Easter Sunday - April 1, 2018
Reflection: What words or phrases jumped out at you during the Liturgy of the Word on Sunday? What connection do those words or phrases have to your day-to-day life? (Why do you think they jumped out at you?) What might God be trying to say to you through these words or phrases? What response should you make? What action should you take?
Alternative: Reflect upon and/or share about your experience of the Lord, in your life? Where is the Galilee where you see him? How has your experience of the Lord changed you? How do you share, or how should you be sharing, your experience of the Lord?
Gospel On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He said to them, “Do not be amazed!
You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been
raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they
laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter,
‘He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see
him, as he told you.’” Mk 16:6-7
FIRST READING: Acts:10:34:1034a, 37-43 SECOND READING: Colossians:3:1-4

From the Pastor
Happy Easter to you all.
Today we celebrate resurrection, new life. And, it’s not just life as it used to be. It’s the fullness of life, which Jesus offers.
In ancient times most believed that this world is all there is. By the time of Jesus, a significant portion of the Jewish community believed in resurrection, though. What we
celebrate today clinched it and now pretty much everyone believes in an afterlife.
Sometimes I wonder if that’s all people think being a disciple of Jesus is about. Do we simply believe that what Jesus said to Mary is all that it is about; “Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” (Jn 11:25-26)
I believe what he said to Mary but also I think the meaning of that statement hinges on the interpretation of “whoever believes in me”. I know it’s not just
intellectual assent. It’s way more than that. It is believing in Jesus like we believe in any person we trust. It’s like I trusted my mother to always love me and do what was right for me, to always support me in growing up to be the best person I could be. I believed in her and she never let me down. I think that is what it means to believe in the Lord.
To believe in the Lord, then, means to come to know Him, to come to trust Him and to do as he wants us do. And when we do, we discover a life that is more full and more fulfilling. And, when we live the fullness of life here we open ourselves to the fullness of life in the hereafter. I believe that is what it means to believe in Him.
That’s why we celebrate Easter because we believe in the fullness of life which the Resurrected One promises. And, every Sunday in our tradition is a little Easter. That is the way it has been from the very beginning. Immedi-ately, Jesus’ disciples began celebrating Eucharist on every Sunday, the Lord’s Day. They celebrated every Sunday as we celebrate every Sunday, so as not to forget who we are, so as not to forget the promise, so as to live the promise even now.
Happy Easter. May your relationship with the Lord grow every day. May we, as a community of disciples, continue to grow in relationship with Him and with each other.
In His service,
Fr. Ron

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday The first light of Easter dawn had begun to creep over the horizon. The steadfast women from Friday's gory events are returning again to the body of their Lord. "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" How quickly we return to mundane concerns and how thoroughly God wants to surprise us! Imagine the utter shock upon seeing the stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and a stranger clothed in light proclaiming the impossible. "You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here." He is risen indeed and the world will never be the same. We know from other Gospel passages that Mary Magdalene made haste to the disciples to proclaim the Good News. We know that Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see for themselves. We know that the wonder and awe of the Resurrection permeated the lives of the apostles until their own dying day. Can we comprehend the utterly world-changing nature of this surprise? The historical reanimation of a dead man is of no real value to us. But we know that Easter Sunday is so much more. By the Resurrection of Jesus, life has triumphed over death for us all. The gates of heaven are opened and the treasury of graces is poured out upon the here and now. This Resurrection Day, let us draw near, amazed yet unafraid, to the risen Christ. Let us recall the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, "Jesus is not a character from the past. He lives, and he walks before us as one who is alive, he calls us to follow him, the living one, and in this way to discover for ourselves the path of life" (Easter Vigil, April 15, 2006).
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Christ is risen indeed! We have arrived at the penultimate feast on the Church's calendar, the cause of our joy and our hope. Life has defeated death. Sorrow and suffering do not have the last say. In the resurrection of Jesus we see many reasons to rejoice. Not only has Jesus conquered the specter of visible death, but he restores to us graced life. On Holy Satur-day, Jesus descended to the dead and delivered the just souls into heavenly paradise. What are our own Saturday tombs? Jesus has the power to open them all. That is our invitation, this day most of all. May resurrec-tion joy fill your heart, your family, your workplace, and your community. Happy Easter!
WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: What is the most important holiday on the Catholic calendar? Answer: In our daily life, we often refer to "holidays." The word "holiday" actually comes from the word "holy day." More than a simple celebration or family gathering, these days connect us to God in a unique way. We re-member - and share in - the events in God's plan of salvation. Some feasts may be celebrated with more traditions and secular attention, like Christ-mas, but the most important holy day is Easter. When Jesus died and rose again, he destroyed the ultimate weapon of sin and made it possible for us to have eternal life with him in Heaven. With-out the resurrection, St. Paul tells us, our faith is in vain. This past Holy Week, we walked through the Paschal Mystery, the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. Easter is commemorated each time we celebrate the Mass. As St. John Paul II said, "we are an Easter people and alleluia is our song!" Jesus was born for Easter. Our joyful celebration of the resurrection is at the core of what it means to be a Christian!

Good and gracious God, We thank you for all we are, and all we have. Everything is a gift from your infinite generosity.
We marvel how bountiful is your kindness. We celebrate the year of your enduring mercy. As we explore our responsibility to
be good stewards, Fill us with the compassion of Jesus, your Son. Give us eyes to see the needs of those around us,
In the faces of our neighbors near and far. Give us hearts that are moved by the pleas of those who cry out. On behalf of the
children, the refugees, the sick, and the suffering. Give us hands that are eager to share what has been entrusted to us. For the
homeless and those alone in their homes. Give us feet to venture wherever the Spirit leads. For the mission to bring your good news to all. As we resolve to be mindful of the needs of others, we pray that, You instill in us your generosity, your kindness, and your mercy. Free us from all attachments to the things of
this world. Keep us focused in our mission of good stewardship. Give us the grace to generously support the Annual Catholic
Appeal so that we may faithfully do the work of Your Church. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
