111ST ST ST SUNDAY OF LENTSUNDAY OF LENTSUNDAY OF LENT

Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful opportunities before us, we can also get easily distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the desert. Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in what is good and true. What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many people. It could be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the negativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left with little psychological or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust? For many, their passions and what can be found on the internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life and free-dom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in the de-

sert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy place. Ready to go? ©LPi

Hoy es el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma. Cuaresma significa cuarenta días y es el tiempo donde se prepara la fiesta más importante del año, “La Pascua”. La Cuaresma nos recuerda el periodo de preparación para un verdadero encuentro con Dios. La Cuaresma nos invita al arrepentimiento y a la conversión. Es un tiempo sagrado para orar, dar limosna y ayunar. La Cuaresma dio inicio el 26 de febrero y termina hasta el Jueves Santo, antes de la Misa de la Cena del Señor. La Oración colectiva nos ayuda a ver con claridad el propósito de la Cuaresma: “Concédenos, Dios todopoderoso, que, por las prácticas anuales del sacramento cuaresmal, progresemos en el conocimiento del misterio de Cristo y traduzcamos su efecto en una conducta irreprochable.” Santos y perfectos, nos recomendaba el Señor Jesús el domingo pasado. ¿Lo recuerdan? Pues, ahora es el tiempo de practicar con-stantemente el vencer a las tentaciones que se presentan en el vivir cotidiano. La tentación es una gran oportunidad para vencer el mal y persistir siempre en hacer el bien. El desierto es el lugar preferido de Jesús para fortalecerse en el Espíritu del Padre. ¿A qué desierto entraremos? ¿Qué descubriremos en él? ¿A quién encontraremos? Ahora es la oportunidad de retirar el mal que hay en nuestra vida con las mismas palabras con que Jesús al final de este Evangelio rechaza al demonio, “Aléjate, Satanás, porque dice la escritura: Adorarás al Señor tu Dios, y a Él sólo servirás.” (Mateo 4:10). Con Jesús, vayamos al desierto y preparémonos para las pruebas. ¡Señor que tu misericordia nos acompañe en esta Cuaresma que comienza! ©LPi

The feast of San Isidro is May 15. In the past we have had Mass in the garden on his feast day. Sometimes we get rained out. Sometimes the day is beautiful and we have a perfect setting for gathering and praising God in the midst of plenty. On these occasions we have had food and fellowship under the sun after Mass. We like to think of this occasion as one of our rewards for gardening here. San Isidro is the patron saint of gardeners, but also of Madrid, Spain. In Madrid it is a day of great celebration and I am told that the celebrating includes throwing tomatoes at each other. I can’t think of a worse use of to-matoes, and in our climate, the tomatoes are not ready for harvest for several more months. So we have fol-lowed Mexican tradition and the kids have thrown water balloons instead. All together we have Mass, food and fun for the kids. Just the thing on an early summer evening. This year we pray for good weather on Friday, May 15 and we invite you all to join us for Mass. There will be more details in the bulletin as the date approaches.

La fiesta de San Isidro es el 15 de Mayo. En el pasado hemos tenido misa en el jardín en su fiesta. A veces nos lluev. A veces el día es hermoso y tenemos un escenario perfecto para reunir y alabar a Dios en medio de la abundancia. En estas ocasiones hemos tenido comida y compañerismo bajo el sol después de la misa. Nos gusta pensar en esta ocasión como una de nuestras recompensas por la jardinería aquí. San Isidro es el patrón de los jardineros, pero también de Madrid, España. En Madrid es un día de gran cele-bración y me dicen que la celebración incluye tirarse tomates unos a otros. No puedo pensar en un uso peor de los tomates, y en nuestro clima, los tomates no están listos para la cosecha por varios meses más. Así que hemos seguido la tradición mexicana y los niños han arrojado globos de agua. Todos juntos tenemos misa, comida y diversión para los niños. Justo lo que ocurre en una tarde de principios de verano. Este año oramos por el buen clima el viernes 15 de mayo y los invitamos a todos a unirse a nosotros para la misa. Habrá más detalles en el boletín a medida que se acerque la fecha.

Lenten Fish Fry Lenten Fish Fry Lenten Fish Fry Bring your family to the St. Cecilia McNamee Activity Center Fri-day, February 28 for the Knights of Columbus annual Lenten Fish Fry from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Baked and fried fish, mac & cheese, French fries, garlic bread and cole slaw are on the menu. Cost is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for kids under 12. Proceeds will benefit the St. Vincent De Paul chapter at St. Cecilia as their delivery van needed over $4,000.00 of repairs to continue their wonderful work. Help us multiply the fish into a large donation for the hungry.

Adoration, Benediction and Stations of the Cross begin at 6:30 PM in the church. St. Cecilia Church is located at 5105 SW Franklin Avenue in Beaverton.

El menú incluye pescado al horno y frito, macarrones con queso, papas fritas, pan de ajo y ensalada de repollo. El costo es de $ 7.00 para adultos y $ 4.00 para niños menores de 12 años. Las ganancias beneficiarán a St. Vincent De Paul de St. Cecilia ya que su camioneta de reparto necesitó más de $ 4,000.00 para las reparaciones y continuar con su maravilloso trabajo. Just as a reminder, during Lent we are called to abstain from meat on Fridays as a reminder that our Lord offered His body — a flesh sacrifice — for our sins. We also abstain from meat and fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Here the fast entails having only one full meal a day which is sufficient to maintain one’s strength. Two other meatless meals are allowed, but are to be light and penitential. Everyone14 years of age and older is bound to the law of abstinence, and everyone 18 years of age but not yet 60 is bound to the law of fasting. Of course, one must be mindful of his own physical condition. These physical sacrifices help each of us to be spiritually mindful that Our Lord suffered and died for our sins.

Todos los católicos entre las edades de 18 y 59 deben ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Ayunar significa comer una comida completa, las otras dos comidas de ese día deben ser inferior a la cantidad normal, a menos que ya se encuentran en un mínimo para una buena salud. Comer entre comidas no esta permitido, sin embargo, los líquidos como el café, la leche y los zumos de frutas están permitidos El Miércoles, 6 de marzo es un día de Ember de la Arquidiócesis. What you will learn from this workshop: (1) The ancient Church teachings on how charisms of the Holy Spirit work in your life and the life of the parish community; (2) The five steps of discerning the charisms that God has given you; (3) The signs and char-acteristics of 24 of the most common charisms of the Holy Spirit; (4) How discerning and using our charisms together can help transform/change your life and renew our parish.

Once completed, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a personal gifts interview as well as join a group of parishioners ex-ploring more deeply the charisms God has given you.
