El Santo Evangelio Según San Mateo (Mt 20, 1-16)

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola: “El Reino de los cielos es semejante a un propie-tario que, al amanecer, salió a contratar trabajadores para su viña. Después de quedar con ellos en pagarles un denario por día, los mandó a su viña. Salió otra vez a media mañana, vio a unos que estaban ociosos en la plaza y les dijo: ‘Vayan también ustedes a mi viña y les pagaré lo que sea justo’. Salió de nuevo a medio día y a media tarde e hizo lo mismo.

Por último, salió también al caer la tarde y encontró todavía a otros que estaban en la plaza y les dijo: ‘¿Por qué han estado aquí todo el día sin trabajar?’ Ellos le respondieron: ‘Porque nadie nos ha contratado’. Él les dijo: ‘Vayan también ustedes a mi viña’.

Al atardecer, el dueño de la viña dijo a su administrador: ‘Llama a los trabajadores y págales su jornal, co-menzando por los últimos hasta que llegues a los primeros’. Se acercaron, pues, los que habían llegado al caer la tarde y recibieron un denario cada uno.

Cuando les llegó su turno a los primeros, creyeron que recibirían más; pero también ellos recibieron un de-nario cada uno. Al recibirlo, comenzaron a reclamarle al propietario, diciéndole: ‘Esos que llegaron al últi-mo sólo trabajaron una hora, y sin embargo, les pagas lo mismo que a nosotros, que soportamos el peso del día y del calor’.

Pero él respondió a uno de ellos: ‘Amigo, yo no te hago ninguna injusticia. ¿Acaso no quedamos en que te pagaría un denario? Toma, pues, lo tuyo y vete. Yo quiero darle al que llegó al último lo mismo que a ti. ¿Qué no puedo hacer con lo mío lo que yo quiero? ¿O vas a tenerme rencor porque yo soy bueno?’ De igual manera, los últimos serán los primeros, y los primeros, los últimos’’.

Meditación: Mateo 20, 1-16 Hablemos de justicia. El propietario de la parábola de hoy prometió pagar a sus trabajadores recién contratados lo que fuera justo, pero da la impresión de que, al final del día, incumplió esa promesa. Al menos, eso es lo que pen-saron los asalariados contratados al principio, pues vieron que a los que llegaron a trabajar al final les pagaba lo mismo. ¡Los estaba tratando injustamente! Pero ¿dónde está la justicia en todo esto?

El propietario tenía en mente un tipo diferente de justicia. Para él, la justicia no implicaba que cada uno obtuviera lo que merecía, sino lo que necesitaba. Cada vez que llegaba a la plaza, veía más hombres, esposos, padres, hijos, hermanos, que no tenían empleo fijo, pero que de cualquier manera debían proveer alimento, ropa y techo para sus familias. ¿Cómo podía ignorarlos? ¿Cómo podía pensar solamente en su propio beneficio?

Desde luego, los empleadores no pueden donar todo su dinero; pues también tienen familias a quienes deben cui-dar. Pero el Señor no está hablando aquí de las mejores prácticas comerciales, sino del sentido de justicia de Dios. Para él, la justicia es un asunto de tratar a todos con dignidad y respeto; de asegurar que cada persona sea amada y atendida, y asegurar que nadie se quede atrás.

¡Que diferente es la idea común que tenemos de la justicia! En el mundo escuchamos que la justicia implica re-compensa y retribución. Si trabajas duro, eres recompensado con un salario; si violas una regla, eres castigado hasta que “pagues” por lo que has hecho. Y, aunque hay algo de verdad en estas declaraciones, la justicia de Dios va más allá de este mezquino enfoque, pues incluye la generosidad y el amor, la misericordia y la compasión. Su justicia llega incluso hasta el punto de entregar a su único Hijo para salvarnos del pecado y de la muerte.

Al igual que el propietario de la parábola de hoy, tu Padre celestial te ofrece una clase de justicia sorprendente y liberadora. ¡Alábalo por tan precioso regalo!

