Vodkat League Premier Division Programme of the Year Programme of the Year Programme of the Year Programme of the Year Season 2009-10

Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Barnoldswick Town. I hope our visitors had a good journey to St Helens and a safe return after the game. This will be the first and last time that Barnoldswick Town visit us here at Knowsley Road with the last football due to be played here on Tuesday 28th September against New Mills. It’s a quick return to home action after coming through 120 Minutes and a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over Northern Counties East, Premier Division outfit Nostell Miners Welfare here on Tuesday evening. I think it is fair to say that the visitors had the vast majority of possession during the first period of normal time and will have been wondering how they did not manage to score during the half wasting a handful of chances in the process. The second period started in a similar fashion until a Town counter attack saw Mike Deakin felled in the box and Liam Pearson converted the spot kick the first action the Nostell keeper had was picking the ball out of the net! The visitors got themselves deservedly level before Pearson added a second with around 10 minutes of the match remaining. With St Helens looking to have booked their place in the next round a contentious free kick on the edge of the box in the final minute of normal time was converted by the visitors to take the time into an extra half hour. The supplementary periods could not see the sides come up with another goal and the game went into the dreaded penalty shoot out. The first four penalties were converted with Iain Dyson and Marc Stephens netting for Town before Nostell’s Lee Maturine saw he well taken spot kick saved by Town stopper Dale Newbrook, the advantage was pressed home when skipper Ben Kay found the net with the next kick. The final four kicks of the shoot out were also converted, Lee Owens & Mike Fargher doing the honours for Town and the hosts secured a home tie with Glossop North End in the next round with a 5-4 success from 12 yards. The tie against Glossop will be a 12.30pm kick off her at Knowsley Road on Saturday 28th August 2010. So onto this afternoon’s contest, Lee, Phil and the lads will know we need to step up our performance massively from the first period on Tuesday evening some of the new lads will hopefully be a bit more at home in their new surroundings and will settle into the game more quickly today. Whilst winning cup ties is always nice it is back to the bread and butter that is the league today and both ourselves and Barnoldswick Town will be looking to gain the three points on offer as even in these early stages no one wants to see their side in the bottom reaches of the table! Lets get behind the lads and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Enjoy the Game . . . Jeff Voller

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road to our first time visitors Barnoldswick Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with our home support are treated to an entertaining encounter. I’m not sure I have fully recovered from Tuesday’s marathon effort by the lads in eventually recording a 5-4 penalties victory over FA Cup opponents Nostell Miners Welfare. There wasn’t a great deal between the sides over the two games and while I am not sure how, we were never behind in the tie. Jeff Voller has made comment on the game and his detailed match report in available in today’s programme. I said on the night we’d witnessed ten very good penalties and one fine save. Making his home debut (along with a number of Town players) Dale Newbrook became an instant Town hero with a fine stop that gave Town the advantage. Town will now play Glossop North End, who beat Wigan Robin Park 0-1 in a replay on the same evening, next Saturday 28 August 2010, with a revised kick off time of 12.30pm due to restrictions on availability here at Knowsley Road. As many of you will know our time here at Saints in drawing to a close and we’ve now had confirmation that our final home game will be on Tuesday 28th September when New Mills will be our visitors for a 7.45pm kick off. We will be hoping for a decent crowd for our farewell game and we must thank Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who are offering a great prize for one of our half time activities - more details in next Tuesday’s programme v Congleton Town. I’d like to welcome on board Master Valet Ltd who have become this season’s Executive Programme Sponsors (replacing Johnsons Toyota Liverpool) and we thank them for their support. Don’t forget that we are always on the look out for new sponsors - please contact me on 07976 059 404 for further details. Our first 100+ Club Draw will take place next Saturday (28th August) - if you haven’t got your number yet please Andy Langley, or any other committee member at today’s game. A range of club merchandise will be on sale at home games including replica shirts, mugs, key rings - see club shop page elsewhere in the programme for further details. Next up will be Congleton Town who visit Knowsley Road next Tuesday evening. Join us in the Black Bull for the usual after match discussions and Man of the Match presentations. In Town Today . . . Historically there are been teams representing the Town of Barnoldswick in County competition since the early 1900’s with teams such as Barnoldswick, Barnoldswick United & Barnoldswick Town playing in the Lancashire Combination in the early part of the 20th Century. Indeed St Helens Town & Barnoldswick crossed swords during the latter’s 8 season stint in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination League between 1947/8 & 1954/55 seasons. The clubs best league finish was achieved in the 1952/3 season when

