Leave to thy God to order and provide, who through all changes faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake to guide the future surely as the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord; when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Gathering of God’s People

Welcome and Announcements - JoAnne Habenicht

Prelude: "All Are Welcome” - arr. Mark Hayes

- Piano by Heidi

Call to Worship: (from Psalm 25)

L: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

P: O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame.

L: Do not let my enemies exult over me.

P: Your steadfast love and your mercy have been from old.

Hymn: “Be Still My Soul”

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide, who through all changes faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend

through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake

to guide the future surely as the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know

his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on

when we shall be forever with the Lord; when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past

all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Call to Confession:

God takes our broken promises and turns them into vows of faithfulness. God takes our biggest failings and shapes us into lives of service. God listens to our prayers of confession and changes them as gifts of mercy. Let us come to the One who pours forgiveness into our lives. Let us together pray the prayer of Confession.

Prayer of Confession:

God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. May our faith, hope and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life; through Christ we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon:

In every wilderness, on every road; in every moment, in every life; in every journey, in every heart, we receive the daily bread we need - God's hope, God's mercy, God's joy. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven. Amen.

The Word

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Lessons:

Genesis 9:8-17

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Mark 1:9-15

The Baptism of Jesus

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. L: This is the word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God.

Sermon: “Where the Wild Things Are”

- Rev. Dr. Barbara Booth-Jarmon

Hymn: “God of the Sparrow”

God of the sparrow, God of the whale, God of the swirling stars. How does the creature say Awe. How does the creature say Praise.

God of the rainbow, God of the cross, God of the empty grave. How does the creature say Grace. How does the creature say Thanks.

God of the neighbor, God of the foe, God of the pruning hook. How does the creature say Love. How does the creature say Peace.

Offering of Our Lives and Gifts

Prayer of Dedication:

Today we are offered the chance to become a part of your healing work, of bringing peace to a broken world, of feeding the hungry, and welcoming the excluded. Today, we offer our gifts as well as our lives to this ministry of blessing and hope. Amen.

Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Returning to the World in God’s Name

Hymn: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Charge and Blessing

Response: “Go, My Children, with My Blessing”

Go, my children, with my blessing, never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own. In my love’s baptismal river I have made you mine forever. Go, my children, with my blessing, you are my own.
