after the Eucharistic Prayer, that same community came forward again in the Communion procession, and they re-ceived back the very gifts they had given, now transformed into something infinitely more precious than bread and wine: the very Body and Blood of Christ. Beginning around the eleventh cen-tury, it became the custom for people to present money instead of bread and wine, and the procession of the faithful gradually disappeared (it survives in the liturgy of Holy Thursday). But the meaning is the same. We continue to bring the fruit of our labors and to offer them freely to God. And God continues to transform them into Christ. It is through our generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure that our par-ishes can preach the gospel, reach out to the sick and the imprisoned, and celebrate the sacraments.

Living in our Parish Community… Did you know…?

In the mid-1970s Epiphany parish had an active Liturgy Committee

with Pat Pinnick as chair. Each year the committee coordinated the Good Friday presentation of the death and resurrection of Jesus that was espe-

cially moving. Using a script written by Steve Borchelt, the story was told using dramatic readings, pageantry

and music under the direction of Tony Erias.
