Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Glossop North End. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. This is not the first meeting of these clubs this season, in fact this is meeting number four as the clubs met in the FA Cup, twice with a draw in the initial game at Knowsley Road before Glossop ran out 3-1 winners at Surrey Street after extra time in the replay. Our second visit to Surrey Street saw Town race into an early two goal lead before eventually winning 4-2. We have had mixed fortunes since we hosted Formby here ten days ago. That evening saw us fall to out first defeat of the season here at Edge Green Street in a game where we were never in front. We were 1-0 and 2-1 down in the first half before drawing level at 2-2 just before the interval. We then shipped two goals in the second period, both penalties before clawing our way back into the match through two own goals the second of which came just into added on time. There was still time for us to lose the match as the visitors netted 4 minutes into added on time to take the spoils with a 5-4 win. We then visited Rossendale last Saturday and secured a return to winning ways with a 4-2 victory. A brace of first half goals from Liam Pearson saw us two go 2-0 up including a peach from just inside the Rossendale half. A late goal for the hosts in the first half saw Town with just a single goal lead going into the interval before netting twice in the second period, Ian Frazer scoring direct from a corner and Daley Woods firing home before a late consolation for the hosts. The trip to Squires Gate on Tuesday evening was a bizarre game as Town dominated possession and created plenty of chances but failed to net and some how ended up on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line, being responsible for their own downfall having a hand in all four goals scored by the hosts. We will next be here at Edge Green Street on Tuesday 16th November when we host Skelmersdale United in the 2nd Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup, Kick off 7.45pm Lets get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends from Glossop North End FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own ‘home’ support are treated to an entertaining game! The two teams have met three times already this season, battling out a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup at Knowsley Road which eventually saw the ‘Hillmen’ progress following an extra time 3-1 victory in the replay at Surrey Street. Town did gain some revenge for that defeat when goals from Dyson (2), Deakin and Mahoney saw us take three points in a 2-4 victory at the end of September. Today will no doubt prove to be another entertaining and tough game as Glossop’s recent poor form has been reversed with two wins in the last week over Bacup Borough (2-1) and Runcorn Linnets (2-1). Our own form has been mixed in the past seven days with a good performance at Rossendale United last Saturday where we ran out 2-4 winners in a game which should have seen our goal difference benefit by a far greater margin. Tuesday evening we travelled to Squires Gate and after a goalless first half no-one could have predicted the final 4-0 score-line which suggests a real drubbing for Town. It was far from the truth as Town dominated both possession and goal attempts by some way. Unfortunately, it’s goals that count and individual errors and some calamitous defending were major factors in at least three of the goals. To be fair they were the sorts of errors you get once in every half a dozen or so games and even then you don’t always get punished - Tuesday was a prime example of a team who benefited on every occasion from our mistakes and for the first time in 18 games we drew a blank at the other end - surprising as we had scored 22 goals to date in October!! Let’s hope the lads bounce back this afternoon and don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. Finally, this afternoon is our third 100+ Club Draw of the season - strange coincidence is that Glossop have been our opponents on the last Saturday of the month in August, September and now October!!! In Town Today . . . Glossop North End were founded in 1886 and began by playing friendly amateur matches. They played at a variety of grounds, including Pygrove, Silk Street, Water lane, and Cemetery Road before settling on North Road. The club joined the North Cheshire League in 1890, before moving to the Combination in 1894, becoming a professional club and introducing professional players. The club moved again to the Midland League in 1896 before being elected after their third application, to the Second Division of the Football League in 1898. The club won promotion in that first season, after finishing second to Manchester City, ( and finishing above Newton Heath, who of course went on to become Manchester United).

