Gospel: jOHN 8: 1-11 Once again the scribes and Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They bring him a woman caught in the act of adultery. The Law of Moses requires that the adulteress should die. If Jesus does not agree, he will look like someone who does not respect the Law of Moses. To the Pharisees' amazement, Jesus at first ignores them. Then he stops them in their tracks with an unexpected challenge: "Let the one among you

who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." One by one the judges and critics drop their stones and drift away. Now that they recog-nize their own need for forgiveness, they are not ready to condemn someone else. Neither does Jesus condemn the woman. He simply re-quires her to turn away from sin. Now she has a chance for a new begin-ning.

1.) Matthew's gospel reflection does not say exactly what Jesus was writing in the sand. One tradition has it that he was writing down the sins of the people who were so willing to condemn the woman. Could Jesus have been writing something from Scripture? Could he have been writing a message to the crowd? What do you think he could have said?

Administrator’s Corner for Parish Bulletin: March 17, 2013 5th Sunday of Lent - C

Does Obedience to God yield new life? Jesus tried to warn his disciples about his death and pre-

pare them for it. A grain of wheat dies in order to produce new life, and Jesus had to die to pay for our sins and bring us new life. With his resurrection, he proved he has eternal life and can offer it to us.

Then he said that we must “hate” our lives and be willing to lose them so we can live. He meant that we have to be ready to lay aside our attachment to goods, worldly security, and pleasure to serve God freely. Serving God brings eternal life.

Jesus knew that his crucifixion lay ahead and being human, he dreaded it. He also knew that God sent him into the world to die for our sins in our place. So, Jesus said “no” to his human desires in order to obey his Father. Although we will never have to face such a difficult task, we are still called to obedience. Whatever the Father asks we should be willing to do and bring glory to his name.

God bless you. Fr. Alex

Padre Alex

Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to

you. Allow Your healing hand to heal them. Touch their soul with Your com-passion for others. Touch

their Heart with Your courage and infinite love for all. Touch their mind

with Your wisdom, that their mouth may always proclaim Your praise. Teach them to reach out to You in their need, and help them to lead others to You by example. Most loving Heart of Jesús, bring them health in body and spirit that they may serve You with all their strength. Touch gently these lives which You have created, now and forever. Amen.

FASTING: All those who are 18 and older, until their 59th birthday but before 60th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together, they should not equal a full meal. Eat-ing between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously af-fected. People in doubt about fasting or abstinence should consult a parish priest.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are di-rected to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, for-sythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion?

SAVE THE DATE Communion 2013 We would like to invite everyone to our First Communion on Saturday, May 4th
