Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Flixton. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Tuesday evening was a night of contrasts as we put in an excellent first 45 minutes against a Maine Road side coming into the game on the back of a 3-0 thumping of league leaders New Mills at Brantingham Road a week ago today. We displayed some great football the passing and movement was top class the move for our first goal was one of the highlights of the evening for me but when we came out after the break we seemed to have retreated into ourselves. An early goal for the visitors 10 minutes after the restart rocked the team and the whole dynamic of the match changed with Maine Road becoming more and more adventurous and Town dropping deeper and deeper. In the end a draw was probably a fair result with both sides dominating a half each and indeed we were lucky not to have lost the game as the visitors had two good chances in added on time with Dale Newbrook making a good save and a defensive clearance off the line as we nearly grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. On the positive side from Tuesday evening it was nice to see Daley Woods build upon his goal against Padiham last Saturday with a brace against Maine Road and he seems to be growing in confidence at the moment. Liam Pearson also continued his excellent start to the campaign netting his thirteen goal of the season so far moving his into joint second place in the top goalscorers list. When you consider that he was banned for a couple of matches and also missed the Vase game against Brodsworth through injury this is no mean feat. Onto this afternoon’s visitors, Flixton as currently lying at the wrong end of the table having not had the best of starts to the campaign, as we at Town know it only takes a couple of decent results to see you rocketing up the table as a couple of weeks ago we were lying in eighteenth place and now we sit in the top half of the table. Flixton recorded an excellent 4-1 home win over Congleton Town at Valley Road on Wednesday evening and will come into this afternoon’s contest full of confidence that that can be the turning point in their season. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division encounter with Flixton FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a pleasant journey and along with today’s match officials and our own home support are treated to an entertaining match.

Value for money is certainly what was on offer on Tuesday evening as Town and Maine Road battled out a 3-3 draw here at Ashton Town. The game was completely dominated by Town during the first half and deservedly we went into the break 3-0 up having played some of our best football to date. Two goals from Daley Woods and one from Liam Pearson looked to have put Town well on the way to maximum points but Maine Road with the second half ‘hill’ advantage and no doubt a blasting at half time proved what tough characters they are and battled back to 3-3 with an 89th minute equaliser. To be honest we could have been five or six clear by the break but we had to rely on a little good fortune and some manic defending to ensure our South Manchester visitors didn’t pinch the three points in the dying seconds. On reflection probably a fair result with both sides dominating a half each and Lee Riley will be looking to build on the first half performance and look to extend our recent good run - after all Road had beaten league leaders New Mills 3-0 last Saturday.

Today’s visitors Flixton brought to an end a run of poor form when on Wednesday evening they entertained high flying Congleton who were thumped 4-1 at Valley Road, which included an Ashley Mullholland hat-trick. Flixton have been on the wrong end of some tight encounters recently including a 1-0 defeat against New Mills while losing out by the odd goal in five on their visit to Squires Gate.

On the player front we have lost the services of Brian Hatton who has sought regular first team football at Atherton LR - our best wishes go to Brian who has been an excellent servant to the club. Peter Birch has recently returned after a spell late last season at Skem’ and more recently having played against us for Formby. It was nice to see Phil Mitchell back on Tuesday evening and although he didn’t get on the pitch I am sure he will be pushing for a place in the next few weeks. Luke Faulkner, Mike Fargher and Mike Deakin are currently absentees with injury while Iain Dyson was working away for Tuesday’s game against Maine Road.

In Town Today . . . Flixton Football Club were formed in 1960 and have enjoyed a spectacular rise since. They began as an amateur side in the Manchester and Wythenshawe League and in 1963 switched to the Lancashire & Cheshire League, winning the third division at their first attempt. In 1973 Flixton moved to the Manchester League and into their present home at Valley Road. They were runners up in the Manchester League in 1979, 1982 and 1986. Having transformed their facilities Flixton were accepted into the North West Counties League Third Division in 1986 and finished as runners up

