continued report from Susan LeeSTUDENT ATTENDANCE/ABSENCEAs of Monday, the 30th of July, all parents and guardians will be notified via SMS of your child/ren’s absence. An SMS will be sent out at 10:00am to alert you of your child/ren’s absence and that no explanation has been received. Please update your mobile contact numbers provided to the school on our parent portal XUNO, so that we have accurate current contact details. Kindly note that parents and guardians have the responsibility to let the school know via XUNO, note, phone or verbally of your child/ren’s absence on the day.

SAME-DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES

FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS/CARERSIf your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods:1. Online: log the absence directly using your school’s IT platform.2. Telephone: the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.3. Email: the school and provide the staff with your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent?Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If

your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

What is your responsibility? You are legally required to ensure your child attends school every day or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences or let them know in the morning if your child won’t be at school. In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide the school with your most up-to-date contact details.Generally one notification will be sent per family. Should there be circumstances that require both parents and carers to be notified, please contact the school to make the necessary arrangements.

What is the school’s responsibility? The school must notify you of an unexplained absence in relation to your child as soon as practicable on the same day.

Schools will let you know either by your school’s online communications app, SMS, phone call or email. If you can’t be reached because the school does not have your correct contact details (i.e. changed phone number, SMS/email failure notification received etc.), the school will attempt to make contact with any emergency contact/s nominated on your child’s file held by the school. Where possible, this contact will be made on the same day of the unexplained absence.

Where can I learn more about the process for managing student absences?Ask your school for a copy of the Attendance Policy which outlines the school’s processes and procedures for monitoring, recording and following-up of student absences.

Have a great week ahead. Sue & Staff

Help!!WeneedtosavetheEasternBarredBandicoots

Help the Eastern Barred Bandicoots by giving any spare 5-cent coins to room 28/5RB. We need your help to stop extinction. These little fleas are dying because of habitat loss. A number of bandicoots currently at Melbourne Zoo will be fitted with different transmitter types and will be monitored daily in their enclosures via night-vision cameras to assess their response. They will also be examined for changes in weight and any signs of discomfort or injury during this period. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot and I are counting on you to save their species. The Eastern Barred Bandicoots are the rat-size to rabbit-size and there are only 1,500 Eastern Barred Bandicoots left in Victoria’s wild. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is one of Australia's most endangered species, now considered extinct in Victoria's wild. The destruction of over 99% of its native grassland habitat, plus predation from introduced foxes, cats and dogs and competition with rabbits, has caused devastating results. Zoos Victoria are taking a big step in stopping the Eastern Barred Bandicoots from becoming extinct by releasing 16 Eastern Barred Bandicoots on Churchill Island.

Let’s stop extinction for the Eastern Barred Bandicoots

Grade 6 Sport

On Tuesday 17th of April, the Grade 6 mixed football team participated in the 2018 AFL Lightening Premiership Competition at Altona Green. The kids were very excited to finally be able to compete and put in an amazing effort throughout the entire day. All of the students were incredibly enthusiastic and ready to give the competition their very best. The team played 4 rounds of competitive football against St Martins, Altona Green, Queen of Peace and Altona Meadows Primary, showing determination and displaying some great skills in extremely windy conditions. The team was undefeated, progressing through to the Divisional Level which took place on Thursday the 19th July.

Once again, both girls and boys worked incredibly well as a team against very tough opposition (Williamstown Primary, Sacred Heart and Lumen Christie) and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship. Although they are not moving on to the next stage, they had lots of fun and are to be commended on their efforts and competitive spirit and should be very proud. Well Done to the Grade 6 Football team!