In the Summer of 1899, the club changed it’s name to Glossop FC. Sadly though, the glory didn’t last, as The Hillsmen were relegated after just the one season. They struggled to just 4 victories and finishing bottom, were relegated back to the Second Division. However they did manage a 1-0 victory at home to then Champions Aston Villa and beat another future European Champion side when they thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0. In 1908/09, the club recorded their best FA Cup performance when they reached the quarter finals, before losing in a replay at Bristol City. However, the adventure had been financed by cotton magnate Samuel Hill-Wood, and with that industry in terminal decline (at least as far as Glossop and surrounding area was concerned) he upped sticks to London, investing his money in, and becoming chairman of Arsenal, who were elected to the top division from where they have never been relegated. Indeed his great grandson , Peter Hill-Wood is still chairman there. The club then struggled for several seasons (though it did manage it’s record attendance of 10,736 against former namesakes Preston North End in the FA Cup during the 1913-14 season), finishing bottom at the end of the 1914-15 season. With the onset of World War 1 the Football League closed down until the start of the 1919-20 season, by which time Glossop had dropped out of the League, and started the 1919-20 season in the Lancashire Combination, sharing a ground with Northern Nomads for several years. Although no longer in the illustrious big league, Glossop endured thanks to Oswald Partington MP; a former captain in the 1890’s, who reformed the club after the Great War. To this day Glossop are often cited as the smallest town in England to be home to a Football League top Division Club. After just one season, the club dropped out of the Lancashire combination and into the Manchester League of which they were champions in 1927/28, and also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Glossop again ceased playing during the Second World War and then rejoined the Manchester League. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 Glossop moved from their original League ground at North Road to the present ground; the ‘Arthur Goldthorpe Stadium’, better known as Surrey Street. Goldthorpe was a local Estate Agent who made a donation of £700 to build the stadium – over half the cost. A crowd of 2000 attended the official opening of the ground, and the improved facilities meant the club were accepted back into the Lancashire Combination.

. . . Glossop North End The Club almost went out of business in the 1990/91 season when the then Chairman sold the ground to the local Council and left the Club with huge debts thanks to criminal activity. The new Board of Directors took over in January 1991 and reconstituted the Club, reverting to the original North End name which had been abandoned back in 1898. (the name incidentally, was homage to Preston, who Samuel Hill-Wood had greatly admired). During the summer of 1992, floodlights were erected by volunteer supporters, with many of materials being donated by the local community in order that the ground could meet first division standards. In 1997 Glossop North End AFC won the Manchester Premier Cup under the guidance of Manager Syd White, beating Trafford FC at Old Trafford, and retained the title in 1998 with a 1-0 victory over Radcliffe Borough at Maine Road. When Chairman of the club in the 2000-01 season, Syd White stepped in temporarily following Mickey Boyle’s departure and again led the team to silverware, with the club winning the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history, beating Glapwell in a two-legged final. Chris Nicholson was then appointed as manager in the summer of 2001 and instilled a superb spirit at the club again, following a few unsettled seasons, where final league positions were on a downward slide, and relegation battles had been faced before safety was secured. After two seasons, Chris had reversed this trend; the 2004/2005 season was the best for 7 years, finishing 13th, reaching a semi-final and producing the league’s highest scorer with 40 goals, Garry Kharas. Chris and assistant Steve Young introduced a number of young players from the successful league/cup winning reserve side of 2003-04 in the years that followed, and in 2006-2007 North Endhad their youngest squad for many years, and finished a creditable 9th in the NWCFL, the highest position achieved by Chris in his 6 seasons. When Nicholson announced his intention to step down at the end of the 2006/2007 season, due to his impending emigration to Australia, the club advertised the vacancy, and despite fierce competition for the job, Assistant Manager Steve Young was appointed for the start of the 2007/08 season. Steve’s appointment, along with that of his vital right hand man Terry Hincks, has seen on-field results improve dramatically, with the team finishing 7th and 5th in their two seasons at the helm.. The biggest day in the history of the club came in 2008/09, when they embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 Whitley Bay — the run has awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town, and promotion to the Evo-Stick League is a stated aim, along with ambitious ground development plans. 2009/10 started off in disappointing fashion with an FA Vase hangover but the club recovered to finish in 7th position doing the double over Town in the process. With a thriving Supporters Club, who funded and built the clubs new dugouts, helping to generate interest in the club, everyone at Surrey Street is hugely hopeful that Glossop North End can now plan for an exciting future.

