SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptismal Class is held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the parish office. The next class is Monday, August 21st. To register for the class, please call 973-627-0313 . Both parents are encouraged to attend the class before the birth of the baby. The Sacrament of Bap-tism is administered weekly at the 12:15 pm Mass and a Baptismal Ceremony at 1:30 pm. Families are required to be active, contributing parishioners of St. Cecilia’s Parish for 2 months prior to the child’s baptism date.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Arrangements are to be made at least ONE YEAR in ad-vance. The date should not be set until the priest has been consulted.

The Diocese of Paterson will be hosting the

2017 Pilgrimage this October to the National

Shrine, The Basilica of the Immaculate Concep-

tion in Washington D.C.. on October 20 & 21,

2017. The trip includes transportation, two meals

tions at the Westin Hotel in Virginia, and spiri-

tual visits to America’s Frist Cathedral, and St.

Jude Shrine in Baltimore, and the National Shrine

SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the

ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-

barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a

statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the

words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave

of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he

who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John

11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is

the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church

states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-

parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left

side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One

may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place

and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price

for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING – Parents are asked to en-

courage their son/daughter to consider serving Our Lord at

the altar. Training for this ministry will be conducted by Dea-

con Matt on Saturday mornings following Labor Day. Addi-

VIVERE CHRISTUS EST AWARD – Each year Bishop

Serratelli presents the diocesan “Vivere Christus Est Award”

to individuals who have shown themselves to be exemplary in

their service to the Church. This year’s award will be pre-

sented to Martin and Lee Ann Mackin in recognition of their

generosity and service to our parish. The award will be given

on Sunday, September 10th during the celebration of Vespers

at 3:30 in the afternoon at Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in

Paterson. Our congratulations and gratitude to Marty and Lee

Ann.

HOLY HOUR TO RESUME – Holy Hour will resume on

Monday, September 11th in Saint Cecilia Church from 7 to 8

p.m. During this time a priest will also be available for the

sacrament of penance. Please consider spending some quite

time with our Lord Jesus present in the Most Blessed Sacra-

ment. Holy Hour will conclude with the praying of the Divine

Mercy Chaplet.

LABOR DAY MASS – Holy Mass on Labor Day, Mon-

day, September 4th, will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in the Saint

Cecilia Cemetery, weather permitting. Don’t forget to bring

a lawn chair. In the event of inclement weather the Mass

will be celebrated in the church.

This Saint was a native of Silesia, which then belonged to Poland. He studied at Cracow, Prague, and Bologna, receiving the degrees of doctor of laws and divinity. On his return home, the Bishop of Cracow gave him a stipend in the cathedral and employed his assistance in the administration of the diocese.

After the resignation of the pious Bishop Vincent, Yvo, the uncle of St. Hyacinth, was appointed to fill the See. Going to Rome, he took with him his two nephews, Hyacinth and Ceslas. St. Dominic was then (1218) in Rome, and Hyacinth, being greatly impressed, joined his institute, together with Ceslas and two German gentlemen, receiving the habit from St. Dominic himself in the convent of Santa Sabina. They made their vows by special dispensation after a novitiate of only six months and returned to Poland, St. Hyacinth being appointed superior of their mission. On their way they preached the Gospel in many places, received new members into their Order, and finally, after a lengthy period, arrived in Poland, where they were received with the greatest joy.

The preaching of St. Hyacinth effected an entire change of morals in the city of Cracow. He carried the Gospel to the idola-trous countries of the North: in Prussia, Pomerania, along the Baltic, in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. He labored in Rus-sia, traveling as far as the Black Sea and the Aegean, and returned to Cracow in 1231; but after two years he set out again to visit the convents he had founded, and penetrated among the Tartars, going even to China and Tibet.

He again arrived at Cracow in 1257, the seventy-second and last year of his life. He died on August 15 of the same year. Eccle-siastical historians call him the Apostle of the North and the Thaumaturgus of his age, on account of his numerous miracles. He was, canonized in 1594 by Pope Clement VIII.

PRAYER God, You willed to send St. Hyacinth to enlighten many peoples. Through his intercession, grant that we may walk in the light of Your truth. Amen.

My Dear Parishioners,

As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day, on this the first day of the week, we mark the 19 th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The

Scripture texts given for our reflection today speak of the power of God. The Almighty had revealed something of Himself

in times past as we find it recorded in the lection from the First Book of Kings and as the Apostle Paul writes in his corre-

spondence to the Romans. But in the fullness of time the Almighty has revealed Himself in the Person of His Only Begotten

Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Gospel reading we see the Lord Jesus who has command over the seas and the

wind. He is the God of creation who has power over these forces of nature.

Jesus demonstrates the power of God in the mercy and salvation that He extends to the Apostle Peter who found himself in

chaos as a result of taking his eyes off the Savior. Peter, like many of us, became frightened when he experienced forces

much greater than he, forced which threatened his life. “Lord, save me!” How many times have we said the same? The Lord

says to us what he said to Peter, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Yes, we too are weak and our faith at times

fragile but we must take courage in the Lord who made heaven and earth.

God is present with us at all times, especially in the difficult moments in life. The Lord reveals His presence in the smile or

encouraging words we receive, the help others offer us and other signs that tell us we are never alone. God works through

the words and actions of others. He counts on us to also be His presence to others. Conducting ourselves in such a way is

able to calm the forces which try to frighten us and lead us to despair.

This week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, a holy day of obligation

on which attendance at the Holy Mass is our duty. Ancient Church tradition tells us that when the number of days was com-

plete for the Mother of God that she was assumed into heaven, body and soul. In some places flowers are blessed on this

day to commemorate the tradition which says that when the tomb of the Mother of God was opened flowers were found

rather than her body. This resurrection feast is a foretaste of our own being united one day, glorified body and immortal

soul, in the heavenly Jerusalem.
