Sibling Rivalry and Parental Responsibility The family is the first and oldest human institution, and to this institution God gave the command in Genesis 1:28 “be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it”.
From the first children: Cain and Abel, Isaac’s and Rebecca’s sons Essau and Jacob, Jacob’s children, David’s children and others till date. There have existed a rivalry among children which parents may at times exacerbate by the greater level of affection shown to one child or children over other sibling/siblings. This Zoom talk intends to explore sibling rivalry through the Scriptures and our contemporary lived experiences and the impartial role parents have to love, mediate and resolve some of these rivalries so that they don’t continue into adulthood. This talk by 7 pm on the 9th of February is for parishioners of St. Mary Mother of God, Sylva and St. Therese, Mooresville and others interested, would be beneficial for parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts. We pray for the peaceful repose of SK Roger Grenier, parishioner who passed last Monday on the 25th of January 2021. May God grant him eternal rest and consolation to his wife Gene and their family. There was a funeral service for him last Friday at the Appalachian.
There will be Mass this Tuesday by 5 pm to celebrate the feast of Presentation of Christ and the World Day of all Religious Concreated Life. There will be blessing for all candles at the beginning of the Mass.
There will be a blessing of throats at all the Masses this Sunday and on Wednesday which is memorial of St Blaise whose intercession we ask for healing and protection from all throat diseases.
As Pastor, I would like to thank you for your generosity for the DSA contributions for 2020. Our Bishop, Bishop Jugis, would also like to extend his gratitude for your commitment in the DSA and will be sending out letters this week. 1) We are appealing to parishioners to please leave a voice mail when you call the office or Pastor’s emergency line indicating; name, call back number, and purpose of the call. Since our Parish staff are part-time and are not in the office most part of the day and every day of the week, a voice mail is a major way to sort out the Parish calls from many Robo/Spam calls that call into the office.
2) Ash Wednesday is on February 17th this year and the ash that will be sprinkled on our heads is made from the burnt palms of last year’s Palm Sunday. Please bring in your palms from last year and put them in the transparent plastic receptor that will be kept in front of the kitchen inside the Narthex.
3) The Holy Land group from Bethlehem will be displaying carvings from Christians from Bethlehem in the Narthex after Mass on January 30th and 31st. Due to the current situation and COVID-19, the catholic Christian of the Holy Land are struggling to make ends meet. Since the wood carving is the only source of income as pilgrims are banned from visiting until further notice and pandemic measures have affected all the business sectors, these Christians find themselves afraid and a deep sense of loss. May I ask you for your generous stop at their display after the mass and purchase one of our items. Your purchase supports the Catholic Christian of the holy land to remain in the Holy Land.
What do you really know about the Death Penalty?
As Catholics, we believe all life is sacred. That no one is to judge, but God. Right? But, what about murderers? Doesn’t the Bible say “an eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth”? Here’s some facts on the Death Penalty:
Since 1976 when the death penalty was re-instated, 1,516 people have been executed. It’s legal in 28 states (including NC). As of July 20, 2020, there are 2,620 people on death row. 137 people in the state of NC – 135
males, and 2 females. Did you know it’s less expensive on the state (and therefore the taxpayer) to sentence someone to life in prison, then the death penalty sentence? Many people think the death penalty is less, as the person is not ‘draining the system anymore’. Here are the facts: Legal costs – most people who face this, cannot afford their own attorney. So, a public defender (usually two given the severity of the sentence) is assigned. Pre-trial costs – Capital punishment is far more complicated and take considerably longer to go to trial. Many experts are called in, and a lot more evidence is required. Taxpayers pay for all these expenses. Trial – Jury selection is considerably longer to vet through the jurors. The trial can last up to four times longer requiring jury, and attorney compensation, along with court personal, and other court related costs. Incarceration – Most death row inmates are subject to solitary confinement, which requires special facility section, more security, and accommodations. Appeals – Every prisoner is entitled to a series of appeals. Given the severity of this punishmet, every effort is made to ensure there are no mistakes. Sadly, there still are today, and innocent people have been executed. Did you know that in 2012 a study was done that proved it is $1,000,000,000 more expensive to seek the death penalty, than life in prison? Can we take that $1 Million and put it to education? Gang prevention? Drug & Alcohol Treatment Centers? Mental Health Services? Maybe even state funded grief counselling for victims’ families. The list goes on of the good that can be done with these funds. Luke 23:34: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” As Catholics, we need to practice forgiving, as all life is sacred. All Gods people have the opportunity for redemption. Who are we to take that opportunity away?

Segunda Lectura 1 Cor 7, 32-35 Hermanos: Yo quisiera que ustedes vivieran sin preocupaciones. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
IV Domingo Ordinario Primera Lectura Dt 18, 15-20 En aquellos días, habló Moisés al pueblo, diciendo: “El Señor Dios hará surgir en medio de ustedes, entre sus hermanos, un profeta como yo. A él lo escucharán. Eso es lo que pidieron al Señor, su Dios, cuando estaban reunidos en el monte Horeb: ‘No queremos volver a oír la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, ni volver a ver otra vez ese gran fuego; pues no queremos morir’. El Señor me respondió: ‘Está bien lo que han dicho. Yo haré surgir en medio de sus hermanos un profeta como tú. Pondré mis palabras en su boca y él dirá lo que le mande yo. A quien no escuche las palabras que él pronuncie en mi nombre, yo le pediré cuentas. Pero el profeta que se atreva a decir en mi nombre lo que yo no le haya mandado, o hable en nombre de otros dioses, será reo de muerte’ ”.

R. Señor, que no seamos sordos a tu voz. Vengan, lancemos vivas al Señor, aclamemos al Dios que nos salva.
Acerquémonos a él, llenos de júbilo, y démosle gracias. R.

adoremos y bendigamos al Señor, que nos hizo, pues él es nuestro Dios y nosotros, su pueblo; él es nuestro pastor y nosotros, sus ovejas. R.

"No endurezcan su corazón, como el día de la rebelión en el desierto,
