Have you ever heard that if you want to make God laugh tell Him

your plans? This may be tongue and cheek but there is some truth to

this expression. Our plans may or may not be exactly God’s plans. If

we think about it, who would know us best? You or God? Hopefully

our answer is God since He indeed knows us better than ourselves. In

fact, from His vantage point He sees the bigger and fuller picture

whereas our vision is short-sighted and limited. We are in fact, fallen

creatures and our free-will is corrupted. Nevertheless, investing in

God’s plan, although we may not completely understand it or have an

answer to satisfy our why; will be far better than whatever plan we

up on our own.

From the moment our first parents, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God

and hid from the One who loves us the most, God had a plan to rescue us from the slavery of sin and

death. God initiated a plan from the Garden of Eden so that all God’s sons and daughter may live the

life of grace. This begins to take shape in our readings this Sunday. God speaks to Ahaz through the

prophet Isaiah about a great sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him

Emmanuel which is fulfilled in St. Joseph annunciation in the Gospel: "Joseph, son of David, do not be

afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been

conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people

from their sins." We can only imagine that this what not part of Joseph’s own plan for his life. He

probably imagined a simple and quiet life with Mary, his wife. Yet God had bigger plans which was

nothing simple or quiet. He was part of God’s plan to redeem the human race. Joseph was free to say

“no,” but since he was a righteous and just man, he knew God’s plans were bigger than his own.

The Incarnation is God’s plan to rescue humanity from choosing our own plan. His plan to join our

humanity with His divinity by becoming one of us is the Christmas plan. It is what we celebrate year

after year. This great mystery of Christmas that we remember, celebrate, and participate happened be-

cause others said “yes” to God plan even if it didn’t match their own plans. The choice is ours too. We

can continue to share the gift of Christmas and share the gift of Jesus as Joseph and Mary were willing

to do in order to make this Christmas mystery plan take flesh.

¿Alguna vez has escuchado que si quieres hacer reír a Dios, cuéntale

tus planes?

Fourth Sunday of Advent Luke 1:39-45

Blessed Advent!

Today we have two mothers meeting; they are related, and one carries in her womb John the Baptist and the other woman, Mary, carries in her womb Jesus.

The Gospel account says that John, who would cry out in the desert the message that everyone needs to "prepare the way of the Lord," leapt with joy in the womb of his mother upon hearing Mary's greeting.

John's message in the desert is the message that we all need to heed as we get closer to the Christmas celebration. May our faith leap with joy at the chance to proclaim our Lord and to prepare the way!

The Nativity of the Lord Our hearts are aglow with the joy of Christmas! Our senses are alive with the season, from the rich smells of evergreen and gingerbread to the feel of crisap air on our skin and the warmth of a loved one’s embrace. At some point in the holiday hustle and bustle, take a few moments of quiet. In the silence, reflect on the other senses of the season. Imagine the cool damp of an animal stable, the earthy smell of hay and feed, and the crisp night air blowing in softly. Imagine kneeling beside an exhausted, joyful mother and a relieved, protective father. Imagine an infant wrapped in cloth scraps held out to your open arms. Imagine holding the infant Jesus. As his eyes meet yours, welcome into your heart the greatest gift of Christmas.