in their first season. That year they also reached the final of the Manchester Premier Cup and the semi-finals of the Divisional Cup. In 1987 the League was reorganised into two divisions following the departure of a number of clubs to the expanding Northern Premier League. Flixton were placed in the new Division Two and won promotion again as runners up, this time to Ashton United. Flixton finished their first season in the top flight in the top half of the table, helped by the goal scoring of Gary McDonald who ended the season as the leading goalscorer in the League. The next step forward for Flixton was the erection of floodlights in 1989 and in 1993 they reached the last 64 in the FA Vase for the second consecutive season. The season 1993/4 was a disappointment, with relegation back to the second division. Determined to reverse the downward trend and turn things around, Flixton appointed Dalton Steele as manager for the following campaign and this proved to be an inspired move. The club immediately won promotion back to Division One as Champions and reached the final of the Division Two Trophy. The same season saw the completion of their £500,000 clubhouse. In 1995/96 Flixton gained promotion to the UniBond League by winning the title with a seven point advantage over Newcastle Town. Winning the Division Two title and Division One title in consecutive seasons was a remarkable feat. Burscough stopped Flixton completing a “double” by defeating them in the League Cup final at Gigg Lane. Flixton’s first season in the UniBond League, 1996/7, saw them reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing to Morecambe, and the 3rd round of the League Cup with a defeat at Accrington Stanley. The club were shocked in November 1996 when Dalton Steele resigned after two highly successful seasons. Reserve Team manager Alan McGreevey was appointed as Steele’s replacement and he guided Flixton to a respectable 13th place. At the end of the season, McGreevey resigned following a dispute with the club. Dave Morris was appointed the new manager and he brought in Chris Nicholson as his assistant. After a run of poor results and performances, the duo were dismissed. Alan McGreevey was reappointed with a mandate to stave off relegation which he did and the team finished 17th, ensuring McGreevey kept his job for the following season. The 1998/9 season saw an improvement with the team finishing in 16th place. The turn of the century saw Flixton experience their worst season for seven years. McGreevey was sacked and Dave Garner brought in from Salford City, but he could do nothing to stop the rot and the team were relegated back to the North West Counties League.

. . . Flixton Football Club Kevin Aston was appointed the new manager for the start of 2000/1 season, With the team struggling back in the North West Counties League, Aston was relieved of his duties and Dave Norman brought in. Flixton just missed out on a second relegation in two seasons when a final day 1-1 draw with Leek CSOB saved Flixton but relegated Leek. 2001/2 started just as badly for the club and Norman resigned to be replaced by Dave Mitten. Results didn’t improve until January when Dalton Steele returned to the club as manager. Flixton still ended the season in a relegation position. However, with changes in the UniBond League meaning that no clubs were relegated, Flixton were saved from relegation. The 2002/3 season started well enough, but in October Steele left for the second time to take up a position at Altrincham. Gary Thomas took over but an awful run saw them slump to the bottom of the table. In March the clubs main financial backer pulled out, the manager resigned and a number of first team players left the club. Tony Henderson was appointed manager but he could not save them from relegation to Division Two. In 2004/5 they were found guilty of player irregularities and had 21 points deducted. The club secured promotion in 2005/6 finishing second behind FC United. They had a slow start to the season, but ended it in fine style, going on a sixteen game unbeaten run. On top of that Flixton won the Division Two Trophy, defeating Winsford United 2-1 at Trafford. The team also reached the semi-finals of both the League Challenge Cup and Manchester Premier Cup. The 2006/7 season saw them finish 13th in Division One their best North West Counties League finish since winning the title back in 1996, this was further improved upon last term when Flixton finished in 8th place. In 2008/9 the management team and majority of players left half way through the season. The new management team of Lloyd Morrison and Steve Hardy had to quickly bring a new team in from scratch and did well to avoid relegation, finishing in 20th place.

