Dear Parishioners,This weekend we remember those who have died serv-

ing in our country’s armed forces. We also hear from John's Gospel Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”

Hearing Jesus’s words, we are invited to ask ourselves: what truly reasonable Christian is opposed to peace, op-posed to the promise Jesus gives for having our hearts be neither troubled nor afraid? In fact, with extremely few exceptions, those who have served, are currently serving, or who have died for our country in military service did so without hesitation in the name of achieving peace.

Such peace, however, is never opposed to our debating and yes even passionately arguing and disagreeing with one another about the means to foster and achieve peace.

As the American Bishops wrote in their 1983 pastoral letter, The Challenge of Peace:

"The Christian has no choice but to defend peace, properly under-stood, against aggression. This is an inalienable obligation. It is the how of defending peace which offers moral options. We stress this principle again because we observe so much misunderstanding about both those who resist bearing arms and those who bear them. Great numbers from both traditions provide examples of exceptional cour-age, examples the world continues to need ... Catholic teaching sees these two distinct moral responses as having a complementary rela-tionship, in the sense that both seek to serve the common good. They differ in their perception of how the common good is to be defended most effectively, but both responses testify to the Christian conviction that peace must be pursued and rights defended within moral re-straints and in the context of defining other basic human values."

As the Bishops acknowledged, there will always be debates and disagreements, differing ways to go about achieving peace. We must look, however, to a deeper call. Our risen Lord’s gift of peace calls us to our own inner peace and to be instruments of peace, justice and rec-onciliation amidst the divisions throughout our Church, country and world.

Acknowledging, therefore, that we are a pilgrim people, we know, whether we like it or not, that we will always live in the tension of what is called in theology the “already, but not yet.” We “already” live in the grace of the reign of Christ’s peace, but that peace that the world cannot

give is “not yet” fully realized. Without a doubt, our journey as pilgrims must always be poised towards that full revelation. We must therefore continue individually and communally to say YES to peace. Armed with this YES, we have indeed the best way to respectfully and reverently honor those heroic lives tragically lost and re-membered each year on Memorial Day.

Racial Justice CommitteeIn November 2018, the Catholic bishops of the United States released a Pastoral Letter Against Racism – their first in almost 40 years. Open Wide Our Hearts: The Endur-ing Call to Love speaks to our nation’s ongoing struggles with racial injustice. This powerful letter invites us to "face courageously the vice of racism...reach out generously to the victims of this evil, to assist the conversion needed in those who still harbor racism, and to begin to change policies and structures that allow racism to persist." We invite you to reflect on the following quote from the letter: "Love is at the heart of Christian life…You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Mt. 22:37-39). This command of love can never be simply ‘live and let others be.’ This command of love requires us to make room for others in our hearts. It means that we are indeed our brother’s keeper (see Gn 4:9)." Entire letter: usccb.org/racism.
