Ontevredenheid oorMetrorail se nuwe tarieweMetrorail se tariewehet vanDinsdag 1 Julie verhoog.

Ambrose Carelse, a student inStrand who travels first class (Met-ro Plus) says the increase does notaffect him as much as those lessfortunate than him travelling inthird class. He does, however, saythat trains not on schedule frus-trate him. Carelse also says trainsare overcrowded and commutersoften have to stand for the durationof their entire journey.

Arendse sê treine is gereeld laatof sonder kennisgewing gekansel-leer.

Bhongo Kutu from Nomzamo alsocomplains that trains are often noton timeandareovercrowded.Kutusays there are always delays be-tween Firgrove and Faure, and thatcommuters contribute to the un-cleanliness of the trains when theydispose of waste in the passengercarriages.

Outrage over fare increasesCASSY VAN EEDEN

As of 1 July, Metrorail increased all theirticket prices.

This impacts the many lives of Helderbergresidents as they use the transport daily, saidthe Congress of South African Trade Unions(Cosatu) spokesperson Tony Ehrenreich.“This fare increase is a double blow to com-

muters in the light of the bad services that arepresently provided by Metrorail,” he said. The Helderberg Gazette interviewed several

local commuters who all agreed that the priceincreasesareunfair,especiallybecauseMetro-

rail’s servicesarecurrentlynotuptostandard.“When the train services are delayed work-

ers and commuters must take buses and taxisto get to their destinations, whichmeans extracostsontopof thecostof theweeklyormonthlyticket,” he said.“Workers also lose money for arriving late

for work due to the delays in the train servic-es.”Cosatu has opted to take class action against

Metrorail after their appeals to halt the priceincreases fell on deaf ears.Cosatu initially planned to hold a strike

against the price increases but had their appli-cation for a protected strike turned down.

Studente wil jeugsentrum beginCASSY VAN EEDEN

Hulle noem die sentrum Step Up andStand Out (SUSO).

Good results whenwe stand togetherCASSY VAN EEDEN

I have two things to discuss this week, whichon the surface may seem entirely unrelated toone another, but they do connect in some way,so please bear with me.TwoweeksagoonSaturday21June,aSomer-

setWest resident posted on the Somerset Face-book page that she needed help desperately asshe had been hijacked on the Baden Powel off-ramp inCapeTown.Withinminutes people be-gan to reply offering assistance. Some droveto the scene immediately so that she was noton her own on the dangerous road, othershelped her with finding a locksmith to changethe locks on her car before the criminals cameback to steal the car after they stole her keys.Although it was a very unfortunate situa-

tion, awondferful thing happened. Helderbergresidents united with one another to help thiswoman and keep her safe. The second topic that I would like to refer

to is flooding. I have only been a resident inthe Helderberg for a few months, and as thenotorious ‘rainy season’ draws closer I havebeen asked several timeswhether or not I have“prepared for the floods”.Have I prepared for the floods? What on

Earth do you mean? The reality is that thereare plenty of vulnerable areas in the Helder-berg that flood almost every time there areheavy rains in our area. I have often seen postson the same Facebook pagewith people askingfor food and clothing donations for residentswho have been affected by a flood.Again we see residents coming together to

assist people in need.
