August 26, 2018Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary TimeJos 24:1–2a, 15–17, 18b; Eph 5:21–32 or

5:2a, 25–32; Jn 6:60–69

We all want to leave a legacy, to be remembered when weʼregone. A legacy comes from faithfully and lovingly living your con-victions. Joshua challenges the Israelites, making a definitive state-ment as their leader and head of his family: “We will serve theLord.” Notice that it isnʼt a question of if you will serve someone, butwho you will serve.

The easiest way to find out who you are serving is to look whereyour heart, thoughts, and worries are. Jesus said, “Where yourtreasure is, there also will your heart be” (Matthew 6:21).

Peter also had this hard choice placed to him, and he spoke upas the first pope, the head of a family of believers. When Jesus re-vealed the doctrine of the Eucharist, that it was truly his body andblood, many left him over this difficult saying.

Jesus asks the apostles if they want to leave, too. He could havesaid this was just a symbol—that those who left had misunderstood. But he doesnʼt change his teaching. He merely asks the apostlesif they accept and believe him.

Peterʼs answer, like Joshuaʼs, is a fundamental option. He findsin Jesusʼ words eternal life. There is nowhere else to go when youhave tasted the goodness and truth of Jesus. As hard as some ofthose truths may be, for Peter there is no turning away. FollowingJesus faithfully will lead him to lay down his life for Jesus, crucifiedupside down, and buried on Vatican Hill where you can visit histomb today. Howʼs that for a legacy?

Psalm 34

Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32

John 6:60-69

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day:

It is time to take a stand. Just like the faithful in to-

day’s first reading and the disciples in the Gospel, we

must decide if we really believe things that are beyond

our human understanding: that we are made in the di-

vine image, that Jesus is both divine and human, that

the Holy Spirit dwells inside of us, and so on. When

we pray the Creed today, take note of all that we be-

lieve, pronounce firmly each “I believe,” and note the

assent of those around you who share our beliefs.

Salmo 33

Efesios 5, 21-32

Juan 6, 55. 60-69

nuestras crencias.
