YOUR SCHOOL’S NAME COULD BE HERE!NEWS

PAPER ADVERTISING

ARE YOU OUR NEXT AWSUM SCHOOL OF THE MONTH?This award is our way of recognising the excellent work done by the schools on our board and their teachers and marketers.

Every month, we will be selecting one school that has not only gone the extra mile to promote and distribute AWSUM News, but has also consistently been sending its monthly news on time. The chosen school will be awarded one full page of bragging space in AWSUM to the value of R15 900.

HOW TO QUALIFY:The School of the Month will be selected using a points system.• Is AWSUM being distributed to your learners via the classroom? 5• Are parents told to look out for AWSUM News via

the school communicator? 5newsletters? 5email? 5Facebook? 5other communications (please specify)? 5

• Has your school liked AWSUM News on Facebook? 5• Are we a tab on your school website? 5• Is your school news always submitted on time? 5• Have you been informing us about upcoming school events

to see how we can be of assistance? 5

PLEASE NOTE:We are aware of the fact that not all of our schools have the

various platforms at their disposal. Schools will be awarded based on the facilities available to them.

WELCOME BACK!I trust that you have had a wonderful break, and that everyone in your family is ready for what promises to be a great year. We’ve filled our first 2015 edition of AWSUM with many new gems, just for you.

With our new redesign, editorial and school content will now be found on the same pages (with the former at the top and the latter at the bottom). We are also introducing a classifieds section where you can advertise your products and services. Do you give music lessons or work as a personal trainer? Perhaps you’re looking for someone to join your lift club or buy your car. Our classifieds are for you, and they’re a steal at R150 per month.

In another move to promote our community involvement, we’re proud to introduce our AWSUM notice board. Here your school or organisation can list social events, markets, concerts and anything our readers need to know about. You will also be able to put up a poster or sponsor the board. If this sounds like your kind of advertising platform, please give our sales consultants a call, or send an email to [email protected].

At AWSUM we love our schools, which is why we’ve created the AWSUM School of the Month award. For more information on how this prestigious title as well as a full page’s worth of bragging space can

be yours, have a look at the criteria in the section below.

We’ve all only recently recovered from a very busy festive season where some of us folks probably gave to the needy,

hungry or homeless. However, it is important to remember that those who suffer don’t only need our help over the festive season, but throughout the year. Start 2015 the right way and lend a hand (or paw) to help the SOS Children’s villages or NSPCA!

We’ve been inspired by the classic movie remake of Annie (to be released nationally in theatres on 30 January 2015). Annie is a young, happy foster kid who is also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York. She never goes anywhere without her trusty sidekick, her beloved dog Sandy.

This summer kids like Annie and animals like Sandy need your help.

The SOS Children’s Villages Association of South Africa work for children who are orphaned or abandoned or whose families are unable to care for them. They give these children the opportunity to build lasting relationships within a family. With villages in Ennerdale, Mamelodi, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha, Nelspruit and Rustenburg, these guys need our help. Please visit their website to see how you can

aid a child in need. For more information on the SOS Children’s

Villages Association of South Africa please visit http://sosvillages.org.za.

Similarly, the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) takes animal welfare very seriously and its staff is committed to ensuring that animal owners recognise their responsibility to all animals in their possession. The NSPCA relies on help from their communities. There are 89 individual NSPCAs throughout South Africa who rescue, take in and care for homeless, abandoned and neglected animals every day.

You can help by donating pet food, blankets or toys and by joining the #LendAPaw campaign. You’ll find more details at www.annie-movie.co.za.

For more information on the NSPCA please visit www.nspca.co.za.

Strawberries are a spring gem that bear the promise of bountiful summer fruits that will soon be available. Their keen fruitiness makes them a flavorsome salad ingredient too.

What’s more, they can be blended with the tiniest seasoning to make an instant and vibrantly colourful dressing.

I like to select the firmest strawberries in the punnet for the salad and then use any riper strawberries to go into the blender.

Strawberries love black pepper, so be generous with the grinder in your hand.

YOU’LL NEED• 100 g baby spinach, washed and

drained• 100 g strawberries, trimmed and

quartered• ½ cucumber, peeled, deseeded and

sliced

• 1 tbsp poppy seeds• Salt and pepper to taste• Half a cup alfalfa sprouts rinsed

DRESSING• 100 g strawberries trimmed• 5 ml olive oil• 5 ml rice vinegar• Pinch of mustard

powder• Salt and pepper to taste

Combine all the ingredients except the alfalfa sprouts in a bowl. Blend dressing till smooth, drizzle over the salad, garnish with alfalfa sprouts.

