During this challenging time, to help safeguard the health of our parishioners and recognizing the best guidance from Health Officials, St. Francis of Assisi is taking the following precautions:

Let us keep each other and our world in prayer during these challenging times.

Prayer to the Virgin Mary for Protection

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain,

with steadfast faith. You, Our Lady of New York, know what we need.

We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee,

joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us:

He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us,

through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

Church Regulations Regarding Lenten Fast and Abstinence

During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the Faithful to reflect a spirit in penance in their daily life through performing acts of fast and abstinence.

“Fasting” requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline to the extent that they are able.

“Abstinence” prohibits individuals from eating meat and poultry on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

GOOD FRIDAY is a day of Fast and Abstinence. FRIDAYS in Lent are days of Abstinence.

Book Discussion on Pope Francis Encyclical: Laudato Si

When: May 5, 12, 19 Where: Rader Hall

Time: 7:00 PM

Laudato Si is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. The encyclical has the subtitle "On Care for Our Common Home". In it, the Pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people of the world to take "swift and unified global action." This Encyclical is available free “online” or may be purchased through the parish for $12. If you choose to buy this book, please contact Sr. Pat at [email protected] or leave your name at the Rectory.

Life in Christ VII Today I continue the series I started a few weeks ago that I have entitled “Life in Christ”. One of the major contributions this reflection has for us is showing us the true nature of the human person and how the Church, informed by the Holy Spirit, knows the truth of the human person and human acts. Mother Church, in Her wisdom, knows what it is to be human as created by God and what we are called to as creatures made with a body and soul. These teachings help form us into the person that God created us to be and guide us through the confusion of false teachings by the world around us. Reflect on the beauty and truth of this next teaching from our Church and see how appropo it is for us right now. “The term ‘passions’ belongs to the Christian patrimony. Feelings or passions are emotions or movements of the sensitive appetite that incline us to act or not to act in regard to something felt or imagined to be good or evil. The passions are natural components of the human psyche; they form the passageway and ensure the connection between the life of the senses and the life of the mind. Our Lord called man's heart the source from which the passions spring. There are many passions. The most fundamental passion is love, aroused by the attraction of the good. Love causes a desire for the absent good and the hope of obtaining it; this movement finds completion in the pleasure and joy of the good possessed. The apprehension of evil causes hatred, aversion, and fear of the impending evil; this movement ends in sadness at some present evil, or in the anger that resists it. ‘To love is to will the good of another.’ All other affections have their source in this first movement of the human heart toward the good. Only the good can be loved. Passions ‘are evil if love is evil and good if it is good.’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1763-17 66).

Prayer Resources in the Absence of Mass Members of the faithful may wish to observe Sunday as a day of prayer in the following ways:

Act of Spiritual Communion: It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion is an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly embrace him at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there And unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Prayers of Praise: In addition to praying for communion with the Lord, it is also important to take time to offer God our praise. This can be done by celebrating the Liturgy of the Hours (http://www.ibreviary.com/m2/breviario.php) or through a Liturgy of the Word service (https://tinyurl.com/qmmr2qy), which can be celebrated at home.

MASSES CANCELED IN ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK In light of the continued concern surrounding the coronavirus, and the advice of medical experts, all Masses in the Archdiocese of New York will be canceled beginning the weekend of March 14-15, 2020. This development follows upon the decision of Dutchess County to prohibit gatherings of more than 20 people. It is also intended to provide clarity and consistency throughout the ten counties that comprise the Archdiocese of New York (Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess). Churches will, however, remain open for private prayer. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, urged the faithful to remember in their prayers all those whose lives have been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. “Let us pray for all who are sick, as well as doctors, nurses, caregivers, and all those working hard to combat the disease. We should also remember those whose lives have been otherwise disrupted, especially anyone who has lost income from a loss of work during this difficult time.” Mass will be celebrated in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and will be available on many cable systems via the Catholic Faith Network and its website (https://www.catholicfaithnetwork.org), broadcast on radio on The Catholic Channel of Sirius XM (Channel 129), and livestreamed on the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral website (https://www.saintpatrickscathedral.org/live).
