From the Pastor’s DeskFollowing the completion of the Seasons of Lent/Easter on the evening of Pentecost Sunday we have reverted liturgically to the celebration of Ordinary Time. We use this description in the Liturgical Year outside the Liturgical Seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent /Easter to empha-size the unity of the Church Year. Prior to this, the Sundays/Weeks after the celebration of the Christmas Season were referred to as “Sundays after Epiphany”, following the celebration of Easter, Sundays/Weekdays were referred to as “Sundays after Pentecost”. Therefore we now celebrate Thirty-Four Weeks of Ordinary Time together with the Liturgical Seasons. Easter being a variable date, the number of weeks before Lent varies from year to year. This year we re-sumed Ordinary Time after Pentecost with Week 9.

We resume this period of Ordinary Time with two special celebrations. This Sunday we cel-ebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. We are Christian because we profess belief in the Most Holy Trinity. Jesus, prior to the Ascension, commissioned the disciples and His Church to go make disciples of all nations “Baptizing them in the the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. This is a complex concept, the complexity is contained in the fact that we believe in a Triune God of Three Divine Persons, as revealed to us by Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity. Every time we bless ourselves or participate in the celebration of the sacraments we invoke the name of the Trinity. We refer to it as a Mystery, yet it is accessible to us. This week’s celebration should serve to deepen our belief in the Most Holy Trinity.

This Tuesday, June 13, we will celebrate the Feast of one the most popular saints of all time, St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231), a Franciscan who was a contemporary of St. Francis. Even though we associate him with the Italian city of Padua, he was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He was attracted to the Franciscans because he wished to become a missionary. His health did not permit this and he spent his active years in Padua, Italy. During his lifetime he was known for his great piety and attracted many pilgrims to the Franciscan Friary. He died at the relatively young age of 36 years and was canonized a year after after his death. He is most associated with the recovery of lost objects. Donations given in his honor are usually applied to feeding the hun-gry and poor (St. Anthony’s Bread). Representations of St. Anthony appear in our church in his shrine at the K street side altar, and as a medallion above that niche.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Sacramento, has an opening for a full-time Director of Faith Formation. This is a large, vibrant parish with Faith Formation Programs for pre-K through adults. Under the direction of the Pastor, the Director of Faith Formation is responsible for building catechetical teams to implement all aspects of the programs, including sacramental preparation, recruitment and training of catechists, and curriculum. In the year 1219 St. Francis of Assisi went to Egypt to visit the Sultan, Malik-al-Kamil. In April of this year Pope Francis also visited Egypt, urging Christians and Muslims to walk together not as enemies but as “fellow travelers.” In the spirit of unity demonstrated by both Pope and St. Francis, join us in this event and help create a greater awareness and understanding among our

parishioners and our Muslim brothers and sisters. Become a fellow traveler and participate in this informal, interfaith evening as we host an Iftar dinner on June 15 at the Salam Center Mosque in Sacramento:

STAFFING CHANGESAs many parishioners have noticed, our collec-tions have diminished over the past few months, and the bequests that the parish has been blessed with cannot be used for day-to-day operations. Therefore, in consultation with the Parish Finance Committee, we have had to make some difficult decisions regarding staffing. In order to bring our parish budget into balance, the position of Parish Secretary has been eliminated as a paid position effective July 1. Unfortunately, that means that SJeanay Willis Bolden’s last day in the office will be June 30. We thank SJeanay for her years of dedicated service as our Parish Secretary and wish her well as she seeks new opportunities.

SEEKING VOLUNTEER RECEPTIONISTSBeginning July 1, the Parish Office will be staffed by Volunteer Receptionists who will serve in 4-hour shifts once per week. In a welcoming and professional manner, consistent with our Parish Mission Statement, Volunteer Receptionists will welcome visitors to the Parish Office, answer incoming calls, provide information, and do light office work. Bob ReidBob was appointed last October by our Pastor to fill a vacancy, and currently serves as Chair of the Parish Council Buildings and Grounds Committee. He hopes to “continue working to help our Pastor and the Parish Council serve the needs of this wonderful parish community.”

Bob served as Council Chair on the Parish Council under Fr. Anthony as well as on the Baptis-mal Font committee under Fr. Ken. He currently assists with the weekly collections, is an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at the 5:15pm Mass, and has served on the Parish Picnic and Annual Gala committees for past many years.

Bob worked in the California Legislature, state government and politics for many year where he developed skillsets from successful civil service work that helped me as a Parish Coun-cil member. In 2009 Bob received a heart transplant, which was a transforming experience and reinforced his motivation to serve.

Fred Bermudez As a member of the Parish Council, Fred hopes to be an asset to the parish community and to grow in his faith in God Fred has skills and abilities with computer and research plus knowledge of financing proper-ties, and is well connected in

that industry. He is also able to do manual labor and has experience as a professional home painter.

Francine Freitas Francine as been a parishioner for almost 30 years and thinks of St. Francis as her spiritual home. She hopes to be able to honor the legacy of the Francis-cans and to help continue the tradition of St. Francis and St. Clare.

With an ability to listen to all ideas with an open mind, she realizes that compromise is important asset to accomplish goals and objectives. A volunteer for the St. Francis Loaves and Fishes team for more than 25 years , she also is part of the St. Francis Pathways for Justice Committee.

Margaret Healey“It has been my great privilege to serve on the Parish Council for the last 4 years, especially this past year. I am proud of how we, as a parish, came together and helped each other through the departure of the Franciscans. But .... there is more work to be done, and I will continue to serve the parish

by doing whatever I can to help this very special community which we are blessed to share.”

Margaret has served as Extraordinary Minister of the Eucha-rist for several years, as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Steps Ministry, as a Friday night Step Minister for past 5 years, and was a member of the 2016-17 Transition Team.

Today the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. Franciscan author Richard Rohr offers his insights on the Trinity in his latest book “The Divine Dance.” It’s a thoughtful read, and will deepen your experience (your dancing!) with the Trinity.

For your consideration, from Rohr’s book: ‘The energy in the universe is not in the planets, or in the protons or neutrons, but in the relationship between them. Not in the particles but in the space between them. Not in the cells of organisms but in the way the cells feed and give feedback to one another. Not in any precise definition of the three persons of the Trinity as much as in the relationship between the Three! This is where all the power for infinite renewal is a work:

The loving relationship between them.The infinite love between them.The dance itself.In other words, it is an entirely relational universe...’

Today’s Gospel begins with John stating: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” God loved, God loves. Re-member the focus on Spirit at Pentecost which was just last week... As Rohr writes, ‘Notice that the major metaphors for the Spirit are always dynamic, energetic, and moving: elusive wind, descending dove, falling fire, and flowing water. Spirit-led people never stop growing and changing and recognizing the new moment of opportunity...’
