Question of the Week

Question for Children: How do you show that you are a follower of Jesus? Question for Youth: Jesus tells us that being His disciple will be very hard. Of all the things that Jesus tells us about the way that we are to live our lives, what is the hardest thing for you to do? Why? Question for Adults: As you wrestle with today's Gospel, what signs do you see in your own life that you are "with God."

"Roe effectively rendered the definition of human personhood flexible and negotiable" (Living the Gospel of Life, 10).

Reflection: In the Supreme Court case Sierra Club vs. Morton, Justice Douglas wrote, "The ordinary corporation is a 'person'...So it should be as respects valleys, alpine meadows, rivers, lakes, estuaries, beaches, ridges, groves of trees, swampland, or even air." A few months later, he agreed with the Roe vs. Wade decision saying that unborn children are not persons. Prayer: Lord, how deep is the blindness to which we are subject. Free us from the mindset that can assert personhood for almost everything except human beings. Amen.

Amen.

DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the Kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. © J. BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY “How to Survive the Holidays”

For someone who is grieving the death of a loved one, one of the many difficult moments is coping with special days such as birthdays, anniversaries, thanksgivings and other holidays that occur throughout the year. Because we are grieving, these holidays have a tendency to sneak up on us, leaving us totally unprepared. On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Bereavement Ministry offers a special session on “How to Survive the Holidays,” scheduled from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. If you are interested in attending this session, please contact Ursula Benitez at 909-797-2533 ext. 225 to sign-up.

YOU, TOO, CAN BE MY WITNESS

Today… Join in the worldwide mission of Jesus…by reaching to the furthest ends of the earth to open wide the doors to Christ and to the wonders of God’s world; to education, to medical care, to spiritual peace. We are all called at baptism to be “missionaries.” Please say “Yes” in this special way this weekend.

Deacon Dan will be speaking at all our Masses today on the missionary endeavors of the Church and how we can help our poorest brothers and sisters in developing countries.

TU, TAMBIÉN, PUEDES SER MI TESTIGO

Hoy…

The “How goes it Survey” responses were all reviewed and grouped by the survey committee. All comments have been or will be provided to each respective ministry, such as Choir, Office Staff, Liturgy Committee, Formation etc. etc. etc. These ministries in turn will go over the responses and work with the Pastoral Council on finding possible solutions to the “could do better” areas. The Liturgical Environment Ministry received praise on the beautification of our church. Mona Rodriguez, the leader of this ministry, and her team ensure that the church decorations provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Kudos to the team!

Stephen Ministry … Who are the people that we, as Stephen Ministers, serve in our parish? We serve our brothers and sisters who need our help. The needs vary greatly, from an elderly person who is shut in, isolated, and lonely, to the young one who is feeling harassed and stressed with too many issues in his/her life. The situation may stem from a serious illness or injury or death of a loved one, or questions and issues related to one’s own health or death. We are open to most situations. If you are hurting in some way...we care, and want to help! Each of us experience times when we are lonely, grieving, sad, hurting, and in need of care. At such times we find comfort through others who reach out to help. This is what Stephen Ministers do!! We are not counselors or therapists, but we are caring, hopeful parishioners who believe in the healing power of God working through us to make a difference in your life. Each Stephen Minister has some training (50 plus hours) and has developed some useful skills in preparing for this ministry. Some of the ways in which we help are:

•Offering Christian friendship and love. •Providing a strong support system for you. •Listening patiently and sympathetically.

•Praying for and with you. •Being “there for you” through your difficult, stressful time. We will help you “sort things out” and “make sense of things” that frustrate, anger, and make you sad, without intruding in your life. Please call us at (909) 797-2533 ext 221 and tell us about your needs. We understand and honor our commitments to confidentiality and you. CC will be happy to assist you!!
