12 S I O T JUNE 21, 2020 Scripture Insights

Our readings from Romans provides a twofold contrast of the impact that Adam’s and Jesus’ re-spective acts have on humanity. First, Adam’s sin leads to death and condemnation (consider the Book of Genesis, starting with Cain’s murder of Abel, to all the violence and deaths that follow, including Noah and the flood). Jesus’ gift, how-ever, brings about justification. Second, Paul us-es the phrase “how much more” twice in quick succession (cf. 5:15, 17) to imply that Jesus’ gift has a potentially grater scale of impact, even or especially when Paul has already stated that Ad-am’s sin impacted “all.” This is understandable given Paul’s emphatic description of Jesus’ act as “grace” and a “gift.” Each of those terms signifies a sense of extravagant generosity (cf. Romans 5:6-11. A gift, no matter how generous, cannot be re-ceived until it is recognized. We see Jesus send-ing out the Twelve in Matthew 10 and, in the pro-cess, warning them of inevitable sufferings but also assuring them of God’s salvation. Paul’s Letter to the Romans will help us to make sense of his juxtaposition of persecution and de-liverance, which is also found in today’s Old Tes-tament readings. In his contrast of Adam and Je-sus, Paul presents a conflict of two powers: the old power of violence and death against the new power of justice and life. Receiving Jesus’ free gift of grace is to enter into this conflict, as Paul makes clear in Romans 5:1-5. These resistances, persecutions, and sufferings, however, point to and even prove the coming of the messianic age. That is why Paul suggests that current experienc-es of suffering can lead to endurance, character, and hope. ♦ Cain’s killing of Abel is a fratricide. How

may we think of the violence and deaths around us in similar terms?

♦ What are the violent, death-dealing, and un-

just forces in our society today? ♦ How may we, as followers of Jesus, practice a

generous and extravagant welcome today?

A Father’s Day Prayer

God our Father, you govern and protect your people

And shepherd them with a father’s love. You place a father in a family As a sign of your love, care,

and constant protection.

May fathers everywhere be faithful To the example shown in the Scriptures:

Steadfast in love, forgiving Transgressions, sustaining the family,

Caring for those in need.

Give your wisdom to fathers that they may encourage and guide their children.

Keep them healthy so they may support a family.

Guide every father with the spirit of

your love that they may grow in holiness and draw their family ever closer to you.

Amen.

CENSUS 2020 HEAR ME. SEE ME. COUNT ME.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

In this New COVID – 19 environment Louisiana desperately needs every federal dollars we can get. Funding for Education, Healthcare, Affordable Housing, Public Safety, Street and Infrastructure Repair is determined by census data. Programs such as Childcare Assistance (CCAP), Head Start, Medicaid and Medicare, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC, FEMA, Foster Care programs and Affordable Housing depend on these federal dollars. Your participation guaran-tees more resources coming to your communi-ty!! For each person who goes uncounted Loui-siana loses $2,291.00 each year for 10 years. That is a lost to our communities as well. That’s less money for our children, the elderly, hospitals, streets, pumping stations, police and fire stations. Can we count on you to complete your census either online, by phone or mail? 9 Questions + 10 Minutes = 10 years of funding. Convince five (5) family members or friends to complete their census as well.

Micah Project St. Peter Claver Team along with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Power Coalition are working together to be sure our com-munities are in the 2020 Census #

We will be contacting you soon. Complete the Census: By Paper with the Census form that was mailed to your house; Online at My2020census.gov; By phone : 1-844-330-2020.

Lord Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father, and Mary Immaculate give to our young people the gener-osity necessary to follow Your call and the cour-age required to overcome all obstacles to their vocation. Our love, sympathy and prayers go to our Parish-ioners who have lost family members during these difficult times. OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence,

murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to

be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady

of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

Bible Study Quote: “Therefore, do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the dark-ness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. “He’s Got Your Back (Romans 5:12-15)...In this reading from the Let-ter to the Romans, St. Paul shows how God loved and supported mankind when we were at our worst. In verses 5-8 he explains how Jesus vindi-cated man from sin. Spiritual death, physical death and eternal death came to us through Adam's sins. Adam was our representative and he failed when tempted. Because of his failure, humanity is gripped with open rebellion against the Creator. But we can’t blame Adam, because we sin on our own (v.12). Humanity tried to control these tendencies through laws. The Gentiles tried re-straint through the natural law and other codifica-tions. The Jews tried restraint under the Law of Moses (see 2:14-15). Yet, all failed, and all were subject to death. In the face of this failure, God said, I’ve got your back. DISCUSSION QUES-TIONS: Who do you reflect the most in your daily life, Jesus, or Adam?