they finished in 6th position above Town who ironically beat them twice 5-3 at home and 6-0 away. The origins of the current club date back to 1972 when a new club was formed and named Barnoldswick United (1972), - so called due to being canny Yorkshire men – being as their was a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would not now be liable for them. The current ground started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990's and joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United(1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and the club changed its name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. From that point the club ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990's the 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, with the 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It had always been in the club's constitution to get the ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw the club accepted into The North West Counties Football League, with the 1st team playing in Division One, and the 2nd team in the reserve division. The clubs 3rd team remained in The East Lancashire Football League. The club also entered an under 18's team in The LFA midweek floodlight league for the 2009/2010 season, and also had 7 junior teams playing in the North Valley League for the 2009/2010 season. The club can call upon the 2 pitches on the site, one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and is hired out for functions. The club’s main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds Stadium. Ambitions for last season started low. The club have got three managers and they took a lot of stick especially from Radio Lancashire, stating that 3 managers cannot possibly run a successful football team.

. . . Barnoldswick Town Well Messrs Ball, Richardson & Airdrie proved them all wrong with Barnoldswick Town finishing runners up in the Vodkat League, Division One and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as the club only expected to hold our own and try to make sure they avoided the battle at the bottom of the league. Taking the step up will once again see the club looking forward to avoid relegation in the first instance and take it from there. They have had a difficult start to Premier Division life hosting Congleton Town on the opening Saturday of the season before a midweek visit to Ramsbottom United losing both games by the odd goal. Match Report Tuesday 17th August 2010 FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round Replay St Helens Town 2-2 Nostell Miners Welfare AET St Helens Town Win 5-4 on Penalties. 1-0; Liam Pearson 56 Minutes (Penalty), 1-1; Chris Robson 68 Minutes, 2-1; Liam Pearson 79 Minutes 2-2; Liam Coughlan 90 Minutes. After three and a half hours worth of football could not split these two sides it took the best of ten spot kicks to decide which team would host Glossop North End in the next round. St Helens Town were lucky to still be in the tie at half time after an awful display during the opening 45 minutes of the contest, indeed how Nostell managed to go in at half time with a “nil” next to their name was beyond most of the people in attendance. In the opening twenty minutes of the tie the hosts had virtually no controlled possession and early chances fell to Ernest Boafo, Neil Beardsmore and Darren Rushton but none of these efforts troubled Dale Newbrook in the home goal. A Town counter attack saw Liam Pearson latch onto a clearance and get into the box only to be pulled back in the act of shooting but the referee deemed this not worthy of a spot kick. Normal service was them resumed with an Beardsmore being pushed around the post by Newbrook. Even when Town did venture forward there was a sting in the tale as they found out just after the half hour mark. Marc Stephens found Ben Kay with a free kick on the edge of the area and his effort was blocked which started the counter, Boafo advanced before crossing towards Rushton but he should not keep his effort down on the stretch. The final chance of the first period was created by Boafo as his run got him to the edge of the box where is effort was blocked and the rebound fell kindly to Wayne Ball but he shot wide of the left hand upright. The second period started in much the same vein with the visitors retaining the ball well, last ditch defending saw Mike Fargher clear a dangerous ball after good work from Ball on the left wing. A rare foray forward for Town saw Mike Deakin cut into the box from the left and a late Nostell challenge floored him with Mr Wilson having no doubt in pointing to the spot. The first action of any note visiting stopper Gavin Ansley had was to face the spot kick and then pick the ball out of his net after Liam Pearson had dispatched the set piece with aplomb. Twelve minutes later the scores were all square as Nostell’s Chris Robson smashed a half cleared corner home from the edge of the box with the aid of a deflection, a corner which was gifted to the hosts after a mistake by Newbrook in the Town goal. The hosts almost regained the lead on 77 minutes when an excellent cross from Fargher on the right was met by Luke Faulkner and to be matched with a good save from Ansley. St Helens did take the lead again on 79 minutes as Stephens released Pearson with a superb through ball which beat the offside trap and left the defenders trailing in the strikers wake as raced away to slot past the visiting stopper. With time running out similar to the original tie it looked as if Town were to advance but Nostell had other ideas. First Newbrook had to be alert to make a 1on1 save from Boafo on 85 minutes before a generous free kick in the last minute of normal time on the edge of the Town box was converted by Liam Coughlan to take the time to extra time. The opening moments of extra time almost saw the visitors take the lead for the first time in the tie as Boafo got into the box and drew a good save from Newbrook. A couple of minutes later Town had their goalkeeper to thank again after Dave Garnell had been caught on the ball by Boafo with the striker again being thwarted. With the first period of extra time drawing to a close Lee Owens’ free kick was headed on by Iain Dyson towards Fargher and his effort was deflected wide of the right hand post by a defender. The best chance of extra time and indeed the last chance of the match came with five minutes left to play. A quick move by the hosts saw Kay send a cross into the danger area from the right and Dyson just failed to make contact with it when a goal looked certain and Daley Woods could not get there fast enough to slot the ball into the empty net. So the game went to penalty kicks and the first four penalties were converted with Iain Dyson and Marc Stephens netting for Town before Nostell’s Lee Maturine saw he well taken spot kick saved by Town stopper Dale Newbrook, the advantage was pressed home when skipper Ben Kay found the net with the next kick. The final four kicks of the shoot out were also converted, Lee Owens & Mike Fargher doing the honours for Town and the hosts secured a home tie with Glossop North End in the next round with a 5-4 success from 12 yards. St Helens Town: Newbrook, Gore, Garnell, Owens, Faulkner, Deakin (Cliff 62), Stephens, Kay (c), Pearson (Dyson 83), Arnold (D.Woods 62), Fargher. Subs Not Used: Hatton, Frazer, Langley. Nostell Miners Welfare: Ansley, S.Jackson, Hope (M.Jackson 83), Rushton (c), Robson, Denton, Beardsmore (Wales 83), Coughlan, Boafo, Jagger, Ball (Maturine 74). Subs Not Used: Dawson, Minns, Moyembi.

