Bulletin deadline: Wednesday Noon

Twenty–first Sunday in ordinary time

We have just begun another academic year in the public

school, and as most of us already know, there is a shortage of

teachers in South Dakota. Even though I have my own opinions

about the causes and repercussions, I know this is not the place to

air those. But it is unsettling for our children and their futures.

We are also gearing up for our parish Religious Education

programs. Our parishes are struggling to find enough volunteers to fully staff our

programs. For a wide variety of reasons many members find they cannot give their

volunteer hours in this fashion, and I must respect that. There are some thoughts

about religious education in general I would like to share.

The Diocese of Sioux Falls, under Bishop Swain’s direction, is moving in an

exciting and challenging way. We are moving away from older models of handing

on the faith to a model that will address the present needs of the Church and our

children. The old ways of memorizing catechism questions and answers no longer

fits. In an age when information is literally at our fingertips, the need for

such memorization is no longer necessary. Teaching children and parents where and

how to access this information is much more important. It is why our parishes

invested in the renovation of the Fr. Cronin Center so there is internet access and

multi-media capabilities. But there is one element that remains at the heart of

religious formation. That is people of faith who are willing to hand on that faith

through shared experiences, life stories, prayer, personal example and joy. Blessed

Pope Paul VI called this the “new evangelization” in the 1970’s. Children and teens

can smell a fake a mile away. But they are strongly attracted to people who

are sincere in their own search for Christ and their own daily struggle to know God,

to love God and to love and serve others as Jesus teaches us.

So the new model for religious education is group activities, shared

service experiences and helping the children and teens to reflect on these

in prayer. Once we realize that all catechesis is geared towards deeper

relationships with Jesus Christ and others, then this becomes a life

-changing event, not an “I’m bored to tears” one. Will you help us do

this as a catechist? It will even change your life for the better.

Volunteer Catechists Needed We are in need of volunteer catechists for

the 8th grade. It could be an opportunity for a

husband & wife team to work together to share

this position. Alternating Wednesdays with another couple could

also be another option. Sharing this position would eliminate a full

time commitment, but would be a strong witness to our faith and

family life. Please pray about helping out. The success of this

program depends on your willingness to volunteer. The rewards

are out of this world! Please contact JoLynn @ 660-7008.

RE K-8th Catechists Meeting There will be a teacher meeting for K-8th

grade volunteer catechists on Sunday, August

30th at 6:30pm in the FCC. Please bring you

certificate of completion for the annual safe

environment program or email it to JoLynn at

[email protected]

It's time again for all clergy, staff, and all

volunteers working with children/youth to

complete their on-line training. The protection of

as part of their ministry, learning how to recognize and report child

abuse is not only a moral and civic duty for us as Christians

a response to Jesus' call to love our neighbor. Please register (if

new) or login at http://safeandsacred-sfcatholic.org and complete

the session called, "Professional Boundaries and Behaviors." Use
