Unmasking the stigma behind TBTAMSYN JANTJIES
Tuberculosis (TB) is a massive disease inour communities, and many people arestill in the darkwhen it comes to the symp-toms and treatment. TB Proof has takenit upon themselves to educate people andcreate more awareness about this viraldisease.
Dalene von Delft, one of the co-founders,says “There is still too much stigma surroun-dingTBand somanyhealth careworkers con-tract this disease, we need to educate them onhow to look after themselves properly”. Beinga health care worker herself, Von Delft con-tracted multi-drug resistant TB in 2011 andwas on medication for 18 months to treat theTB. “When we started out we focused mainlyon health care workers andmedical students. We realised they are not trained inTBpreven-tion,” explains Von Delft during a visit to theHelderberg Gazette. She says they saw the need and couldn’t just
leave colleaguesuneducated anduninformed.“Whenwegoout to talk topeoplewenormal-
ly start with a personal story to break the iceand lessen the initial stigma. What peopledon’t understand is that TB is a real risk and
the general public need to know what thesymptoms are and also understand that it isa curable disease. We want to get to the pointwhere people won’t be ashamed or scared toask for a TB test or when they have to go andget their medication at the clinics.”With World TB Day celebrated today, 24
March, the organisation will be continuingwith their Unmask Stigma Campaign. “TheUnmask Stigma Campaign is the one day weget to make people with TB feel less insecureabout their situation. We all put on masks forthe whole day and we also have a march inthe Cape Town CBD wearing our masks. It isreally just the only day of the year TBpatientsget to be completely themselves”, she says.TB Proof has already made international
connections and is recognised by the WorldHealth Orginisation and gets invited to talksregularly. “We have been invited to so manydifferentparts of theworld toaddress commit-tees and parliamentarians on what needs tobe done for TB prevention and the treatmentof it,” says Von Delft. If you are affected by TB and would like to
reachTBProof for support or become a volun-teer you can contact Dalene von Delft on [email protected] or visit their websitewww.tbproof.org for more information.

Direk Jansen: I am visiting and willbe moving here soon but I have ex-perienced much worse so I won’treally say that the N2 is a danger-ous piece of road.
James Toto: I really think that thereneeds to be a heavy security pre-sence on the N2. Robbers and hi-jackers have too many opportuni-ties to carry out these maliciousacts on innocent people driving onthat road.
Cody Thompson: It’s a very dangerous stretchof road. A friend of mine got hit with a brickin his face thatwas thrown fromabridge throughhis windscreen. He had to undergo reconstruct-ive surgery. Three weeks ago more friends ofmine were held at gunpoint somewhere alongthe N2 as well. It is not safe to be anywherenear the N2. There are always people watchingyou and police and emergency services are nev-er on time, which just makes things worse.
Mpho Tsalikuba: I regularly drive onthe N2 and I must admit that I amscared to drive there at any timeof day. When you see people wal-king along the road or crossing theroad you never know what is goingto happen next.