Match Report Tues 12th October 2010 Vodkat League, Premier Division - Town 3-3 Maine Road With a dire England display on TV at the same time the smart punter was visiting Edge Green Street for a cracking match for the neutral and a great advert for Vodkat League action. This contest was a game of two halves as Town dominated the first period and could have scored more than the three goals they went into the break leading by only to follow it with a second half performance where they dropped deeper and deeper and were lucky to get away with a point. Town dominated the opening quarter of the game with Marc Stephens, Ben Kay and Daley Woods all having chances but failing to test Andy Jones in the visitors goal. With 16 minutes on the clock Liam Pearson latched onto a an excellent through ball from Peter Birch and looked to be 1on1 with the goalkeeper but and vital, well timed challenge from Stephen Cheetham saw the ball behind for a corner. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when a fantastic flowing move saw Woods and Pearson link up with the former finishing off the move by powering the ball home past Jones in the Maine Road goal with a sublime finish. A couple of minutes later Woods turned supplier as he linked with Pearson and his shot went just over the crossbar. With the half hour mark approaching a free kick was half cleared by Josh Gittings and collected by Pearson who found Woods and his shot beat Jones but not the crossbar. Town doubled their advantage late in the half when Stephens sent a pinpoint corner into the box from the left and Woods rose highest beating Jones to the ball and headed home to double his and the hosts lead. Moments later Dave Garnell almost netted to make it 3-0 as he steered a header inches wide of the right hand upright from a set piece. In the last minute of the half Town did make it three as Woods showed his pace to latch onto a through ball and get to the byline where he pulled the ball back towards Birch, his shot was parried by Jones in the Road goal but he only pushed it into the patch of Pearson who slotted home to notch his thirteen of the campaign. If the first half was one of bliss for the Town faithful then the second half was quite the opposite. Once the visitors eventually appeared from the dressing room after what one would suspect to have been a dose of the “hairdryer” treatment they bossed the second stanza. Ten minutes after the restart Liam Beckford found space 20 yards out on the right and made no mistake finding the left hand corner of the net to spark the revival. Just before the hour it took an excellent block by Garnell on the line to stop Steve Hibbert reducing the visitors arrears further before a corner on the right was worked short and Beckford’s delivery was headed home centrally by defender Gittings. At the other end Town were threatening sporadically, Woods collected a through ball and round the goalkeeper wide in the penalty box his effort was on target but Cheetham did well to get in position to clear the danger. A surging run from Birch saw the end result of his shot being turned behind for a corner and nothing came from the set piece. With just one minute of normal time remaining it appeared as if Town had weathered the storm but the game still had a couple of incidents remaining. A good move down the right for the visitors saw Beckford deliver the ball into the ball and it squirmed its way to the far post where substitute Alastair Holden tapped home with his first touch after coming off the bench moments earlier. In added on time Town had to be alert to keep a share of the spoils in a game they looked to have in the bag at the interval as Dale Newbrook made a sharp save from Declan O’Shea and Hibbert had an effort blocked on the line with the loose ball being cleared from danger. The final whistle was greeted with a mixture of relief and dismay from Town, here’s hoping that we display all the positives from the first half display and none of the negatives of the second half when Flixton visit on Saturday. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before

sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Liam Ryder: Another summer 2010 signing by Lee Riley, 22 year old Liam hails from Rainhill and is a left sided midfield player who also has an eye for the odd goal.

Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables. Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

Town Travel with Toyota St Helens Town main sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool are delighted to announce an additional sponsorship package as the Merseyside dealership have agreed to a unique way of supporting the club’s travel arrangements for their forthcoming FA Vase 2nd Round encounter. Town’s opening three rounds of this season’s FA Carlsberg Vase have all been at ‘home’ (two at Atherton Collieries and one at Ashton Town) but the 2nd Round sees the 1987 Vase winners paired with Koolsport Northern Counties East League Premier Division outfit Winterton Rangers who are based in North Lincolnshire. Johnsons have agreed to cover the costs of any Town supporter wishing to travel on the official club coach which could net the club a significant sum and save each travelling fan the usual coach fee of £10.

Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, explained, “We had agreed earlier in the season that we would look at additional support for the club and this is an opportunity to ensure there’s a good level of support at an important FA Vase fixture.” He added, “While we know the club will profit from any additional sponsorship money, the players and management will also benefit from a good travelling support, so the more supporters the better.” Club Chairman John McKiernan said, “This is

another great gesture of support from Johnsons and hopefully it will encourage a few new faces to make the 120 mile journey and cheer the lads to victory.” He added, “There’s something about an away tie in the FA Vase and I am sure anyone travelling with us will have a great day and hopefully we’ll be able to celebrate a win on the journey home.” Town’s recent relocation to Ashton Town has also seen Johnsons Toyota Liverpool make an offer to provide FREE return transport for Town fans travelling to ‘home’ games at Edge Green Street. Vodkat League News Colne Keep The Momentum Going

An impressive start to the season, with just one league defeat so far, sees Colne nicely positioned in the promotion chasing pack. It's a start that has pleased manager Nigel Coates, who is happy that his side have carried on from where they left off last season. "I said at the start of the season we needed to keep up the momentum we had at the end of last season, where we lost only one of our last twenty games, and we have done in the main. There's not been many times so far that we've let ourselves down, maybe only the Winsford game (Colne's only league defeat so far) and definitely in the Vase at Irlam.”

"The Irlam game was a major disappointment, we just didn't turn up for some reason. We never underestimate anyone, but equally when we turn up anywhere right now we expect to win. But at Irlam there was probably only one player that did himself justice on the day. You just have to put that down as being a bad day at the office, but it was very unfortunate and very disappointing that it happened in the FA Vase." Colne's start has been achieved with largely the same squad that served them well last season, which is made up predominantly of local players, many of whom have come up through the club ranks. It's a policy Nigel has been committed to for some years, and the success he has had with it means he has no plans to abandon it. "The youth set up started some time ago and we've probably had more come through the youth system than most other clubs in the league. You've got to give kids a chance and a lot of clubs don't. It raises a few eyebrows at times, but I've managed to get some good established first team players out of it. I've probably brought two or three through every season, and there's one or two more in the ranks now who can make it if they up their game a bit. "We have a really good dressing room, there are a lot of local lads which really helps to create a good atmosphere, and we've got a lot of players who will play while carrying knocks, which some lads these days don't. It's a real bonus to have kept so many of them here for a number of years, because you know what to expect from them, you know what you are going to get . The only problem is they can still be a bit naive at times, and a good example of that was against Alsager (last Saturday). We were 3-0 up and cruising and then all of sudden it was 3-2 and you only need one bobble or break against you and you've dropped two points. Fortunately we managed to see the game out, but we should have been out of sight and gone on to score four or five. But as long as they learn from it that's the main thing." It's tempting to suggest that with Nelson's demise in the summer, Nigel will have a larger pool of players to choose from in the Pendle area in future. But he doesn't see that having much impact in the near future. "It didn't make any difference to this season's squad, as Nelson tended to bring players from all over, rather than just local lads. It might make a difference in the next two or three years when you get lads coming through at 16-17 years old who are of decent quality. If they are Nelson lads they may have gone to Nelson if they were still in the league, and maybe now they will come to us. But that won't affect anything for two or three seasons I don't think."

Clitheroe’s Groundsman Passes Away It is with regret that we anounce that our groundsman Keith Lord has passed away after a short illness. A few weeks ago Keith (pictured right) was taken ill whilst at the ground, when he was preparing to lock up for the night after players training. He had suffered a stroke. Keith was taken to Blackburm Royal then transferred to

Preston. His health deteriorted and he died in Blackburn. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Keith had been our groundsman for over 50 years. He received a long service award in 1988 from the Lancashire FA. Keith has also been Chairman, acting Manager and committee member. He was willing to undertake any job that needed doing at the ground and there were plenty. All the work he did do over the years was done without payment. Keith used to turn out in all weathers to get the pitch ready for matches, sort out the kit and at times has even taken the kit home to wash. The Lord family have been connected with the Club for over 70 years, and Keith's father Arthur was a former chairman. Keith will be sadly missed in the football family particulary in Non League circles and by all connected with Clitheroe FC.

