It is with mixed feelings that we say ‘goodbye’ to Fr. Ken on his last weekend at St. Francis, May

28/29. We express our gratitude for his service to this community of faith, for the impact he has had on us individually and communally, and for his leader-ship into the depths of gospel living through his preaching and example. Although we will miss Fr. Ken’s joyful Franciscan spirit, we rejoice with him as he goes on to explore new ways of living his priest-hood in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. May the Lord give you peace, Fr. Ken. All are invited to attend a reception for Fr. Ken on Sunday May 29th from 1:00-3:00pm in Brunsman Hall.

How to help:

JOIN US FOR Fr. Ken’s Reception on May 29, 1-3pm

To volunteer, please contact Richard Herndandez at 443-8084 ext 114 or [email protected]

The “Fr. Ken Walking Around Fund”

Fr. Ken has done so much for many of us and our parish! Here is a man who is about to go out and

live as an itinerant preacher for several months. He won’t be able carry a bunch of “stuff” around where he’s going… so we are confident that a little “walking around money” would be appreciated – as he embarks on his new pilgrimage walk. To help make this possible the parish has set up an Online Giving fund where parishioners can make a do-nation. Visit http://bit.ly/24AhB1H. Or use the Online Giving link on the parish website: select the Quick Link option and then the “Fr. Ken Walking Around Fund.”

For those who might prefer another method, you are welcome to write a kind card with your donation and drop it in collection basket through the end of May.

• Bring “Finger Food” (No utensils needed!) If your last name begins with A-L: Appetizers: Bring “finger” appetizers, such as small sandwiches, deviled eggs, vegetables and dip, or...... your favorite appetizer—something that can be eaten without a fork or spoon.

If your last name begins with M-Z: Desserts (bring “finger” desserts, such as cookies, brownies, petits fours—something that can be eaten without a fork or spoon) Note: Be sure to mark containers with your name and phone number, please.

• Set Up, Serve, Clean Up: Volunteers are also needed to set up, greet and clean up.

The May/June issue of the Catholic Herald centers on Mental Illness and Faith and features an

interview with St. Francis parishioner and 7:30 cantor, Dana Swears, who was diagnosed with bipolar, schizoaf-fective, obsessive-compulsive, and panic disorders in 2005. Her battles with these disorders have not stopped Dana from volunteering in multiple ministries at St. Francis. Often misrepresented and even concealed in our society, mental health is an important topic of discussion to Dana, who believes that being open and sharing her personal experiences with other parishioners will raise a greater sense of awareness within our parish com-munity. Read her story - the Catholic Herald is available in our Library and online at http://faithdigital.org/Sacra-mento/ Catholic Herald photo by Cathy Joyce.

From the Pastor’s Desk

From The Transition Team

3

The members of the Transition Team thank each and every one of you for the support you’ve given us

over the past few weeks.

One of the things that change sometimes causes is a circling of the wagons; in other words, an attempt by the group facing change to keep the change out. Not here! This parish is amazing. While none of us were happy to learn that we would no longer receive pastoral care from the Franciscans, we didn’t just sit around and gripe about it. We joined hands and prayed and, as a community, re-minded ourselves that we are Franciscans too, and we’re staying put!

We will certainly miss Fr. Ken and Fr. Sebastian. However, the best way to honor their service is for each of us to do our part to ensure that the Franciscan charism remains alive and well. And, as good Franciscans, we must also strive to be open and inviting to our new pastor when

What a wonderful weekend for so many children and families of our parish com-

munity with the reception of First Eucharist. This is the first time that these children will be sharing with us the Body and Blood of Jesus, the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. Many years ago, I had the privilege of celebrat-ing a home Mass and house blessing for a family that has been dear friends for many years. I met John when he was a college student and I was a young priest. We have shared many wonderful experiences including backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, his wedding, the bap-tism of his four children, and the funeral of his Dad. John and his family are like a second family to me, he treats me as his big brother and I am the “uncle” of his children. At this the celebration of the home mass, it was very obvious that his youngest son, about five years old, was very much in tune with what was happening around the dining room table. After the reading of gospel, I asked Johnny what the Bread of Life was. His answer more than appropriate and, frankly, with much more clarity and understanding than many adults. We continued the Mass and I asked his Mom & Dad if they thought Johnny was ready to receive Eucharist. They looked at me and gave me a big smile. At the time for communion, I asked Johnny if he wanted to receive the Bread of Life. He eyes became as big as saucers, a smile from ear to ear, and he said, “YES”! I gave him communion and he seemed to drift into a mystical place. It really was wonderful to ex-perience this awe and appreciation of his sharing in Body and Blood of Jesus. It is my hope that the children this weekend will have that same awe and excitement in sharing at the table of the Lord for this first time.