St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

I am absolutely delighted with our partnership with St Helens Town AFC. When I was a teenager I had a very hard decision to make, Football or Rugby League, I choose Rugby League and fortunately I have never looked back. The partnership with “Town” will be very fruitful, everyone has a great chance to win a great Toyota Aygo, can i take this opportunity to thank Johnson’s Toyota, everyone associated with the club and a special thank you to club chairman John McKiernan. I look forward to visiting and taking in a few games. I have to thank the club for something close to my heart, my son Taylor last year played for the Under 8’s. The excellent coaching given to my son enabled him to have trials at the majority of premiership clubs in the North West. I am pleased to say he was selected to join the Liverpool Academy, I am so proud and hopefully he could develop into the next Steve Gerrard. Every home game i will be writing a article for match day programme, this will keep all town fans up to date with everything involved with the charity. The Foundation is growing and we have some very special events within St Helens in the next 6 months. By the time you read this programme it will have been announced about the highest accolade that can be given to any Rugby League player and my next challenge. I was absolutely elated to be asked to be Guest of Honour at this years Challenge Cup Final. It is a great honour and one that came as a complete surprise. It is good that the RFL have kept it 'in house' and are starting to recognise the work that many past players do for the game and charity. Now that the final 2 teams are confirmed, it will give me great pleasure in awarding any of these two great clubs with the trophy, as the players, staff and fans of both clubs have played a big part in the success of The Steve Prescott Foundation, which I am very grateful for. The 5 marathons in 5 days will without doubt, be the hardest of all the previous challenges we have undertaken as a Foundation. It will be made especially hard due to the lack of time to prepare and train. I think I'll have to do an Eddie Izzard and train while I'm doing it. This is such a tight schedule because our plans have been forced to change, from the original idea of dragon boating to the Grand Final. This had to be discarded due to health and safety issues around the boats travelling through the locks. I have started running again and I’m hoping my marathon attempt in April, will put me in good stead but I know I’ve got a long way to go. I’m on holiday at the moment in Lanzarote, but I’m trying to get some training in. This is proving hard as we are all abusive - sorry, I mean all inclusive and the sun is shining which seems to drain you rather than motivate you. For more information please go to our website at www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. This just leaves me to say, I hope the Town has a successful and profitable season ahead.

Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . .

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. All participants will receive a signed commemorative certificate and will be entered in to the draw for the car which will be made on Saturday 26 March 2011 or as soon as all 200 packages have been sold. Martin Blondel, Secretary of The Steve Prescott Foundation said, ‘We’re always on the look-out for new fundraising ideas and when St Helens Town approached us we were delighted with their offer. We are looking forward to working alongside the Football Club and hope to raise a lot of money for the two charities we support the Christie Cancer Hospital & the Try Assist Fund’ For further information, or to purchase a sponsorship package please contact Andy Langley on 07850740894. Vodkat League News Jonathan's Cup Glory

Glossop North End press officer Jonathan Haggart took the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong ambition prior to the Hillmen's FA Cup tie against Wigan Robin Park last Saturday. Jonathan's footballing 'talents' on the pitch have previously been a barrier to him making an impact on FA Cup history, but he can now at least claim - albeit dubiously - to have been involved in an FA Cup tie. On his blog - named Haggis In Ponderland - Jonathan explained: "My role (at Glossop) has many facets, but handily two of them are assisting in the

player registration forms and completing the team sheet before a game. "So pre-season, I filled in my signing-on form, and then before our tie with Wigan Robin Park on Saturday, once the proper team had been entered onto the sheet, I added my name to the list. "Teams are allowed seven subs in the FA Cup, but rarely pick more than five, extraordinarily six, so there I was - in substitute number seven heaven. "I didn't tell anyone, and I didn't put myself on the printed list for the clubhouse window. But I did keep the club's copy of the official team sheet, and this will be going in a frame and kept safely in my possession as proof on my involvement in what in truth was an ordinary game, but marks a special moment personally in my continuing love affair with the competition".

Mickey Graham Commits His Future To Rossy Rossendale United have announced that Mickey Graham has joined the club as Assistant Manager. Mickey replaces Iain MacLellan who has resigned as Assistant Manager due to personal commitments. Mickey was, until recently, employed as a coach by Bolton Wanderers, but is now able to fully commit to the Assistant Manager's position alongside manager John Hughes, a role to which he was originally appointed, but unable to fulfil, when Hughes became Manager.

John Hughes said: 'This is a massive boost to the club and to me personally. Mickey and I were in partnership, but in opposite roles, when Rossy had an exciting team in years gone by. "We now hope to recreate the good times by putting together a settled disciplined team, which will make progress in the Vodkat League".

St Helens Town News . . . Toyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for SuccessToyota Helping Town’s Drive for Success St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Johnsons Toyota Liverpool will become the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season and this will see the company’s Toyota brand emblazoned on the new Town kit throughout 2010-11.

Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘I am delighted that we’ve been able to develop our partnership with Johnsons and this builds upon the great support they offered St Helens Town throughout last season’. Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, the Bootle based car dealership, were initially the club’s Executive Programme Sponsors for season 2009-10 and extended their support courtesy of a number of match and match ball sponsorships along with the provision of a branded car

