Amy and her husband were both nominated and honored with several accolades from the American Heart Association, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation and the Red Cross. Thank you to Debbie, Cory and Karen for participating in this patient reunion for both of their patients, since two lives were saved that night! And thank you to Amy and Elizabeth for stopping by Post 100 to thank the crew, it meant a tremendous amount.

Miracle Reunion

On Friday, February 19th, a patient reunion was held at Medic that best be described as a miracle!

In September 2009, Amy Jones was just five days away from giving birth to her first child. On the evening of September 6th, 2009, Amy and her husband, Arnie, retired to bed as they were anxiously awaiting the birth of their new baby girl in just a few

days. In the wee hours of Monday morning, September 7th Arnie awoke to find his wife, Amy, in cardiac arrest.

Arnie dialed 911 and was assisted by Medic Telecommunicator, Karen Burgos, Paramedic Debbie Cash and EMT Cory Pethel.

This past Friday, February 19th, 2010 Karen, Debbie and Cory were all reunited with Amy and her 5 month-old baby girl, Elizabeth. Amy thanked everyone for saving her and Elizabeth’s life that night; both mother and daughter would not be here had it not been for the hard work and determination of the field crew and instructions Arnie received

from the telecommunicator.

Debbie, Cory and Karen gave Amy and Elizabeth a tour of Post 100 and talked about the night they responded to her call. Everyone was extremely happy to finally meet again and talk about the wonderful outcome.

Both Amy and Elizabeth are doing great today! Amy’s doctors have removed all the restrictions that were placed on her after the incident and she has even pledged to walk in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk this September (just one year after her cardiac arrest)! Amy and her husband were both nominated and honored with several accolades from the American Heart

Association, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation and the Red Cross.

Thank you to Debbie, Cory and Karen for participating in this patient reunion for both of their patients, since two lives were saved that night! And thank you to Amy and Elizabeth for stopping by Post 100 to thank the crew, it meant a tremendous amount.

On Monday, February 8th, Medic hosted a patient reunion for one of our cardiac arrest survivors, Jan Pickett. Mrs. Pickett contacted Medic in January and requested that she meet with the crew and the supervisor that responded to her incident in November 2009. She wanted to personally thank them for helping to save her life on that November evening.

The crew that responded to Mrs. Pickett’s incident were Emily Little and Mali Green. Kevin Caldwell was the supervisor on duty that evening and responded as well. Emily and Mali were the first to arrive on scene when they found Jan’s husband, a CFD Firefighter, performing bystander CPR. The crew took over and proceeded with normal cardiac

protocol with the assistance of CFD Station 14. They transported Mrs. Pickett to Presbyterian Hospital and transferred care over to the ED department.

On February 8th, Jan reunited with everyone who responded to her cardiac arrest incident; the crew from CFD Station 14, our Medic crew and supervisor as well as the cardiologist

from Presbyterian Hospital. Mrs. Pickett got the opportunity to personally thank Emily, Mali and Kevin. She also spoke about that night and how she is doing today.

In addition, Mali and Emily were featured on Channel 3 News on their “Good News” segment and Kevin was interviewed by News 14 Carolina. This segment and others will be posted to the Agency website shortly. Please check the Dispatch

and MEDtv for updates.

Thanks to Mrs. Jan Pickett for reaching out to Mali, Emily and Kevin. It was truly a great reunion and wonderful to see how she is doing today. A special thank you to Mali, Emily and Kevin for your outstanding work and participation in the patient reunion.

If you have any story ideas or if there is a particular patient you would like to reunite with, please contact Kristin Young in the PR Department at [email protected] or ext 6165.

Thank you.

Another Outstanding Patient Reunion

Introducing Ways to Save with Your Health Insurance Plan

The CVS Minute Clinics are a great way to save even more money when you are sick after regular doctor business hours. CIGNA has incorporated a visit to the CVS Minute Clinic into our medical plan and the copay is treated like a regular doctor’s visit. The cost of $20/$15 for the CVS Minute Clinic is cheaper than the $35/$25 copay for an Urgent Care visit. Both Urgent Care and CVS Minute Clinics provide Medic employees with alternative options as they are much cheaper

than the $150/$125 copay of the hospital emergency room and do not have the extra associated costs.

The CVS Minute Clinic is staffed with family nurse practitioners and physician assistants that diagnose and treat a variety of common illnesses and minor injuries for patients 18 months and older.

Another great cost savings are their wellness and preventive services and vaccinations. Medic’s CIGNA plan covers

immunizations for all members including dependents for free. However, members must still pay an office visit copay if immunizations are administered at a regular doctor’s office. Immunizations received at the CVS Minute Clinics are covered 100% and there is no office visit copay. The CVS Minute Clinics are a great way to make sure your dependents get the same vaccinations you receive at work at no additional cost. For more information on the Minute Clinic, please be sure to

visit their website at http://www.minuteclinic.com/en/USA/.

Agency-Wide InService

Every penny counts—especially this tax season! Thankfully, the IRS agrees.

The IRS is allowing any charitable contributions made between January

11th and March 1st, 2010 for the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief to be included in your 2009 itemized deductions. Individuals should be sure their contributions

go to qualified charities. Most organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible donations are listed in an online searchable database. For more information, please visit www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=218678,00.html.

Don’t Miss Out on This New Deduction!

As we close out American Heart Month 2010, below are just some of the ways Medic was active in promoting the importance of being heart healthy to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.

Week 1: February 1st—5th

On February 5th, Medic launched web pages dedicated to Heart Month on the Agency’s website. Some topics included:

• Learn CPR on your Personal Cell Phone (iPhone and Blackberry)

• Heart Healthy Tips

Week 2: February 8th—12th

• On February 8th, Medic reunited with, Jan Pickett, a patient who survived a cardiac arrest in November 2009. The reunion was held at CF Station 14 and highlighted the steps that both Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department take when treating a patient in cardiac arrest.

• On February 10th, Medic (though the Lucky Hearts Campaign) along with their partners Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment (MMAE) announced the donation of AEDs to 14 CMS high schools during a CMS press conference at