Around The Grounds Helsby Community Sports Club - Helsby FC

The pre-season schedule continued with a trip which Town have take for three consecutive seasons to West Cheshire League, Division One Helsby. The Helsby Community Sports Club is exactly what you would think it was! The complex houses a rather large clubhouse building which includes the changing rooms and the bar has the usual facilities you would expect from a sports or working mens club with a couple of snooker tables etc. The rest of the complex houses three floodlit all weather tennis courts, two floodlit bowling greens, two “well stocked” fishing pools, two rugby pitches

and of course the reason we were in the local area a football pitch! The site is obviously quite big to house all these facilities and the football pitch is off to the far left at the back of the complex down a narrow lane which opens out into the ground. The football club have had a couple of promotions in the past four seasons and the site is not a bad little ground for the West Cheshire League standard. There is post and rail around the perimeter of the pitch with a covered stand with a small amount of seating in a central location on the far side of the pitch. This is the only area of seating and cover in the ground. The rest of the ground is open and the standing area’s are grassed which at the time of our visit was in need of cutting, with the large rabbit population in the area (given away by the sign on the bowling green to keep the gate shut to stop the critters damaging the plush surface) the long grass and cover up many a rabbit hole and twisted ankles were a plenty on the night! Luckily for us the weather held and there was no rain to trouble us but the hosts did more than enough of this and ran out winners on the evening. The ground would need a lot of improvements if Helsby were looking to advance into the Vodkat League as their playing standard at the moment far outweighs the ground.

All Our Yesterdays . . . St. Helens Town Programme Review – Part 2 Non-league football programmes from the 1950s and early 1960s are hard to come by these days, as many clubs failed to issue them and those which did issue had only very small print runs. St. Helens Town appear not to have issued programmes for several years after they were relegated for the final time from the First Division of the Lancashire Combination in 1955/56. A small, 4-page single sheet programme, printed on very flimsy paper, was issued for the game against Bacup on 3rd December 1955. Nearly three of the four pages were taken up by advertisements, among which were Swift’s High Class Fish and Fruit Dealers of 68 Peckers Hill Road, Rod Radio Television and Radio Engineers of Liverpool Road, St. Helens, W. Squires Hairdresser who promised service and satisfaction at his premises at 40 Ellamsbridge Road whilst Thompson’s Fish and Chips were said to be open daily along the same road. The programme was priced at 2d. Later on that season, for the match on Good Friday, 30th March, Lancaster City produced a six page programme, with extensive notes. The league table made depressing reading for Town, rooted to the bottom of the table with only three wins and two draws from 31 games played. Indeed, they would only take one more point from their remaining 7 games. A whole page was taken up by an advertisement for the British Empire Cancer Campaign. Prescot Cables published an 8-page programme with a pink cover for the visit of Town in the First Round of the Lancashire Junior Cup in January 1959 and the Cables team included John Quinn, the former Town player, before he went on to greater things with Sheffield Wednesday. John scored a goal that day, his fifth of the season. The programme was priced at 3d. Earlier the same season, Town travelled to Llandudno for an FA Cup game on 20th September. The programme, costing 3d, consisted of 6 pages, one of which carried pen pictures of the Town team, which was John Critchley (in goal), Maurice Topping, David Morris, Stan Ashcroft, Eric Moore, John Cooke, Ken Anderton, Dick Barnes, Graham Jones, Roy Prescott and Ray Fairweather. Among the reserves were Don Ashcroft, George Aspinall and Ben Jones. Town lost 3-0. Droylsden entertained Town in a Lancashire Combination Second Division match at the Butcher’s Arms on 21st October 1961, issuing an 8-page programme priced at 3d. The programme made no mention of St. Helens Town, other than listing the team on the centre page. The Bloods’ near neighbours Ashton United entertained Town in an FA Cup tie at

. . . Programme Review Part 2 Hurst Cross on 7th September 1963 and the 3d. 8-page programme had several blank panels beckoning advertisers. Again, no mention of the Town. The following month saw Town travel to the Showground to take on Great Harwood in a Second Division game. The cover of the 3d. programme had exactly the same sketch of a player, but the programme was only a single sheet, folded to make 4 pages, with notes on the back cover. The only reference to Town was that they were “lingering in the bottom half of the league table.”

