Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues to remind us of the importance of both receiving His mercy and being merciful towards others. We are reminded that we must not only turn to God for forgiveness of our sins, but that we must also turn to God to ask Him to help us forgive those who have sinned against us. I encountered the following prayer on forgiveness while on a retreat at the Silverstream Bene-dictine Monastery in Ireland. I wish to share it with you and encourage you to pray it regularly.

“Lord Jesus Christ, Who revealed the infinite mercy of Your Sacred Heart in saying: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Mt 5:44) and again, “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you” (Lk 6:28), give me, I beseech You, grace to obey these com-mandments of yours, and to persevere in praying daily for those who, in any way, have abused, cursed, hurt, or re-jected me. I pray for those who hate me, for those who re-sent me and for those who have spoken ill of me. I beg you to bless them abundantly and to pour into their hearts such a profusion of healing mercies that in them and around them love will triumph over hatred, friendship over resent-ment, sweetness over bitterness, meekness over anger, and peace over enmity. I further ask you to extend these graces to their families and to all whom they hold dear. In particular, I pray today for N. (and N.). I present him/her/them to Your Eucharistic Face, asking You to envelop him/her/them in Its healing radiance, dispelling whatever shad-ows of sin may have darkened his/her/their mind(s) or hardened his/her their heart(s) in anger, hatred, or the re-fusal to forgive. For my part, with deep sorrow I confess that I have sinned grievously against others, causing them pain and even en-dangering their souls. I pray you, O Merciful Jesus, to re-pair the evil I have done to others and to heal the hurt I have inflicted on them. In particular, I acknowledge my sins against N. (and N.) imploring You to heal and repair the harm I have done him/her/them. I ask you so to penetrate my heart with the charity of Your Pierced Heart that I will be able to forgive those who have offended me, to love them sincerely, and to desire for them all that will contrib-ute to their true happiness in this life and in the next

Continues from previous column

By means of a permanent intention, I desire to renew this prayer in every offering of Your Holy Sacrifice. Let the light of Your Eucharistic Face shine in the hearts of all who har-bor hatred or resentment toward me, to bring them healing and peace. Let Your Precious Blood triumph over evil in those against whom I have sinned and in those who have sinned against me, so that, delivered from the shadows

of this valley of tears, we may one day praise Your Mercy together in the sweetness of a boundless charity. Amen.”

The topic of mercy and forgiveness connects today’s Scripture readings from the Book of Sirach, Psalm 103, and the Gospel from the evangelist St. Matthew. In the Gospel, St. Peter is shocked by how many times Christ says he must forgive his brother: I say … not seven times, but sev-enty-seven times. Truly, our need to forgive is without end and, as Jesus further states, this forgiveness must come from the heart. If it does not, our heavenly Father will deal as harshly with us as with the unforgiving servant our Lord describes in today’s Gospel parable. As faith-filled stew-ards, we are called to a higher moral standard of conduct. Even though secular society promotes revenge and pay-backs, Christ does not want us to hold grudges or bitter-ness toward those who have wronged us. Let us continue to pray for Jesus’ gifts of healing and forgiveness, mercy and peace, when we face challenging situations. Partici-pate in the Sacrament of Penance to begin the process of reconciling with a fellow brother or sister in Christ.

Liturgy of the Day

We gather each weekend with family, friends, and neighbors to worship God, a God of mercy , a God of healing, a God always willing to forgive. We are called to do the same. We are called to reconcile with our family member, our neighbor, just as God reconciles with us when we turn away. May the nourishment we receive at the Lord’s table strengthen us as we face the challenge of forgiving each other. “How often must I forgive?” Peter asks Jesus, “As many as seven times?” Jesus shocks Peter with his but explains it by telling him a parable that dramatically illus-trates the importance of forgiveness. Sirach too teach-es us a lesson contrasting vengeance and forgiveness. “We are the Lord’s,” Paul reminds us, so as we listen to today’s readings let us hear what the Lord is calling us to do. .

Serving St. Scholastica Parish For Over 30 Years

The Lord is kind and merciful and so we offer our peti-tions to God seeking a response of kindness and mercy:

That all Church leaders will inspire in us a willingness to forgive those who have sinned against us, we pray to the Lord…

That the leaders of nations will courageously seek rec-onciliation and peace, we pray to the Lord…

For our grandparents, living and deceased, in thanks-giving for all the blessings we have received from them and for the prominent role they have played in many of our lives, we pray to the Lord . . .

For catechists and all who teach the faith to children, catechumens, and learners of all ages, that their minis-try may help both student and teacher grow in knowledge and passion for their faith, we pray to the Lord. . .

That those who have died, especially Thomas Wilson, Mary Madigan and Kathy Surowiec, we pray to the Lord...

For the intentions of this Mass, we pray to the Lord. . .