Match Report . . . Sat 23rd October 2010 Vodkat Premier Division Rossendale Utd 2-4 St Helens Town St Helens Town bounced back to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Rossendale United at Dark Lane this afternoon. The weather was like the ground name as the rain sheeted down for most of the contest but the mood for the visitors was bright from the early stages. The visitors took an early lead when on the first meaningful attack of the contest saw Iain Dyson find Daley Woods on the right wing he was disposed by Keith Wedge at the cost of a throw in and Woods quick thinking saw him take the throw in quickly finding Liam Pearson in the box and he did well beating a couple of defenders before firing past the keeper on his near post. Moments later a right wing cross from Woods found Dyson on the far post but he could not direct his header on target. At the other end of the park Dale Newbrook had to be alert to keep his team in the lead as he got down well to keep out an effort from Ryan Dunnun on 15 minutes. Swiftly, Town threatened the Rossendale goal again when Pearson linked with Woods on the edge of the box with the latter chesting the ball down before shooting on the turn with Martin Campbell turning the effort around the post. Town doubled their lead on 30 minutes from what seemed like an innocuous position. Pearson collected the ball just inside the Rossendale half and spotting the home stopper Campbell off his line decided to try his luck shooting goalwards from all of 45 yards, Campbell saw the shot early but did not seem to alter his position and only managed to tip the effort into his own net. Town created another brace of chances when first Ian Frazer flicked on for Dyson to chest down and his effort from the edge of the box went wide of the upright and Pearson found Mike Kavanagh in space in the area but his could not steer his shot on target. Rossendale came within the width of a post on pulling one back on 37 minutes when a left wing corner with flicked on by Lee Knowles on the front post with the ball striking the right hand upright before being cleared from danger. The hosts did halve the deficit in the final minute of the first period which owed a certain amount to luck as an attempt to clear a ball into the Town box took a couple of deflections before falling kindly for Knowles to fire the loose ball home into the bottom right hand corner of the net from the left side of the area. Town started the second half well with Woods having two great chances to extend the lead. A quick counter attack on 49 minutes saw Dyson stroke a ball into the path of Woods and he advanced goalwards before firing off an effort that beat Campbell but found the side netting. Less than 60 seconds later an almost identical move saw Peter Birch this time find Woods and he got closer to goal this time but the result was the same as he again shot into the side netting. Rossendale’s Dunnun caused Town a problem on 55 minutes when he cut inside from the left wing and fired off a shot that Newbrook got down quickly to hold and avert the danger. The visitors restored their two goal cushion after 66 minutes when a Frazer corner from the left wing evaded all the gathered players in the box and found its way into the back of the net without a touch. Five minutes after the third goal Town almost added a fourth when Woods again found joy on the right and his cross come shot flashed across the face of the goal and Dyson was just unable to turn it home on the far post. With ten minutes left to play Rossendale almost set up a grandstand finish as David Gray found himself one on one with Newbrook in the Town goal but he could not outsmart the Town stopper as he saved the initial effort and kicked the loose ball away from the danger area whist still prostate on the ground. Pearson had a chance to complete his hat-trick on 88 minutes when he collected a through ball on the edge of the box and his lobbed effort looked to have the beating of Campbell but not the crossbar as it went just over the bar. In added on time Woods made amends for the brace of misses at the start of the second half as he put the result beyond doubt after as he powerfully fired homes Dyson’s pinpoint ball after Dyson had won the ball in the middle of the park. The hosts netted a late consolation through Knowles in the fifth minute of added on time but it was too little too late as the visitors returned to Merseyside with all three points.