The Holy Gospel According to St Matthew (MT 20:1-16) Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,‘ Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Meditation: Isaiah 55:6-9

My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways. (Isaiah 55:8) There’s no doubt about it—there are times when we just can’t understand why God doesn’t see things our way. Why doesn’t he just give us the job we want or the healing we are asking for or the reconciliation we long for? It would make so much sense, Lord, just to do what I’m asking. But we also know that, in this life at least, we won’t always understand God’s ways. They are as far above us as the heavens are to the earth (Isaiah 55:9). Today’s Gospel illustrates this point exactly. Who would pay the same wage to the laborer who arrived early and the one who arrived an hour before quitting time? Only God can be so generous as to want to care equally for all those who come to him, whether they arrive early or come much later. And that’s why we can be thankful that God’s ways are so far above our own. Look at how the Lord cared for his chosen people over the centuries. Even though there were many occasions when he could have abandoned them, he never did, no matter how far they had strayed. They only had to seek him to find mercy (Isaiah 55:6-7). Each week at Mass, we are privileged to witness God’s mercy in action, when he transforms ordinary bread and wine into Jesus’ Body and Blood. What a God we have, who loves us so much that he gives us not only his mercy but his very self in the Eucharist! This is so much beyond anything we could ever expect or imagine. Yes, God’s ways are above our ways. He gives his love and mercy without measure, without cost, to anyone who comes to him. Early bird or latecomer, sinner or saint—all are welcome. As we are nourished by Jesus in the Eucharist, may our ways grow to become ever more like his. “Father, I praise you for your mercy, which knows no bounds!”

CARTA DE DESPEDIDA DEL PADRE FRAY RODOLFO A LA COMUNIDAD DE SAN PABLO

¡Queridos hermanos en Cristo, Paz y Bien! Con sentimientos de tristeza y a la vez con entu-siasmo deseo expresar, primeramente a Dios y después a esta querida Comunidad Parroquial, mi gratitud por haber-me permitido servirle durante estos tres años como su pas-tor, los que dediqué en instruirles en la sana doctrina católi-ca e insistiendo constantemente en la gran importancia que existe en lograr la unidad parroquial, con la necesaria inte-gración al trabajo de los diferentes grupos y movimientos que la integran, cada uno con sus diferentes carismas pues-tos al servicio común, para que sean una Comunidad de Fe unida y fortalecida, con vista a afrontar los retos y dificulta-des propios de estos tiempos difíciles. Sepan que estoy muy agradecido y contento por el apoyo de muchos en los varios proyectos que, juntos, logramos para conseguir disminuir a solo un tercio la histórica deuda económica de más de me-dio millón de dólares con la diócesis de Wilmington, acu-mulada durante más de 13 años. Esto estuvo en el número uno de las metas parroquiales que me propuse en este trie-nio y fue su logro fruto del arduo trabajo organizado en con-junto, así como otros, como las varias reparaciones de los viejos techos y otros logros más como las celebraciones con gran calidad y participación de las fiestas patronales de las diferentes naciones de los miembros que componen la parroquia, de los festivales hispanos cada año, y el rescate de celebraciones de importante relevancia y tradición católi-ca que habían sido olvidadas, etc., que me producen mucha satisfacción porque reflejan que hemos marchado y crecido en organización y espiritualidad juntos como familia en es-tos tres años, aunque siempre será posible, con el esfuerzo, conseguir resultados aún mejores. Y también digo que, con sentimiento de entusiasmo ya que, como fraile franciscano, siempre tengo vivo el espí-ritu itinerante que nos dejó San Francisco, en la siempre disposición alegre de aportar humilde y modestamente mi granito de arena para la construcción del Reino de Dios en donde se entienda y cuando sea necesario trabajar por Él, aunque sea inevitable que el dejar grandes afectos y cariños siempre cause tristeza. En San Pablo he conocido maravi-llosas familias con deseos de crecer en santidad, con ellos he dedicado tiempo para ganar para la Iglesia unas 80 Con-sagraciones al “Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y al Inmaculado Corazón de María”, otras que, deseando profundizar en per-fección siguiendo las huellas de San Francisco de Asís tras de Cristo, continúan como grupo en formación para conse-guir en la parroquia San Pablo una fraternidad franciscana seglar, y otras muchas de grupos ya existentes que las he tenido y sentido bien cercanas en todo momento, preocupa-das de mis proyectos y necesidades personales que también las llevo en mi corazón con sumo agradecimiento por todas sus atenciones y sincera amistad. Que el Dios Altísimo y su santa Madre María, Nuestra Señora Mediadora de gracias, les sigan bendiciendo y fortaleciendo su fe de pueblo fiel a su Dios, y que el Apóstol San Pablo, patrono de esta linda comunidad parroquial interceda por Uds y les sirva de ayu-da con sus enseñanzas apostólicas para que sigan creciendo en unidad, santidad y amor. FAREWELL LETTER FROM FRAY RODOLFO TO THE COMMUNITY OF ST. PAUL