which formed part of the club’s Player of the Month awards. Johnsons were also extremely generous in their support of Town’s Bert Trautmann anniversary celebrations in November 2009. John McKiernan said, ‘We worked extremely hard to generate a huge amount of sponsorship last season and gave considerable coverage to a large number of new sponsors via our printed and on-line matchday programmes, club website and matchday activities. We are hopeful that last year’s efforts will provide a firm foundation for future seasons. “Johnsons Toyota Liverpool have given the club a record breaking financial boost during tough economic times and we feel that it is in part a recognition that St Helens Town can play a leading role in promoting their brand across the North West.’ He added, ‘Johnsons will be undertaking a number of promotional events and product placement activities across St Helens during the coming year and St Helens Town will be prominent throughout these. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the club prior to our arrival at the new stadium in August 2011!’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool said, ‘Our work with St Helens Town last season proved an ideal opportunity to expand our brand across Merseyside and we are looking forward to developing and extending our partnership so that both ourselves and the club will continue to see significant benefits’. He added, ‘We have some exciting plans for the coming season which will raise the club’s profile along with additional sponsorship monies.’

Around The Grounds

The Wooders - Garswood United The pre-season travels for St Helens Town took us on the short trip to Garswood United’s Wooders ground situated between St Helens and Wigan and as is relevant this season halfway between Knowsley Road and Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground. Garswood play in the Cheshire League First Division (formerly the Mid Cheshire League) but struggled last term and finished bottom of the pile. Upon entering the facility’s car park which got jam packed the closer it became to kick off the clubhouse is off to your right with the left hand side of the pitch directly in front of you. There is hard standing and post and rail around the length of the pitch with the only cover and seating being in a small stand in front of the clubhouse itself. All four sides of the pitch are available to view the game from but the far side as you enter the ground is quite overgrown and

not recommended unless you are a David Bellamy type and enjoy undergrowth and insects! The clubhouse is very modern and served a variety of refreshments at reasonable enough prices. The home side put up a good fight against t h e i r mus t i l l u s t r i o us ne ighbou rs ea rn ing a creditable 0-0 draw on what looked like a good surface for the level they play at.

All Our Yesterdays . . . Town’s early years The present St. Helens Town club has just embarked on its 64th league season. The first two 1947-49 were spent in the Liverpool County Combination, the period 1949-75 in membership of the Lancashire Combination, followed by 7 years in the Cheshire League and the last 28 in the North West Counties League, where they are the only club in permanent membership of the top division. During the early years, the newly reformed club had lofty ambitions, just as the original club had harboured in the early years of the last century. Success in the Liverpool County Combination culminated in the club’s first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was won in a thrilling final against Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. The following season, 1949/50, Town joined the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination, gaining promotion at the second attempt. Back in 1951, long before the establishment of the football pyramid, the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League were widely regarded as the Football League’s Fifth Division. Leading clubs from both competitions vied for membership of the Football League. New Brighton had just failed to be re-elected to the Third Division (North) and dropped into the Lancashire Combination, where they came up against Town on 20th October at the Tower Grounds, Garner and Sumner each scoring in a creditable 2-2 draw. Wigan Athletic were prominent members of the Combination (and, later on, the Cheshire League) and many St. Helens Town supporters were of the opinion that, whatever Wigan could do, Town could also do. There was a great deal of ambition around the Town club, built on the back of early successes, that a Football League place could be an achievable aim. After all, despite the competition from the Saints at Knowsley Road, several thousand men travelled from St. Helens every week to watch Everton and Liverpool. Success on the football field might well persuade a good number of those people to watch their football on their St. Helens doorsteps. Town’s first season in the First Division of the Lancashire Combination was an uphill struggle. Nevertheless, three wins from the last five games almost secured their status and they finished just two points adrift of Rossendale United in 20th place. 1952/53 began well enough and there were 6 wins and a draw from the first 7 games. However, there was unrest at Hoghton Road, where crowds were not as good as many thought they should be. It was generally thought that a move to a ground nearer the town centre would result in bigger support and with the bigger gates, the club would be able to attract better players and further its ambitions for Football League status. St. Helens Recs. Rugby League club had played professional rugby at City Road between the wars, but the Pilkingtons company had withdrawn their financial support in April 1939 and the ground had stood empty until 1949, when Pilkington Recs. were re-born as an amateur rugby league club. Pilkingtons were approached and the company’s board agreed to make City Road available to St. Helens Town. The Town Chairman, W. P. Smith, told the local press that the club had come to the cross-roads and a drastic solution to the club’s financial problems had to be

