One of the exercises that our students at Quigley experienced on retreat was walking through the path of light. Towards the end of the evening, the students were gathered for prayer. They were asked to think about someone who was special to them, someone they admired and to light a candle for them as they prayed. After each candle was lit, it

was placed in a small paper bag with some sand in it and placed on the ground to form a path that led back to the Retreat house. After everyone had prayed, they were asked to return in silence thinking about the person they prayed for by walking through this path of light created by the lit paper bags. It was quite an impressive sight. I share this story as the readings from Scripture call us to be light to one another. We are challenged to live the light of Christ in the world. The image of light is a powerful one. It is essential and necessary for life. It gives promise and vision to our future. Light calls us to be people of action as we heard in the first reading, “share our bread, shelter the oppressed, clothe the naked, fight against false accusation. Where do we stand in being light to others? How have we passed on the light of faith in our lives? Light is meant to penetrate and overcome darkness. It is not meant for us to hide it. If we are to deepen our relationship with God, then we must make every effort we have to go forth and share our faith by bringing the Gospel message to others by being a light for them.

I hope that you had and opportunity to stop by school this week and see the wonderful and exciting things our students are learning and experiencing through the dedicated and committed faculty we have. It was a great celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Thanks for your support.

I am encouraging everyone to purchase a grand raffle ticket to our upcoming Spring Fundraiser. Through your effort and support, we can continue to carry on the wonderful tradition that Queen of Martyrs has to offer.

A reminder that Lent is fast approaching. Parents who would like their babies baptized before Lent, have until February 26th to do so. After that date, baptisms will resume on Easter Sunday, April 16th.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

“Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.” These words from Isaiah in today’s first reading lead nicely to Jesus’ words in today’s gospel: “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world.” May we all continue to savor and shine as we go about our daily lives through random acts of kindness.

“You are the light of the world.” (Mt 5:14)

The light we receive to take out into the darkness of the world comes only from God. “I am the Light of the world; he that follows Me, walks not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (Jn 8:12) We must spend time with Our Master, the one who loves us, to learn His ways. Come to Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. Become a Committed Adorer. Sign up at the Adoration Chapel or call Marion at 708(424-8433) for more information.

QMYM Mission Trip 2016 Reflection

PARISH LIBRARY NEWS "The Joy of Love," by Pope Francis. This is the pope's often discussed work, "Amoris Laetitia." Here's the pope's personal advice to the laity about commitment, love, relationships and marriage. It's

easy to understand and some say "just beautiful." It's an enjoy-able read from cover to cover or you can sample its 250 pages in bits and pieces. . . . "House of Gold," is an adult novel by prolific author Bud Macfarlane Jr., a Notre Dame grad. He weaves good and bad, saints and sinners, faithful and faithless into a spooky world of post-modern tumult and chaos. Spoiler alert: it's the faithful Catholics who cope best. Guys who like survival yarns – this is for you. Find our "library nook" in Martyrs' Cry Room. Take a look and take a book, before or after Masses on weekends. For more info, call Terri, at (773) 239-1041

PASTA DINNER Saturday February 18, 2017

Religious Education News Saturday School of Religion children will participate in a BAKE SALE on Saturday, Feb. 11 during class time. Proceeds from the Bake Sale will be given to Youth Ministry for their July Mission Trip to Harlan, Kentucky.

Grade 8 Confirmation Candidates are continuing to prepare for the sacrament by completing service experiences, doing homily reports, choosing a name and a sponsor and learning more each day about the Catholic Church.

Thank you to Dr. Cheryl Antos, Director of Religious Education at St. Linus Parish and Mary Kay Burberry, Director of Religious Education at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Orland Park, who spoke to children in grades 5-8 about their vocations. We thank them for contributing to our Catholic School Week celebration.

Enjoy this first week of February!

“Jesus, be with me today in everything I do and say.”

“At the beginning of the week I knew most of the people in my work group. As the week went on I got to know everyone even better. I learned skills that will be valuable in life and formed relationships that I will continue after the Mis-sion Trip. My relationship with God was impact-

ed greatly over the week. I saw our whole work group come together and help two children to pay for summer camp that they could not afford…This showed me that God was with us and the families who lived in the house although they had many problems we discovered from old notes. Goals that I set for myself were to make friends with people from OLW and to not complain. I accomplished these goals by being nice and talking to kids from OLW on the work site and at Sleepy Hollow. Throughout the week I tried to accept whatever job I was given and not complain even if it was something that I didn’t enjoy doing. This helped me to live in the moment.” – Jack

Queen of Martyrs Junior High Students Teach Science Lesson to Pre-Kindergarten

Mrs. Biszewski’s 8th Grade Science Class presented a lesson about Living and Non-Living items. Students brought in various living items such as plants, fish, and a turtle. They also brought in non living items including sun glasses, a Rubix Cube, and a remote control helicopter. The students showed their items to Ms. Smerz’s and Mrs. Bischoff’s class and gave them clues to help them decide if they were a living item or a non living item. The Pre-K students learned that living items need oxygen in order to survive. They also learned that non living items, like the remote control helicopter

that can fly, is not living even though it can move. The 8th Grade students made booklets about living and non living things for the Pre-Kindergarten students to take home and share with their families. The students enjoyed working with each other for this very hand’s on lesson!