It is these wonderful events that I will miss when I am no longer the pastor at St. Francis. Entering into the lives of people at baptism, first communions, confirma-tions, wedding, and in sickness, dying and death that has brought me satisfaction and the affirmation that I am making a difference in the lives of people, and the people make my life complete and much richer and holy. My last official ministry as pastor is on June 3 when I

will preside at the graduation of the eighth grade students of our school. It has been amazing to watch these children, who were in the fourth grade when I arrived, mature and grow into loving adolescents who are moving toward an adult world. They still have a way to go, but they are on the right track, and I am certain they will make our world a better place. They are great teenagers! I will be leaving on June 3, but my time as pastor does not officially end until the new pastor is appointed and takes charge of the parish. I have asked Fr. Sebastian to assume all responsibility for the pastoral ministry of our parish, which is a major undertaking. I have also asked Beth White and Richard Hernandez to assume the administrative responsibili-ties for the parish until the new pastor assumes this office. I have complete confidence that these three parish ministers will do fine until the new pastor is appointed and assumes his responsibilities. According to the law of the Church, both the pastoral council and the parish finance council cease to exist when the pastor no longer holds his office. When the new pastor assumes his responsibilities, he often will reappoint these two advisory bodies to resume their responsibilities. Until next week….May the Lord Give You Peace….kjl

he comes, and do everything we can to make this transition continue smoothly.

We have a number of programs in the parish that help build community: for example, Pathways of Justice, Women in Con-versation, Senior Yoga classes, the Young Adult Ministry, and others. The Transition Team is also planning more Spirit and Life Gatherings for June and for July. These types of events help us continue to grow in community and in our Franciscan spirituality – watch the bulletin for more information about these and other opportunities.

St. Francis said “We should seek not so much to pray, but to become prayer.” Pope Francis said “You pray for the hungry, and then you feed them. That’s how prayer works.” Both of these wise quotes remind us that we always need to pray, but that we also must actively engage in making our prayers become reality. That is exactly what’s been happening here at St. Francis, and will continue to happen as we journey down this path together.

MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBRANCE

On the weekend of May 28/29, we will remember and honor our family and friends who gave their lives in the

service of our country. We invite you to record those names in our Parish Book of Remembrance which will be out near the baptismal font and paschal candle.

As we honor those who have died, we strive to reach the day when disagreements will be settled without war. And we pray for all those who have been uprooted from homelands rav-aged by war.

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love.

Secular Franciscan Formation

I t is not too late to get involved! The third and final open meeting regarding formation of the Secular Fran-

ciscan Fraternity at St. Francis will occur Sunday May 22 in Brunsman Hall from 1:15pm-3:30pm. The formation process is just getting underway for those who attended previous meetings, so join us today if you would like to learn more about making this journey. The commitment is two hours per month. Currently meetings are being sched-uled on the 4th Sunday of each month. If you cannot attend today, new sessions will be offered in the future, so watch the bulletin, our website and Facebook page for details.

This Weekend:A Smaller Footprint: Care of Creation Bike/Walk/Share-a-Ride Weekend

Writing of the need to ad-dress our role in a warming

climate, Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si raises practical imperatives for us to consider: “Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming, or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it.”

Franciscan Pathways of Justice is hoping parishioners will continue to seek opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint, including the ways we travel to worship together. An opportunity to begin to do that is to participate in our “Bike/Walk/Share-a-Ride Weekend” for the Masses on May 21 and 22.

A Blessing of the Bikes will occur on Sunday May 22 at 11am near the children’s gym equipment in the school parking lot. All bikes welcome!!

Please give some thought to what means of alternative transpor-tation will work for you. For those choosing to bicycle, valet bike parking will be offered on Sunday. If you live too far away or are not able to try walking or cycling, maybe offer a fellow parishio-ner a ride! For more information contact Richard Hernandez at [email protected] or at 443-8084 x114.

St. Francis LGBT Ministry

We are in the process of developing our activities plan for 2016-2017, based on our Catholic Faith,

Service, and Community. Those interested in assisting with this planning or providing suggestions and ideas, please contact Richard Hernandez, Director of Outreach, at [email protected]

EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY

We will soon be offering training to those who wish to serve

as Eucharistic Ministers at weekend Masses. Persons of faith, at least 16 years old, fully initiated (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation), who have a love for the Eucharist and want to share the joy of receiving the

Body and Blood of Christ with others are welcome. If you can commit to being on a team that serves on the same weekend every month and to coming early on your day of service and staying after Mass to help clean the sacred ves-sels, then this ministry may be for you. If interested, please contact Beth White, Director of Liturgy, at the Parish Office or [email protected] And watch the bulletin for training details.

Prayer for The Church in Transition

O faithful God, as your people, we cherish our memories and our history as a sacred gift.

We ask you to guide us in our time of transition.

We need your wisdom that we might be receptive to change, conversion and growth.

We need your grace to redirect our hearts that we may be willing to continue offering ourselves in joyful service to one another.

Do not allow fear, ignorance or pride to limit the work of your Spirit, nor custom to prevent the creativity within us from bearing fruit.

Open our hearts to the call of the Gospel.

Give us courage and renewed hope that we may meet the challenges of being the Church of our time.

Amen.

National Prayer for Vocations to the Secular Franciscan Order

Help us to help others to recognize their vocationas a Secular Franciscan, that you have already implant-ed in their heart. Help us, so that together, we all maywork to bring the Gospel to life.

Amen.