. . . Town’s Early Years found. It was a question of raising income or disband. Not enough people were willing to pay their shilling at the gate. It was announced that a meeting would be held in the refreshment hut following the Droylsden game on 22nd November to discuss the proposed move. The momentous decision was taken to re-locate to City Road and the first game, a Liverpool Non-League Cup game against Stoneycroft, resulted in an 8-1 victory. The following week, 6th December, Morecambe Reserves were dispatched 8-0. Ronnie Rigby scored 4 goals in each match. Crowds were encouraging at first, although they were a little disappointing if Saints were at home the same day. The season was quite successful, but Town ran out of steam towards the end, finishing in fourth place and just missing out on promotion. 1953/54 season began at City Road but, by the end of October, Town were back at Hoghton Road and the ground was taken off the market. A renewed appeal was made for more volunteers to assist the club and for supporters to be militant, rather than passive and to back the club’s ten shilling shares scheme to secure the club’s financial future. Part-way through the season, First Division Bootle folded and Town made application to take over their fixtures. However, their application was rejected and the season ended with some poor results. The following campaign, 1954/55, was worse and the club finished in eighteenth position yet, curiously, were promoted back to the First Division. Predictably, 1955/56, in the First Division, was a bridge too far. Three wins and three draws from 38 games (conceding 110 goals) resulted in a last place finish and, more importantly, the bitter realisation that ambitions for higher status were further away than ever before. Vodkat League News New Robins Book Now On SaleNew Robins Book Now On SaleNew Robins Book Now On SaleNew Robins Book Now On Sale

Bobbin' Along - a 162 page book detailing the Wigan Robin Park's first season in the Vodkat League - is now on sale. Written by the club's media officer Andrew Vaughan, it is a retrospective look at the 2008/9 season. The book takes a wry look at the ups, downs, mud, sweat and beers of that season while at the same time recording all the facts and figures. Vaughan is a well-known figure in local writing circles. He was the founder of the original Wigan Athletic fanzine Cockney Latic and co-

founder of The Mudhutter fanzine. He is the author of Punk Football and co-author with Martin Tarbuck of Pies and Prejudice both available from Mudhuts Media. His first novel Faded Lois Dreams - set in London in 1982 on the cusp of what is now known as the casual movement - will be released at the beginning of October 2010 and has already received lavish praise for its inventiveness, literary breadth and poetic brilliance. Bobbin' Along, Vaughan admits, is a much more simple book. "Basically it is just a gentle stroll through the Robins' debut season in the Vodkat League. "It's just my view of the club, the league and football at this level. "There's plenty of humour and some insights into modern football but I've mainly written it as a memento for all those involved and to raise the profile of the club, the league and non-league football in general. "Of course if we can make a bit of money for the club that would be great also." Vaughan, like many, struggles with aspects of the modern game - and everything that goes with it - and readily admits his love of football has been re-ignited by the non-league game.” "It isn't for everybody, but I like the friendliness and honesty of the game at the grassroots level." Bobbin' Along can be ordered by sending a cheque (made payable to Wigan Robin Park Football Club) for £10 along with your name, address, phone number and email address to: Robin Park Arena, Loire Drive, Newtown, Wigan WN5 0UN. If people could mark the envelope for the attention of the Robins' secretary Taffy Roberts that would help. It will also be available at all of Wigan Robin Park's home matches, starting this Saturday when Irlam visit the Arena.

Robins Announce New Boss Selby Town have announced their new management team for the 2010/2011 season. An official statement from the club reads: "Selby Town FC would like to thank Bob Lyon and Gary Cygan for the tremendous work they have done for the club during their tenure.

