Peace be with you!

We hear in the gospel this weekend that Jesus appeared to the disciples despite their locked doors. Huddled in fear, Jesus came to reassure them saying, “Peace be with you.” Who would have thought we would be like the disciples huddled in fear, in lockdown for fear of the virus? Thus Jesus words do have special meaning for us here in real me. Peace be with you!

Despite the anxie es we have, the warm weather of Holy Week pushed crea on into full bloom. Jesus gave us this special gi to li our spirits. Yet it is difficult for we live in the darkness of the pandemic. The disciples too shared these contra-dic ng forces. The Easter stories provide for us glimmers of hope, and be not drawn into the no on that the disciples immediately went from gloom and doom to incredible joy overnight. St. Luke tells us fi y days passed before the Holy Spir-it came down upon the disciples, which helped them to understand the full meaning of the resurrec on.

Thus we have it, light and darkness, gloom and hope, death and life juxtaposed against each other. Jesus’ words, “Peace be with you,” do have special meaning for us. He wants to reassure us that the Lamb slain has become the founda on for our lives. I have heard stories of light in the midst of our darkness, of families who before the pandemic were so busy, now have me to play with their children at home, who now work with their children with the school work at home, who now pray with their children regularly. Though the churches are empty, people tune in through the electronic media to hear words of hope and encouragement from our isolated pastors. The prayer we pray for spiritual communion with Jesus is very difficult for me. What I have taken for granted is removed and only to be seen. The seeds of the resurrec on are like the eggs sca ered around the yards. We have to go and look for them. And as you all know, there are always some eggs that are never found. They are out there to be discovered, some mes weeks and months later. In the midst of this pandemic there are signs of the resurrec-

on!

Of course, we pray for normalcy to return, for a cure to this pandemic, for the health and safety of everyone, especially our health care workers, and for work to return. And it will return! But for now we walk with the early Church. As Chris-

ans we are different from others. We are primarily a large family that cares and loves more than ourselves. We reach out to all people, especially those most in need of God’s mercy. Mercy is food on the table, shelter over heads, kind words to strangers, blessings to those angry, calls to the lonely, hope for the despairing, and you know the rest.

There were mes I have had thoughts of despair during this pandemic. But East-er revived me! I find it hopeful that Jesus s ll comes to us today and says, “Peace be with you!

Happy Easter!

D Jim

Prayer of Pope Francis: O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign

of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you,

Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participat-

ed in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of

the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain

that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Gali-

lee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to

the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who

took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to

bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Prayer of Divine Mercy

You expired, O Jesus, but the source of life

gushed forth for souls and an ocean of mercy opened up

for the whole world.

O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,

envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

O Blood and Water,

which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus

as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You.

Amen.