St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season

shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Liam Ryder: Another summer 2010 signing by Lee Riley, 22 year old Liam hails from Rainhill and is a strong and pacey left sided defender who also has an eye for the odd goal. Peter Birch: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Had a spell with Town last season before moving onto Skelmersdale United. Started this season at Formby before rejoining at the start of October 2010. Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Can play on the right of midfield or as the main striker. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables.

Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington in 2008 for a second spell having previously been with the club under Jimmy McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Mike Kavanagh: Joined the Town ranks in September 2010. Can play as a striker or on the right side of midfield. A player who likes to attack defenders with his pace. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

Town Travel with Toyota St Helens Town main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool are delighted to announce an additional sponsorship package as the Merseyside dealership have agreed to a unique way of supporting the club’s travel arrangements for their forthcoming FA Vase 2nd Round encounter. Town’s opening three rounds of this season’s FA Carlsberg Vase have all been at ‘home’ (two at Atherton Collieries and one at Ashton Town) but the 2nd Round sees the 1987 Vase winners paired with Koolsport Northern Counties East League Premier Division outfit Winterton Rangers who are based in North Lincolnshire. Johnsons have agreed to cover the costs of any Town supporter wishing to travel on the official club coach which could net the club a significant sum and save each travelling fan the usual coach fee of £10.

Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, explained, “We had agreed earlier in the season that we would look at additional support for the club and this is an opportunity to ensure there’s a good level of support at an important FA Vase fixture.” He added, “While we know the club will profit from any additional sponsorship money, the players and management will also benefit from a good travelling support, so the more supporters the better.” Club Chairman John McKiernan said, “This is

Match Report 2 . . . Tuesday 26th October 2010 Vodkat League, Premier Division Squires Gate 4-0 St Helens Town St Helens Town sank to their heaviest defeat of the season this evening in Blackpool, on a night when they dominated proceedings for large periods but were ultimately wasteful in front of goal and architects of their own downfall at the other end of the park, having a hand in all of the hosts four goals. The game started off well for Town as they had plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges and an early ball into the box by Ian Frazer towards Iain Dyson had to be diverted behind by Tom Bartlett with the Town striker looking to send the ball home at the far post. A couple of minutes later Mike Fargher challenged for a high ball with the home goalkeeper, who decided to punch rather than catch and got no distance on his effort, the ball was collected by the alter Fargher and he fed Dyson on the edge of the box with the resultant effort going just wide of the left hand upright. At the other end against the early run of play Town had Dale Newbrook to thank for not going behind. A left wing corner was sent into the box and Bartlett’s free header at the far post was on target until the Town stopper got down well to push his effort around the post. The next danger for Town came via another left wing corner this time it was Ken Mayers who met the centre but he could only head wide of the target. Town finished the half as they had started it, in control and threatening the home goal. The best chance of the half fell to top scorer Liam Pearson on 23 minutes, John Elias did well to advance down the right and he sent a dangerous ball into the box, Bartlett misjudged the cross and Pearson took the ball down well before getting his shot off for what looked like a certain goal but the striker could not get enough power on his effort and the keeper got down well to block the shot. The final effort of the half saw Pearson and Fargher link up on the right with the latter sending a cross to the far post which Dyson was looking to turn home on but the ball just evaded his despairing slide on the far post and the two teams went into the interval level. The second half was not to start well for Town as an innocuous looking free kick on the right touchline just inside the Squires Gate half Andy Richards delivered the ball to the far post and Newbrook looked to have the situation under control but the swirling wind took effect and the stopper lost the ball and Zac Thomas had the simple task of tapping home to break the deadlock. Town again dominated after this goal taking the game to the visitors for twenty minutes. Frazer sent a left wing corner into the box which Pearson rose highest to meet but Neil Beesley did well to push his effort around the upright. Dyson collected a through ball just after the hour mark and looked well positioned to level but for an excellent block from Bartlett. Another chance fell to Dyson a minute later when Pearson countered quickly and squared across the box to Dyson whose effort on the half volley was well struck but went just over the angle of the post and crossbar. The period of pressure ended with a corner which cause havoc in the Gate box, Luke Faulkner got a touch which broke to Dyson and his flashed the ball back goalwards and it could have gone anywhere as it hit a couple of legs before being smuggled away from danger. Town then fell further behind as a mix up between Newbrook and Ryder saw the pair clatter each other and Mayers had the simple task of running the ball into the unguarded net, adding to the general dismay for the visitors. Normal service was resumed with skipper Ben Kay shooting over from a corner and Dyson sending a ball into the box from the right which Phil Mitchell somehow managed to fire wide of the post when it seemed easier to score. Pearson then attempted to link with Dyson as he played a ball over the top of the backline but for the third time Dyson’s lunge could not see him make contact with the ball. Another sucker punch saw Town fall three behind when a poor free kick from Town in their own half set up an attack for Gate and they made no mistake with Gareth Lewis shooting home. Again the bulk of the possession after the third effort was Town’s with chances falling to Fargher after a one-two with Pearson, which curled just wide of the post and substitute Marc Stephens carved out an opening for himself which looked to be going in the top corner but for an excellent save from Beesley. Dyson almost pulled one back for Town as the game entered the final minute of normal time as he collected a through ball and bore down on goal only for his effort from 8 yards to be kept out by Beesley and as the rebound broke to Kay the stopper had recovered enough to keep the second effort out. To rub further salt into the Town wounds the hosts netted a fourth in added on time as Town failed to clear a corner and the ball was sent back into the box for Alex McKendrick to gratefully fire home giving the scoreline an undeserved bias which in no way reflected the balance of the game.

