TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2019 VIGESIMO QUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO DOMINGO 22 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2019 READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2019 SUNDAY AM 8:4-7; PS 113; 2TM 2:1-8; LK 16:1-13 OR LK 16:10-13 MONDAY EZR 1:1-6; PS 126; LK 8:16-18 TUESDAY EZR 6:7-8, 12B, 14-20; PS 122; LK 8:19-21 WEDNESDAY EZR 9:5-9; TOBIT 13; LK 9:1-16 THURSDAY HG 1:1-8; PS 149; LK 9:7-9 FRIDAY HG 2:1-9; PS 43; LK 9:18-22 SATURDAY ZEC 2:5-9, 14-15A; JEREMIAH 31; LK 9:43B-45 SUNDAY AM 6:1A, 4-7; PS 146; 1TM 6:11-16; LK 16:19-31 FROM FATHER DAN Dear Parishioners, "No servant can be the slave of two masters." Jesus doesn't give a third choice. There are only two paths in life, the one that leads closer to Christ, or the one that leads away from him. A few chapters earlier in St Luke's Gospel, he put it like this: "He who does not gather with me scatters" (Luke 11:23). In other words, we cannot be morally neutral in life. We can't sit on the fence. Either we live selfishly (life of "mammon", or worldly riches, with selfish desires), or we live for Christ. If we live selfishly, we actually contribute to the culture of selfishness; we extend the kingdom of money and follow the lord of selfishness or Satan. If we live for Christ, on the other hand, we help build up his Kingdom of justice and love - the eternal Kingdom. Those who pretend to stay neutral are fooling themselves. At the same time, Jesus reminds us that we don't make this choice just once. Every day, in "small matters" and "great ones", God gives us chances to exercise our love for him, or our love for self. The Christian life consists in an ongoing series of decisions in which we reinforce or undermine our basic choice to follow Christ. Jesus is warning us that we are just like the steward in the parable. We have all squandered the gifts God has given us, because we have all sinned and been affected by sin. And sooner or later we will have to face the music - we will die and face judgment. But in the meantime, we have a golden opportunity to put our lives and talents at the service of his Kingdom, instead of at the service of self. Today's culture strongly encourages us to live self-centered lives instead of Christ-centered lives, to serve Mammon instead of God. There have been periods of history in which the popular culture was actually Christian, when the current of culture actually helped people be true to their Christian mission. We no longer live in a period like that. For us to be "trustworthy in the small matters" of life, so that we can be trustworthy in the great ones, we have to make a conscious effort. We have to remember that the small choices we make each day either draw us closer to Christ or push us away from him. If we get sucked into a gossip session, we are weakening Christ's Kingdom. If we go the extra mile to help a relative or a colleague in need, we are strengthening it. They key is to remember that, to create a habitual mentality that sees daily life as an arena in which we are battling for or against Christ. Another word for that habitual mentality is faith. Our Christian faith is more than just a list of beliefs; it is the way we see the world. Since faith is a virtue, we can help it grow by exercising it. And one of the best ways to exercise it is by developing a disciplined prayer life. Taking even ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes at night to speak with Christ about what is important to him and what is important to us does wonders for keeping our faith in shape. Today and this week, let's ask Christ to strengthen our faith, so that we can serve him better, and let's promise him that this week we will do our part to keep our faith in shape. Fr. Dan P.S. Next weekend is our Festival weekend. Please sign up to work some hours in one of the booths or stations on Saturday or Sunday. Sell your raffle tickets and turn them in. Bring your neighbors and friends to join us. See you next weekend, and pray for good weather: “Cool but no rain, please”.

FROM FATHER DAN

Dear Parishioners,

"No servant can be the slave of two masters." Jesus doesn't give a third choice. There are only two paths in life, the one that

leads closer to Christ, or the one that leads away from him. A few chapters earlier in St Luke's Gospel, he put it like this: "He

who does not gather with me scatters" (Luke 11:23). In other words, we cannot be morally neutral in life. We can't sit on

the fence. Either we live selfishly (life of "mammon", or worldly riches, with selfish desires), or we live for Christ. If we live

selfishly, we actually contribute to the culture of selfishness; we extend the kingdom of money and follow the lord of

selfishness or Satan. If we live for Christ, on the other hand, we help build up his Kingdom of justice and love - the eternal

Kingdom. Those who pretend to stay neutral are fooling themselves.

At the same time, Jesus reminds us that we don't make this choice just once. Every day, in "small matters" and "great ones",

God gives us chances to exercise our love for him, or our love for self. The Christian life consists in an ongoing series of

decisions in which we reinforce or undermine our basic choice to follow Christ. Jesus is warning us that we are just like the

steward in the parable. We have all squandered the gifts God has given us, because we have all sinned and been affected by

sin. And sooner or later we will have to face the music - we will die and face judgment.

But in the meantime, we have a golden opportunity to put our lives and talents at the service of his Kingdom, instead of at

the service of self. Today's culture strongly encourages us to live self-centered lives instead of Christ-centered lives, to serve

Mammon instead of God. There have been periods of history in which the popular culture was actually Christian, when the

current of culture actually helped people be true to their Christian mission. We no longer live in a period like that. For us to

be "trustworthy in the small matters" of life, so that we can be trustworthy in the great ones, we have to make a conscious

effort. We have to remember that the small choices we make each day either draw us closer to Christ or push us away from

him. If we get sucked into a gossip session, we are weakening Christ's Kingdom. If we go the extra mile to help a relative or a

colleague in need, we are strengthening it. They key is to remember that, to create a habitual mentality that sees daily life

as an arena in which we are battling for or against Christ. Another word for that habitual mentality is faith. Our Christian

faith is more than just a list of beliefs; it is the way we see the world. Since faith is a virtue, we can help it grow by exercising

it. And one of the best ways to exercise it is by developing a disciplined prayer life. Taking even ten minutes in the morning

and ten minutes at night to speak with Christ about what is important to him and what is important to us does wonders for

keeping our faith in shape. Today and this week, let's ask Christ to strengthen our faith, so that we can serve him better, and

let's promise him that this week we will do our part to keep our faith in shape.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2019 VIGESIMO QUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO DOMINGO 22 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2019

CARTA DE PADRE DANIEL

Queridos Feligreses:

No podemos solo

egoísmo o a Satanás.

unan a nosotros.

Odiará a

otro. No puedes servir a Dios y a las riquezas.” Lucas

16:13

necesitamos.

St. Jerome Catholic Church presents……..

John O’Neill, author of The Fisherman’s Tomb

October 18th 7:30 PM

Parish Activity Center (B) The incredible, sometimes shocking, story of the 75-year search and its key players has never been fully told — until now. The quest would pit one of the 20th century’s most talented archaeologists — a woman — against top Vatican insiders. The Fisherman’s Tomb is a story of the discovery of the tomb and bones of St. Peter under St. Peter’s Basilica and it is the story of triumph of faith and genius against all odds.
