Greetings in our Lord Jesus Christ!
I, as your new pastor, would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself briefly to all of you. My full name is Santos Leonel Ortega. I was born on November 1st which is All Saints’ Day and, of course, I was named after this glorious feast.
I was born and raised in Guatemala Central America. I come from a Catholic family of six children- four boys and two girls. I’m the number four and the only one who has consecrated his life as a priest. I was about 11 years old when I began to contemplate the idea of becoming a priest and at the age of 14, I was accepted to the minor seminary in Guatemala. Unfortunately, due to some family tragedies, three years later, I left the minor seminary and began to work in order to support my family financially.
I came to California in 1986 and a few months after my arrival, I officially
became a seminarian for this wonderful Diocese of San Bernardino. It was precisely at this time that our Diocese was opening a house of formation for its future candidates to the priesthood. I moved into Fray Junipero Serra House of Formation which was located next to St. Francis of Sales Parish in Riverside and began to attend the local colleges: RCC, UCR, CAL State San Bernardino. After obtaining a BA in psychology and finishing my philosophy requirement for the priesthood, I began my last four years of theology and priestly training at St. John Mayor Seminary in Camarillo, California. By the grace of God, I was ordained to the priesthood 18 years ago on May 31st in 1996 by our Bishop Gerald Barnes.
Since, then, I have served in several different parish communities. My first parish assignment was to the community of St. George in Ontario for a period of 3 years. My second parish assignment was to the community of St. Martha in Murrieta. After two years, I left to become the pastor of St. Joan of Arc in Victorville in the high desert. After serving that parish community for five years, I left to become the pastor of Holy Family in Hesperia for six years. I am presently serving the wonderful parish community of St. Catherine of Alexandria in Temecula where I have been for the last two years.
Now, Bishop Barnes has entrusted me as your spiritual leader. I have accepted this new ministry with great joy in my heart knowing that with God’s divine grace I will be able to do his Will. Keep in my mind, that all of us by the virtue of our baptism are called by Jesus to be his faithful disciples and good stewards of his Kingdom here on earth. At this specific moment, God has chosen us as community, to embrace and take ownership of our financial debt to our Diocese. I realize this is a great financial challenge for each one of us. But together, we can continue not only to offer our prayers but to make our sacrificial giving in order to fulfill our responsibilities. Finally, I firmly believe that with God’s Divine Providence anything is possible. We need only to put our trust in Him. For this reason, here I am happily looking forward to serving you as new Pastor.

Yo, como su nuevo pastor, me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para presentarme brevemente a todos ustedes . Mi nombre completo es Santos Leonel Ortega. Nací el 1ro de noviembre que es el Día de Todos los Santos y, por supuesto, me pusieron el nombre de esta fiesta gloriosa.
Nací y crecí en Guatemala Centro América. Vengo de una familia católica de seis hijos - cuatro varones y dos mujeres. Soy el número cuatro y el único que ha consagrado su vida como sacerdote. Yo tenía unos 11 años de edad cuando empecé a contemplar la idea de ser sacerdote y a la edad de 14 años, fui aceptado en el seminario menor de Guatemala . Desafortunadamente, debido a algunas tragedias familiares, tres años más tarde, dejé el seminario menor y comencé a trabajar para poder ayudar a mi familia económicamente.
Vine a California en 1986 y pocos meses después de mi llegada, me convertí oficialmente en seminarista por esta maravillosa Diócesis de San Bernardino. Fue precisamente en este momento que nuestra Diócesis estaba abriendo una casa de formación para sus futuros candidatos al sacerdocio. Me mudé a la Casa de Formación Fray Junípero Serra, que se encuentra al lado de la Parroquia en Riverside de San Francisco de Sales y comencé a asistir a las universidades locales: RCC, UCR, Cal State San Bernardino. Después de obtener una licenciatura en psicología y haber terminado filosofía, que es un requisito para el sacerdocio, comencé mis últimos cuatro años de teología y de formación sacerdotal en el Seminario Mayor de St. John en Camarillo, California. Por la gracia de Dios, me fue conferido el sacerdocio hace 18 años el 31 de mayo de 1996 por nuestro Obispo Gerald Barnes.
Desde entonces, he servido en varias diferentes comunidades parroquiales. Mi primera misión parroquial fue en la comunidad de San Jorge en Ontario por un período de 3 años. Mi segunda asignación parroquial fue en la comunidad de Santa Marta en Murrieta. Después de dos años, me fui para convertirme en el pastor de Santa Juana de Arco en Victorville en el desierto. Después de servir a esa comunidad parroquial durante cinco años, me fui como pastor de la Sagrada Familia en Hesperia durante seis años. Actualmente estoy sirviendo a la maravillosa comunidad parroquial de Santa Catalina de Alejandría, en Temecula, donde he estado durante los últimos dos años.
Ahora, el obispo Barnes ha confiado en mí como líder espiritual de esta comunidad. He aceptado este nuevo ministerio con gran alegría en mi corazón al saber que con la gracia divina de Dios voy a ser capaz de hacer su Voluntad. Tengan en mente que todos nosotros por la virtud de nuestro bautismo estamos llamados por Jesús para ser sus discípulos fieles y buenos administradores de su Reino aquí en la tierra. En este momento específico, Dios nos ha elegido como comunidad, para abrazar y tomar posesión de la deuda financiera de nuestra Diócesis. Comprendo que esto es un gran reto financiero para cada uno de nosotros. Pero juntos, podemos continuar no sólo para ofrecer nuestras oraciones, sino para que podamos hacer un sacrificio en nuestra ofrenda para cumplir con nuestras responsabilidades. Por último, creo firmemente que con la Divina Providencia de Dios todo es posible. Sólo tenemos que poner nuestra confianza en él. Por esta razón, aquí estoy felizmente con ganas de servirles como nuevo Pastor.

Respect Welcome, Father Santos The child grew and became strong in spirit. (Luke 1:80) What do you think is the most impressive thing about John the Baptist? How about that even as a unborn babe, John leaped for joy in the presence of Mary and Jesus. John's leap may remind us of Isaac's wife Rebecca, who also felt an unusual amount of activity from the twins in her womb. These dramatic displays show us that there is a part of us that can recognize God, regardless of who we are or how old we are. Pray for the unborn that they are given the opportunity to grow and live and share in the life of Christ with us.

Estas dramáticas visualizaciones nos demuestra que hay una parte de nosotros que puede reconocer a Dios, independientemente de quienes somos o que tan viejos estemos.