Look out for our exciting competition in the next issue of AWSUM where you could win a hamper for your kitchen filled with lovely treats from Heinz Food.

JY BENODIG:• Ou deurknoppe

– enige soort• Annie Sloan CHALK

PAINT™• Dala podge• Skêr• Ou boek• Papierservet – kry ’n mooie

in die hande!• Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax

en Dark Wax• Kaasdoek (mutton cloth)• Klein kwassies

JY MAAK SÓ:1. Verf.

VERWELKOMMnr. Wessels is ’n onderwyser verbonde aan HS Strand. Hy het vandag self sy kuikenseun by HS Strand verwelkom.

100% PASS RATE MATRICS Somerset College, an independent co-educational, day and boarding school situated between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, congratulates its 118 matriculants for achieving a 100% pass rate in the 2014 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) Matric examinations. A total of 269 distinctions were obtained, with 99% of its candidates achieving the entry requirements to Bachelor Degree studies.Somerset College is one of only eleven independent schools in the Western Cape which writes the IEB and not the National Senior Certificate Examination.

Meg Fargher, the Executive Head of Somerset College, is delighted with the matric results, particularly the fact that students achieved subject averages above the IEB national average. Nearly half of all students who wrote Mathematics in particular achieved

distinctions in this subject which is an outstanding achievement. Art and the other humanities subjects were also excellent. This highlights the array of achievements.

Three Somerset College students were acknowledged by the IEB for Commendable Achievement (Candidate ranked in the top 5% of learners in 6 or more subjects and scored 80% or more for Life Orientation). They are Brandon Franckeiss, Pierre du Plessis and Sasha Tinelli. Twelve students were acknowledged by the IEB for being placed in the top 1% in their subject in the country. They are Brandon Franckeiss, Pierre du Plessis, Sasha Tinelli, Stephanie Austin, Lara du Plessis, Liesl Rabie, Alice Bednall, Bronte Davies, Adam Henman, Frances de Villiers, Hannah Habenicht and Katherine Oxley. This year, in addition to the IEB, Somerset

College has introduced the Cambridge programme. This allows students to complete their A-levels through a two- year staged route consisting of AS-levels in the first year and A-levels in the second year, with examinations written in the November of each year. The Somerset College Cambridge Programme (SCCP) students are taught in separate classes from those students who follow the IEB curriculum.

“Our purpose at Somerset College is to build futures and to develop young men and women of deep character. Our intention is that those who are educated here will flourish and graduate inspired to be dignified, compassionate, creative and aspirational people prepared to face the world courageously, mindful of their responsibility to others and to themselves,” commented Meg Fargher.

RHENISH GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL(t) 021 887 6808 (e) [email protected]

NEW ASTRO TURF Rhenish Girls’ High opened their new astro turf on Thursday, 29 January 2015. The astro has long been a dream of the hockey

girls at the school, and the opening was a celebration that was shared by the girls, sponsors and extended Rhenish Family.

NEW GRADE 8s158 fresh faced and eager Grade 8s began their exciting high school career at Rhenish Girls’ High on Tuesday 20 January. A day of orientation left them exhausted and delighted, keen to join the body of the school as they returned on 21 January for the start of the academic year.

THE PSI NATIONALS The PSI Nationals recently held in Cape Town with more than 1 700 players participating in this highly competitive tournament. Natasha Marnewick and Monique Bartsch – both Grade 10 learners at Rhenish Girls’ High – played for the Boland Foxes girls’ U16 team. The Boland teams again performed extremely well and did our region proud, with the Boland Foxes winning gold. Monique was also selected for the PSI 2014 Girls’ SA U16 All Stars Team.

RHENISH MUSIC DEPARTMENT ACHIEVES TOP RESULTSThe Rhenish Music Department has reason to blow its own trumpet. Eleven of the fourteen learners who took music in matric 2014 achieved an A in the subject. Five years ago when this group of matric music girls started at Rhenish, it would have been difficult to predict the progress they would

have made and the level of performance of which they were capable by the end of their journey. We are extremely proud of these talented young musicians and so grateful to them for sharing their beautiful music and for the professional manner in which they delivered their performances.
