TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast.

En tiempos pasados, cuando la Misa era en latín, no teníamos la oportunidad de escuchar en nuestra propia lengua las bellas palabras que Cristo pronunció durante la Última Cena y que el sacerdote repite durante la Consagración: “Esto es mi cuerpo”. . . “Esta es mi sangre”. Por tal razón los monaguillos sonaban unas campanitas indicando que algo importante estaba pasando. En ese momento los fieles levantábamos la cabeza para ver el pan convertido en cuerpo y el vino convertido en sangre. Lamentablemente el sacerdote nos daba la espalda y no podíamos ver lo que ocurría sobre el altar. Sin embargo, respondíamos con las palabras del apóstol Tomás: “Señor mío y Dios mío”. Estas palabras reconocen y adoran la presencia de Jesús en el pan y el vino. A este momento se le consideraba el más importante de la Misa. No obstante, el Concilio Vaticano II vino a enseñarnos que este es el momento cumbre, junto con toda la Plegaria Eucarística, pues toda la Misa es igualmente importante, excepto que durante la Plegaria Eucarística alcanzamos el punto más alto de la celebración. Por esa razón ya no hay campanita, pues ahora escuchamos todo en nuestro propio idioma, así como los discípulos las escucharon de Cristo, en su propio idioma.
Stephen Ministers Commissioned Today
“Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him” (Matthew 4:19-20). Today we celebrate the commissioning of 21 caring members of our congregation who have heard the call of the Lord and have left their nets to follow him. The Stephen ministers who will be commissioned today are Bea Banez, Debi Bernard, Brenda Bustillos, Manual Bustillos, Len Cesene, Lisa Corral, Mary Duvall-Robertson, Darlene Downs, Peggy Gallo, Alfonso Hernandez, Rosa Hernandez, Lisa Hudec, Andrew Hudec, Donna Juncer, Joyce Leon, Karen Morris, Nick Morris, Megan Pilarcik, Ed Pierson, Janie Pierson and Lisa Shultz. These Stephen Ministers will work with people who are experiencing such life crisis’ as hospitalization, retirement, financial setback, the loss of a loved one, or any of a number of other difficulties people face in daily living. They have the spiritual gifts to be Steven Ministers and they have participated in many hours of training learning how to carry out this ministry for the Lord. Now they stand poised, as the apostles were on Pentecost, ready to begin this caring ministry in our midst. As we commission them and send them forth to minister, let us thank God for the love and the generosity that inspired their response to God's call, and let us pray for the success of this caring ministry that they bring to our congregation and community.

"Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us." (Ephesians 5:2)
Reflection: Jesus endured crucifixion out of love for us, giving himself away that we might have life. Abortion, on the other hand, is the opposite of love, because it takes life. Love says, "I sacrifice myself for the good of the other person."Abortion says, "I sacrifice the other person for the good of myself."
Prayer: Father, fill me and all people with the same love by which your Son gave himself away on the cross. Grant that we may sacrifice ourselves, and never sacrifice others. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Reflexión: Jesús soportó la crucifixión por amor a nosotros, dándose a sí mismo para que tengamos vida. El aborto, por otro lado, es lo opuesto al amor, porque le quita la vida. El amor dice: "Me sacrifico por el bien de la otra persona". El aborto dice: "Sacrifico a la otra persona por el bien de mí mismo".
Oración: Padre, lléname a mí y a todas las personas con el mismo amor con el que tu Hijo se entregó a sí mismo en la cruz. Concede que podamos sacrificarnos y nunca sacrificar a los demás. Oramos en el nombre de Jesús. Amén.