"They have consistently produced a very good team and may have been let down by the committee in that the funding has not been as consistent. Andy Bodle and Bob's family also need mentioning for all their hard work behind the scenes. The announcement of Bob's resignation came as a surprise but he did honour his agreement to see out the season.” "It is testament to his managerial expertise that he managed to field a team after losing so many players when the money ran out. The lads who played during the last month were tremendous and we would like to express our thanks to them also. "We now have to announce the appointment of a new manager whose name is Michael Gray and his assistant John Steeples.” "We hope they can carry on where Bob and Gary left off and take Selby Town forward into a new era. "The club were very sad at losing Bob and Gary but we have to move on after Bob decided he could take the club no further." The new management team have also released a statement, reading: "We are pleased to be given the opportunity to manage a good club like Selby Town. It's a big step for us both from being the assistant manager and coach at Armthorpe Welfare.” "But, we have always thought Selby were a bit of a sleeping giant in non-league football and are therefore relishing the challenge. We wish Des Bennett all the success he deserves for all his hard work he does at Armthorpe Welfare and we are proud of what we have achieved together in the past five seasons. We would like to thank Bob & Gary for all the hard work they have done at Selby. Having played Selby a number of times, they play the game how it should be played and we hope to continue in the same style. John and myself have come from a good football background, John having been a professional footballer and myself playing at a high standard.” "I have been a coach at Grimsby Town School of Excellence for the past eleven years, achieving the UEFA B licence and in the process of obtaining my UEFA A licence. "We know this League inside out and, given our good contacts in non-league football, we hope that this will help us achieve our goals. "Having met the chairman Ralph Pierce and secretary Tom Arkley, we can see how passionate they are about the club and we are looking forward to working together to get the club stable and moving in the right direction both on and off the field.”

A young chap is walking home from a night out in a club. It’s a cold, wet, windy evening, and he’s tired and freezing. Most of the streetlights in the area are broken, and the silence is penetrated only by the occasional sound of urban wildlife searching through dustbins. Suddenly, he detects a strange noise behind him. Bump.…...Bump…....Bump.….… Startled by this he looks over his shoulder and, to his amazement, through the driving rain he sees the faint but unmistakeable outline of a large box turning into his road. Bump……Bump……Bump.…... Momentarily frozen to the spot as the box approaches from the shadows, he is able to make out its shape more clearly and sees that it’s a coffin. Wanting nothing to do with this, he puts his head down and starts walking briskly home. Bump….…Bump….…Bump.....…. He can feel the coffin gaining on him, and starts walking even faster.

Bump…….Bump….…Bump….…Bump….…Bump….…Bump…... The coffin is closing with every step so he starts to jog, but hears his pursuer speed up. Bump…Bump…Bump…Bump…Bump…Bump…Bump…Bump…… At last he makes it to his front door, but knows the coffin is only a few seconds behind. Fumbling around in his pocket he pulls out his keys and, his hand trembling, he manages to unlock the door and dive inside, slamming it shut behind him. In relief he slumps onto the bottom step of the stairs, panting heavily, with his head in his hands. Immediately there is a loud crash, and he looks up to see the coffin smashing its way through the front door. The force of the impact breaks the catch off the coffin, allowing the lid to swing freely on its rusty hinges as it continues the chase. Bump…Screech…Bump…Screech…Bump…Screech… In horror the young lad turns and, as fast as his shaking legs will carry him, bolts upstairs. He hears the coffin start to follow him up the stairs. Bump…Screech…Hop…Bump… Screech…Hop…Bump…Screech…Hop… and flees into the bathroom, locking the door. Bump……Screech….…Hop…..… The coffin reaches the landing and launches itself at the bathroom door which, with an almighty crack, disintegrates in a shower of splinters. The coffin stands in the doorway for a moment, then starts to advance on the terrified lad. Bump….…Screech….… In an instinctive attempt to save his skin, the lad grabs a bar of Imperial Leather soap and chucks it at the coffin, but to no avail. Bump…....Screech..….. He finds a can of Lynx deodorant and throws it at the coffin with all his might. No effect. Bump….…Screech….…Bump….…Screech….… In a final act of desperation he picks up a bottle of Benylin and hurls it with his last ounce of strength ...... and the coffin stops.
