Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

In our world of personal experiences, we know that for every

ending, there is a new beginning; and for every beginning, there

is an ending. This is the rhythm of nature and of human

existence. The old die and new babies replace them. A

caterpillar spins a cocoon and emerges a butterfly or moth. An

old structure is demolished to make room for a newer one. This is depicted in many

ways in our various cultures. Native American art uses the sacred hoop. Many African

cultures speak of the “circle of life”, while Chinese people use colors and mystical

creatures to explain this cycle. Even astrology uses this language of endings and

beginnings. For us Catholics we use the liturgical year to examine, reflect upon and

enter into the birth → resurrection → return-in-glory story of salvation. Each of these

descriptions of life also has a center or focal point. For us who believe, Jesus Christ is

that center.

Our liturgical year, or story, comes to a close with the celebration of this weekend.

The Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, reminds us that everything

in history takes its meaning from him. He is the Son of God, the King of all Creation.

He is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. His story gives meaning and

direction to our individual stories and that of the whole world. Jesus Christ is our rock,

our hope and our salvation. It is more than appropriate to recognize and celebrate this

truth. This is a feast day where we step back to look at the big picture, not just our own

tiny part in it.

Next weekend we will begin the cycle again. The Gospel

readings will come mainly from the Gospel according to Luke

throughout the year. Pope Francis has declared this to be the Year

of Divine Mercy. To help us enter into that theme better, our

parishes will display the portrait of Divine Mercy on the pulpit

through the entire year. Confessions will be offered AFTER

Masses so as to be more convenient for people and to encourage more frequent use of this sacrament of mercy. Prayer cards with

the Holy Father’s prayer composed for this Year of Mercy will

again be available.

So it ends, and so it begins again. May the God of mercy and love bless us as we

continue this journey of faith.

group will begin on Sunday, November 22, at 7pm in the

Fr. Cronin Center. Catechisms and Bibles will be provided.

We will begin with the Catholicism series by the Word on

Chalices and Ciboria are being

refinished and cleaned

The sacred vessels for Mass from both

parishes were brought to Hurley’s in Fargo,

ND, last week. The company has sent them

to Omaha, NE, for an estimate of the cost for

cleaning, re-plating and polishing them. This

needs to be done about every 30-50 years, depending on wear

and use. Our vessels had become severely tarnished,

scratched, slightly dented and some even bent over the years.

Each one is detailed by hand, so the process is expensive. The

Omaha company gave us an estimate on the cost, then we will

ask for donations to help cover the cost. Depending on the

detail and materials, each vessel could cost as much as $500

to $1,000 to finish. St. Vincent sent in two chalices and one

ciborium for a cost of $1,650.00. St. Leo sent in four

chalices, three ciboria, one paten and one large pyx (used for

homebound) for a cost of $4,340.00. We will use the old

crystal and clay vessels until these are returned.