Football T-Ball

On Friday the 4th of July, we had a fantastic day at the second round of T-Ball. The competition was played on the stand in Williamstown. The conditions were extremely windy but not even that stopped us from having a great time. We played two games throughout the day, with two innings for each. We started off each game with our chant “1…2…3… SPG”! This chant encouraged our whole team to try their best and boost the team moral. The first game was lots of fun but unfortunately, we lost 14 runs to 7. The team wasn’t upset as we tried our best and still had a great time. The next game we were determined to win and it was really close, the scores were 9 -7. Unfortunately, we lost by two runs. All in all, it was a great day and we have loved learning how to play T-Ball.

Grade 6 Sport

SoccerHello, Seabrook. The boys and girls soccer teams did an outstanding job participating in the district competition this year. Three teams participated in the tournament this year, Seabrook Boys A, Seabrook Boys B and the Seabrook Girls. Each team played a total of three games against teams form Laverton, Queen of Peace, Altona Meadows and Altona Green. The Seabrook Boys A team won 2 out of 3 games, scoring a total of 9 goals and conceding only 2 goals. Well done! The Seabrook Boys B side came away with 2 wins and 1 loss and scored a total of 5 goals. Seabrook Girls walked away with 1 win, which was a fabulous effort considering most of the team learned the game as they played.

Well done to everyone who participated on that day. We demonstrated confidence, enthusiasm and integrity throughout the day.

Our School

Once again, Seabrook Primary School is providing free membership to Mathletics for all of our students for use both in the classroom and at home. This powerful internet based, award winning mathematics program is an exceptional tool in promoting increased confidence, understanding and enjoyment of mathematics in our students.Mathletics in an important resource in our classroom numeracy programs. Teachers receive a great deal of useful data from Mathletics regarding individual student’s participation and progress through the different topics completed both at school and home. Teachers can individualise Mathletics to suite each student’s ability, interests and learning requirements.

Parents can ensure that your children gets the most out of Mathletics by:• Taking an active role in your child’s mathematics progress,• Encourage your child to use Mathletics at least 3-5 times each week,• Encourage a balance between the Full Curriculum section and Mathletics Live,• Take time to work together with your child. The Support Centre in each activity will help show how to solve a particular problem,• Encourage your child to complete activities that challenge, rather than those he/she finds easy,• If the level your child is working at is too easy, speak to the class teacher about setting a different default level for your child,• Celebrate your child’s success, print the certificates out and display them at home.Mathletics is developing new activities and areas all the time. For more information on Mathletics check the web site or speak to your child’s teacher.

We would like to say a very big thank you to our school community for supporting Seabrook Primary’s Breakfast club. The breakfast club started last week on Wednesday and Thursday morning. We had a number of students attend, making their own breakfast and then playing Uno with the grade 6 leadership students. It was a nice warm atmosphere to begin our new initiative.

We would like to publicly acknowledge our supporters.

Bakers Delight Sanctuary Lakes for donating bread.

Tasty Chips for donating fruit.

Finsure and the Merrit family for donations towards milk.

Sorich, Nain and Pandya families for their donations towards cereal and spreads.

Moodley family for their donations of toasters.

Without these supporters our program would not be possible. Thank you.

If you are still interested in supporting our program we are asking for Coles gift cards and any donations of spoons would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Grade 6 leadership team

BOOK WEEK 2018

DRESS UP DAY

Dress up as your favourite

book character

Parents and Visitors Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Seabrook Primary School will be celebrating Book Week between 20th and 24th of August 2018. Book Week celebrates Australian authors and illustrators of Children’s books. It’s a wonderful time to immerse children in literature and celebrate books and reading.

The theme this year is ‘Find Your Treasure’

To celebrate this occasion we will be having a Book Character Parade on Thursday morning of the 23rd of August. The parade will be a whole school event with both junior and senior school showcasing their costumes. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character, however, be creative and try to use items of clothing and/or props from home. In addition, classes will be creating props early in the week, which will be suitable to use for the parade, for those students unable to source a costume from home.

Each grade will have an opportunity to parade their costume with the school community and students will enjoy participating in literacy activities during Book Week.

We hope you can join us for our special day!