Dear Brothers in Christ, Peace and Good! With feelings of sadness and at the same time with enthusiasm I wish to express, first to God and then to this beloved Parish Community, my gratitude for having al-lowed me to serve you during these three years as your pas-tor, dedicated to instructing you in sound Catholic doctrine and constantly insisting on the great importance that exists in achieving parish unity, with the necessary integration into the work of different groups and movements that make up it, each with their different charisms placed in the common service, to build and sustain a community of faith united and strengthened, with a view to facing the challenges and difficulties of these difficult times. Know that I am very grateful and pleased for your support in various projects. Together we managed to reduce to only one third the histor-ic economic debt of more than half a million dollars with the diocese of Wilmington, accumulated over more than 13 years. This was the number one parish goal I set out in this triennium and was achieved as a result of the hard work, organizing together, to achieve various repairs of the old ceilings, celebrations with great joy and participation of the patron saint festivities of the different nations of the mem-bers that make up the parish, of Hispanic festivals every year, and the rescue of celebrations of important relevance and Catholic tradition that had been forgotten, which give me a lot of satisfaction because they reflect that we have marched and grown in organization and spirituality together as a family in these three years, although it will always be possible, with effort, to achieve even better results.

And I also say that, with a feeling of enthusiasm because, as a Franciscan Friar, I am always alive the itiner-ant spirit left to us by San Francisco, in the ever-joyful will-ingness to humbly and modestly contribute my grain of sand for the construction of the Kingdom of God where it is understood and when it is necessary to work for Him, even if it is inevitable that leaving great affections and affections always causes sadness. In St Paul I have met wonderful families wishing to grow in holiness; with them I have spent time to gain for the Church some 80 Consecrations to the "Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary." Other parishioners desiring to deepen perfectly following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Asses after Christ, continue as a group in formation to achieve in St. Paul's parish a Lay Franciscan Fraternity, and many other existing groups that I have had the pleasure to work with and felt very close at all times, concerned about my projects and personal needs that I also carry in my heart with great gratitude for all their at-tentions and sincere friendship. May the Most High God and his Holy Mother Mary, Our Lady and Mediator continue to bless and strengthen your faith as a people faithful to your God, and may the Apostle Paul, patron saint of this beautiful parish community intercede for you and help you with your apos-tolic teachings so that you may continue to grow in unity, holiness and love. Después de casi tres décadas, hoy tenemos que decir adiós a los Frailes de la Provincia del Santo Nombre. Fueron muchos los que estuvieron ministrando aquí en San Pablo, ya fuera durante el Postulantado, el Noviciado o el Sacerdocio. Son tantos que no me atrevo a mencionarlos para que no se me quede alguno, pero entre los que fueron nuestros párrocos, asociados o directores del Ministerio Hispano se encuentran: Padre Joaquín (QEPD), Padre Mateo (QEPD), Padre Larry, Padre Bill, Padre Steve, Padre Juan, Padre Chris (QEPD), Padre Todd, Padre Mike, Padre Emerson, Padre Paul Breslin y Padre Rodolfo. Y aunque no trabajó en la parroquia, reconocemos la presencia entre nosotros de Padre Paul Williams quien tenía a su cargo la Parroquia San José en Wilmington y quien vive en esta comunidad. A todos ellos les damos las gracias por haber contribuido a nuestro crecimiento espiritual y ayudarnos a crecer como parroquia. Sabemos que cada uno tuvo una forma diferente de ministrar y administrar, pero de todos ellos hemos aprendido algo. Le pedimos a Dios y a nuestra Santa Madre María que a los que aún viven, los guíen en su caminar adondequiera que vayan y sigan siempre los pasos de San Francisco de Asís. Para los que ya regresaron a la Casa del Padre, le pedimos