Around The Grounds Dark Lane - Rossendale United

After the long run of home matches it was nice to get back on the road again and it was a visit to a new ground for me as we ventured to Dark Lane to take on Rossendale United who re-joined the North West Counties League this season after being relegated from the Northern Premier League, Division One North last term. The site of the ground contains an ample car park and the clubhouse is separate from the ground. The club-

house is well sized with access to the usual variety of drinks and both a pool table and dart board. The ground is set a the far end of the site and once through the turnstiles which are situated at the right hand corner of the ground, upon entering on your right their is a well stocked if small club shop and immediately in front of you is a large banked cover terrace behind the goal at the right end of the pitch. On your left is the main stand which houses all the seats in the ground and is an “old fashioned” wooden stand with 95% of the structure being wooden including all the seats. Un-derneath this stand is the dressing rooms and the committee room which has to be one of the best I have seen in the Vodkat League. Advancing along to the nearside touchline towards the far end of the pitch is hard standing and behind the goal at the far end of the pitch is a small covered area of hard standing which could cause some of the more tall individuals to band their heads! The far side touchline sees open hard standing along the length and all in all this ground is in the upper echelons in the Division and well worth a visit

All Our Yesterdays . . . St. Helens Town Programme Review – Part 4 Moving on to the 1970s, no programmes have yet emerged from Town’s Lancashire Combination Championship season of 1971/72, but a rarity is a Formby programme from the previous season. For the game at Brows Lane on 28th November 1970, Formby produced an 8-page programme under the title “Squirrels Tale.” The outside four pages were pre-printed, with two pages of advertisements, whilst the inside four were typewritten. In his editorial, chairman Trevor Hitchen discussed various issues, including questions posed to him by supporters, one of which was why the club had not filled in the holes in the car park. 40 years on, new ground, no change there then! The league table had Dukinfield Town as league leaders, followed by Prestwich Heys, Radcliffe Borough and Accrington Stanley (1968), the re-formed club, recently promoted to League Two. Formby came next, with St. Helens Town next to bottom, with only Wigan Rovers below them. Town’s number 9 was Stanley, a recent recruit from Wigan Athletic. Two years later, Skelmersdale United produced a 6-page programme for the Lancashire FA Trophy First Round game at White Moss Park on 25th November 1972. In the early days of decimalisation, the price was 3p and there was a photograph on the front cover. Skem’ were, by then, members of the Northern Premier League, whilst Town were, of course, reigning Champions of the Lancashire Combination. The programme records the fact that Town had “walked away” with the Championship, having lost only once, that to Kirkby Town. By way of advertising, there were rival ads for local papers Skelmersdale New Town Advertiser and the Skelmersdale Reporter, both priced at 4p, whilst in the middle of the team lines was a small, but distinctive, beer barrel, with the name Watneys. The brewers were big sponsors in League as well as non-league football in the 1970s. Had the programme been printed in colour, the Barrel would undoubtedly have been Red.