Back to the FA Cup again the following season and Town travelled to Moss Lane to play Altrincham on 19th September. The programme, priced at 4d. ran to 16 pages, mostly packed with adverts, but there were four pages of written features and comment but, sadly, nothing about the Town. Among St. Helens’ players that day were Derek Hennin and Eric Bond, who still attends Town’s games on a regular basis. Our final offering this week is the Nelson v St. Helens Town programme from a midweek league fixture in September 1965. Like the Great Harwood programme, it ran to only 4 pages, with typed teams on the centre pages and typed comments on the back page, the rest of the programme pre-printed

with adverts for the whole season. The curiously named “Thong Hong” Chinese Restaurant served special 3-course lunches daily at an attractive 3/6d. (17.5p) or the outdoor types were offered Victory V gums and lozenges to keep you warm and bring good cheer! GLYN JONES

Vodkat League News Caretaker Manager Appointed At Rossendale

Following the departure of John Hughes and Mickey Graham from Rossendale United, the club has announced the appointment of Paul Colgan as Caretaker Manager. Paul (pictured right) has been on the coaching staff at Rossendale United since early 2010. He holds FA Coaching qualifications and has experience of Management at clubs in the North West Counties, Northern Premier and Conference Leagues. He will be joined at Dark Lane by Garry Brown as Assistant and Paul Williams as coach. In the interests of continuity, and to afford Paul and his team a realistic opportunity of making a difference, the Directors have decided to appoint the

Caretaker Manager to the end of 2010, whereupon the position will be reviewed. Club Chairman Steve Hobson said: "We have had a massive amount of interest in the club which would, if handled properly and fairly, take a long time to process. Paul is very keen to change the fortunes of Rossendale United and it would not be right to simply 'use him' for a few games, whilst we bring someone else in, only for more change to occur. "If we did not have confidence in Paul we wouldn't have had him part of the backroom team in the first place, nor placed him in charge as Caretaker Manager. I am sure this decision will disappoint a great many applicants for the Manager's position, however, after discussions with Paul and his team, we believe it is the right thing to do in the best interests of everyone, and will maintain our reputation as a club with honesty and integrity."

Walking through the grounds of his church one morning, a vicar comes across a group of youngsters sitting on the grass and talking. Overhearing some of the conversation, he realises that they are having a competition to see who can tell the most outrageous story about his or her relations with the opposite sex. Judging by the content of some of the stories he’s hearing, the vicar feels compelled to step in and offer some moral guidance. “When I was your age, I never even thought about the opposite sex,” he says, haughtily. The group goes into a huddle. “Okay,” says one youth, after a few whispers. “You win.”

A guy goes shopping in a supermarket and buys one bar of soap, a small loaf of bread, one carton of semi-skimmed milk, one apple, one banana, one orange, a box of muesli, one carton of ready prepared mixed salad, and a frozen pizza. As she rings up his purchases, the checkout girl looks at him and smiles. “You’re single, then,” she observes. “How did you guess?” he asks, blushing. “It was simple,” replies the girl. “You’re ugly.” A blonde is playing Trivial Pursuit and, when it’s her turn, she rolls the dice and lands on ‘Science & Nature’. Her question is, ‘If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?’ She ponders for a while before asking, “Is the vacuum on or off?” A man goes into hospital for an ear transplant, and is given a pig’s ear because there is a shortage of human donors. (It was his left ear - the surgeon did not make a right pig’s ear of the operation!). He returns to the hospital a few weeks later for a check-up, and the surgeon pronounces his satisfaction at the way the ear has taken. “How’s your hearing?” he asks the patient. “Not too bad,” replies the man, “although there is a lot of crackling!” A man is towing his boat home from a fishing trip when his car breaks down. He doesn’t have his mobile phone with him and he can’t find a phone box nearby, so he decides to call for help on his marine radio. He climbs aboard his boat, switches on the radio and tunes in to the frequency for the Coastguard. “Can you give me your approximate location?” asks the officer who has responded to the call. “I’m on the A570, about two miles from Ormskirk,” replies the man. There follows a long silence from the officer, before a puzzled voice asks, “Just how fast were you going when you reached the shore?” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
