THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel

asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want

someone to get his or her comeuppance. God's justice is something other than this, of course. God's justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremi-ah looks ahead to a time when a just one will

sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah's time. Israel's kings held the promise of God's fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God's promise could be realized through them.

Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and an-nounces that the Promised One will come.

Luke's Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And

so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that

while Christmas arrives on Santa s sleigh at the Macy s pa-rade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the

fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epipha-ny was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising eve-ryone to attend church frequently beginning on December

17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mo-saics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all

creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season.

Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas (270-343) is popularly known as Santa Claus, but he was an actual Bishop from Turkey! Although his family was wealthy, he was kind and generous. He helped the poor and needy in a quiet way. Once, he secretly threw bags of gold into a poor man’s house, helping the man’s daughter get married. This is why children still wait for St. Nicholas’ secret gifts today. Remember that Santa Claus loved Jesus very much and was a faithful servant of God. St Nicholas's feast day is on December 6.

Prayer Dear Lord Jesus. You gave St Nicholas a heart of Charity and

generosity. Give me too a desire to share what I have with others. Amen

Pilgrimage to the Holy Lands November 7 – 15, 2018

What can I say about a trip that most of us who made the pilgrimage desire to see for a very, very, long time. We were introduced to a beautiful yet very rocky land. Beauty in the vegetation – so rich and

green - but as soon as the irrigation stop it immediately became rocky and dirt. But this is the land our Lord entered as a man.

We followed his life – we walked where he walked. We traveled to Nazareth. Visited the Church Annunciation and the Church of the Nativity. Later, we visited Cana where the Lord did his first miracle

at this mother’s request. The next day, we visited the Sea of Galilee stopping at the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and the Fishes and at the Mount of Beatitudes where we celebrated Mass with Msgr. Barona. Later, we visited Capernaum where the church is built over the ruins of St. Peter’s

house. We took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee and enjoy a dinner with fish from the Sea of Galilee at a kibbutz. We finished with a visit to the Jordan River where John the Baptist and Jesus met.

We went to Tiberias, Mount Tabor and Bethlehem – We saw so many holy places along with historical site such as the Crusaders underground city in Acre.

And finally, to the city of Jerusalem! Here, we relived the final days of Jesus on earth. We visited the Church of the Pater Noster, the upper room of the Last Supper, Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane,

the ruins of Caiaphas’ Palace and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. And lastly, we walk the Via Dolorosa – the way of the cross.

We went to many other places such as the Dead Sea, Masada, Church of the Dormition – we visited so many religious, archaeological and historical sites.

The St. Michael pilgrims were Msgr. Jaime Barona, Marianne Leidy (our cantor), Charlene Bird, Joan D’Andrea, Mike & Glory Dyer, CK Keith, Jane Melton, George & Sandra Maule, Russ Williams, and Beth

Andert. Judy Canonico and Phyllis Fiorillo joined us. Next year, we plan a pilgrimage to the country of Poland with Fr. Tim Hepburn. You are invited!