After a few years of not producing programmes, St. Helens Town issued several during the 1973/74 season. These were 6-page, fold-out issues, pre-printed with cover and advertisements, accounting for 3 of the pages. Three pages were left blank and the issue featured is that for the Second Leg of the Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final at Hoghton Road on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May 1974. Visitors were Accrington Stanley and Town went on to win the trophy with a 1-0 win, as the sides had drawn 2-2 in the First Leg. Advertising rights had been acquired by Allsports Publicity Co. Ltd. Of Wembley and the printers were The Brampton Press of Hersham, Surrey. Match notes were run off on one page on a Gestetner machine, the typing all being in capitals. The programme was priced at 2p and the officials of the club were listed on the front cover: Chairman was J. Chorley, Treasurer R. Leyland and Hon. Secretary was R. Southcote of No. 1 Flat, Sherdley Gardens. The management committee was J. Grice, J. Wright (Vice-Chairman), J. Roscoe, G. Barrett and N. Cubby.

Town moved to the Cheshire League in 1975 and Rhyl issued an 8-page programme, printed black on white, priced at 5p for the league game on 28th February 1976. The

. . . Programme Review Part 4 teams had already met at Belle Vue earlier in the season, when Town went down 4-2 in an FA Cup tie. St. Helens were described as Micky “Flick’s” outfit, whatever that meant. Later that year, on 6th November, Town travelled to Middlewich Athletic. “The Witch” was a 16-page programme, priced at 6p, and was full of adverts and statistics. This was the second season the clubs had met. In 1975/76, Middlewich had won their home game 4-2 before 222 fans whilst the game at Hoghton Road had finished 0-0. This time around, Town were said to be managed by A. Hampson (ex-South Liverpool and Chorley) and had 5 contract players including the former South Liverpool pair Reason and Flexen and leading scorers at that stage were Duffy with 7 and Flexen 6. Marine have produced very good programmes for many years and the issue for the game played on 20th September

1977 was no exception. Another 16-page production, the pages were pre-printed with adverts and general information and the spaces filled with typed script and duplicated. Curiously, the print was in red. The cover included an action shot and boasted of being the Best Non-League Programme 1976/77. The teams had already drawn 1-1 at Hoghton Road that season, Carl Lamm netting Town’s equaliser. St. Helens were 11th in the table, Marine were second, a point behind Stalybridge Celtic.

Another good programme was Ashton United, who produced a 12-page issue for the game at Hurst Cross on 31st October 1978, their Centenary Year. Priced at 6p, there were 8 pages of adverts. Town were 18th in the table, four places off the bottom, with only one win from 10 games. St. Helens Town began producing programmes on a regular basis again in 1979/80 season and that featured is for the FA Trophy game against Burscough at Hoghton Road on 27th October 1979. 10p for 8 pages represented average value for money in those days. St. Helens Star, a new venture in those early days of free local newspapers, advertised on the front cover, whereas the back cover was taken up by Helena House Co-Op Travel Service and A.

Vodkat League News Steve Halliwell Leaves Ashton Athletic

Steve Halliwell has announced he is stepping down as Chairman of Ashton Athletic with immediate effect. Steve joined the club around 20 years ago, on the invitation of the President at the time Tommy Aspinall, after he had to give up his refereeing career through injury. Soon afterwards he took over as club Secretary, a role he held until four years ago when he became Chairman. Steve explained: "My decision to leave Ashton Athletic, and indeed football for the foreseeable future, is a decision that has taken the best part of 18 months to make. On a personal note it was a big decision on my part, having been involved at various levels within football since being 17.