a Dios que los tenga gozando de esa mansión eterna que nos tienen prometida a los que creemos en Él. Queridos frailes, un abrazo fraternal y nuestros mejores deseos en los años venideros. San Pablo siempre será su casa. Muchos de nosotros no sabemos cómo es nuestra parroquia sin frailes y, sin duda, los vamos a extrañar, pero desde ya agradecemos a Padre Olson por haber aceptado esta encomienda que el Obispo Malooly le ha otorgado de ser nuestro nuevo administrador y le damos la más cordial bienvenida. Todos juntos vamos a lograr que San Pablo siga adelante, mejorando cada día más, unidos como una comunidad de fe y amor que somos. Padre Olson, sea bienvenido y aquí lo esperamos con ansias de seguir en pie de lucha por nuestra unidad y crecimiento espiritual a través de su liderazgo. Dios no se equivoca y estamos seguros de que su elección ha sido providencial. ¡Dios los bendiga a todos! After almost three decades, today we have to say goodbye to the Friars of the Province of the Holy Name. Many were ministering here in St Paul, whether during the Postulancy, the Novitiate, or the Priesthood. There are so many that I dare not mention them so that I do not have any left, but among those who were our Pastors, Associates or Directors of the Hispanic Ministry are: Father Joaquin (RIP), Father Matthew (RIP), Father Larry, Father Bill, Father Steve, Father John, Father Chris (RIP), Father Todd, Father Mike, Father Emerson, Father Paul Breslin and Father Rodolfo. And although he did not work in the parish, we recognize the presence among us of Father Paul Williams who was Pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Wilmington and who lives in this community. We thank all of them for contributing to our spiritual growth and helping us grow as a parish. We know that each had a different way of ministering and administering, but we have learned something from all of them. We ask God and our Holy Mother Mary to guide them in their walk wherever they go and always follow in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi. For those who have already returned to the Father's House, we ask God to have them enjoying that eternal mansion that He has promised to those of us who believe in Him. Dear friars, a brotherly embrace and our best wishes for years to come. St. Paul will always be your home. Many of us do not know what our parish is like without friars and we will certainly miss them, but since now we thank Father Olson for accepting this responsibility that Bishop Malooly has given him to be our new administrator and we warmly welcome him. Together we will move St Paul forward, improving more and more every day, in unity as a community of faith and love that we are. Father Olson, you are more than welcome and we look forward to continuing striving for our unity and spiritual growth through your leadership. God is never wrong, and we are sure that His choice has been providential. God bless you all!

The registration for CCD classes for First Communion and Confirmation and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is already open. You can register by calling the Parish Office on Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-11:45am, or 1:30pm-4:30pm, There will also be registrations on Sundays after the 11:00am and 1:00pm Masses. The classes will start on Saturday, September 26 for first year students and on Sunday, September 27 for second year students. High School Confirmation classes will start on Monday, September 28. 2020 Share in the Spirit Tuition Assistance Collection

Dear Parishioners and Friends, Next weekend, parishioners throughout the diocese will be asked to help make the dream of a Catholic education a reality for struggling Catholic families. Monies raised through this collection coupled with the diocese’s tuition assistance endowment provides financial assistance to hundreds of deserving families who seek a Catholic education for their children but who cannot afford the full cost of tuition.

Through this collection, our Bishop is reaching out

to believing and worshipping Catholics like you to assist him in ensuring that the Catholic commitment to total education of our children does not fade away because people cannot afford it. Since the Church has the mission to educate and since this mission directly affects the quality of life we experience as Catholics, all of us have a stake in Catholic education.