"I love my football and hate to think that I was letting down a club that deserves the highest profile. However, the pressures of trying to maintain my career during this everlasting credit crunch, coupled with family issues and of course the demands of football at this level has finally become too much and I feel something must give. Quite simply I can no longer deal with the amount of football enquiries that I receive during my working day, in addition to arriving home most days and having to deal with more football related matters. With the number of teams the club has now, it's a big task to keep in contact with them all, and deal with all the issues that arise. I've sat down many times over the last 6 months and pondered a number of solutions, discussed with those close to me within the club and each time the heart has controlled the head and I've carried on with little downtime or private life. The job of Chairman needs to involve 100% committment and whoever does the job needs to able to lead from the front and represent the club at all times. I just can't give the time any more. "Following the recent managerial changes within the club, there are a number of new faces around now and I therefore feel this is the correct time to announce my departure. It will allow the club to correctly rebuild, get away from any lasting feeling of negativity, and be able to build a new future. The committee can lead from the front with the new first team manager Paul Moore, by giving him the backing and support he deserves. Ex Wigan Athletic player comes to Cannon Park Worksop Town of the Evo-Stik Premier League have signed former Scotland Under 21 International striker/midfielder, David Graham from Sheffield F.C. Born in Edinburgh in October 1978 he started his career with Glasgow Rangers before moving to Dunfermline Athletic where he went on loan to Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He moved down South to Torquay United and scored 47 goals in 120 appearances there, before being sold to Wigan Athletic where he was in the side that won promotion to the Premiership. In 2005 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday and had loan spells at Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Torquay United. He also played for Gillingham and Lincoln City before

moving into Non-League with Sheffield FC. He moved on to Ilkeston Town but a bad injury saw him miss a lot of last season, he was however back in the side when the club folded earlier this season he then went back to Sheffield FC. Tigers manager Martin McIntosh knows the player well and was delighted to have him in the squad the midweek match against Matlock Town at Cannon Park Retford.

Two bricklayers are sitting on top of a skyscraper, talking about this and that, when one of them suddenly stands up, looks down at his feet, launches himself off the edge of the building, and plummets to the pavement below. The shocked foreman comes rushing over and asks the remaining bricklayer why his mate has suddenly leapt to his death. “Beats me,” replies the bemused man, scratching his head. “We were chatting away about our families and I was just telling him that my uncle flew in Wellingtons during the war.” Little Tommy is sitting on a park bench, munching on one chocolate bar

after another. After devouring the sixth one, a man on the next bench comes across to him and says, “Son, do you know that eating all that chocolate isn’t good for you? It will give you acne, rot your teeth, and make you fat.” Tommy looks up at the man, “Well, mister, my grand-dad lived to be 107 years old,” he announces. “Did he eat six chocolate bars at a time?” asks the man. “No, he didn’t” replies Tommy. “He just minded his own bloody business.” During a seminar on efficiency, a businessman presents a case study on his wife’s routine for cooking breakfast. “After a few days of observation, I determined what was slowing her down and then suggested ways to speed up the process,” he explains to the audience. “And did it work?” someone asks. “It most certainly did,” replies the businessman. “Instead of it taking her twenty minutes to cook my breakfast, it now takes me only nine.” As he enters his local bank, a man slips on the polished floor, then stumbles forward and just manages to grab a hold of the counter to stop himself from falling flat on his face. “Hello, sir,” trills the cashier, sweetly. “I’m guessing you’re here to check your balance.” An intensive care patient, oxygen mask in place, beckons a nurse over to his bedside where she leans forward to listen to him. “Have my testicles gone black?” he asks through the contraption covering his face. The startled young woman asks him to repeat the question. “Have my testicles gone black?” he enquires. The nurse gently lifts the bedclothes and carefully examines him from all angles. “No, they’re the right colour,” she says, reassuringly, as she replaces the bedding.
