R25 Schoolboy killed in gang attack NICOLE MCCAIN The death of a Grade 10 pupil of Simanyene High School in Nomza- mo sparked a peaceful protest by pupils, teachers and community members who wanted to speak out against a spike in gang-related vio- lence among teenagers in the area. The Grade 10 boy was stabbed in Nomzamo on Saturday 16 March, al- legedly by a group of boys belonging to a gang in the area, says Lwandle police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama. He says the boy was stabbed in the back and chest, and police who attended the scene found him dead, lying in a pool of blood. Simanyene High then held a march on Thursday 21 March. Although the stabbing did not hap- pen at school, the principal at Siman- yene High, Monwabisi Matshoba, says the march was initiated by school management because the school “couldn’t just stand there while our children are dying”. Two suspects, aged 16 and 18, have been arrested on charges of murder. Both suspects appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 20 March, and the 16-year-old has been temporarily placed in a place of safe- ty. The older suspect will remain in police custody until a new date of ap- pearance is set by the court, says Gama. In November last year, the Gazette reported on concerns raised by school principals over the increase in gang- sterism among pupils. Eric Titipane, principal at Khanyolwethu High School, said at the time that there are two rival gangs at his school, and esti- mated that between 40 and 50 pupils are involved. Matshoba estimates about 40 pupils of Simanyene, most of them boys around the age of 16, are involved in gangs. According to Gama, the gangs ap- pear to be territorial, making it diffi- cult for youngsters to move from one area to another. “They won’t be able to go from Lwandle to Asanda Village or Nomzamo,” Gama explains. In an attempt to curb the gangster- ism, the Lwandle police has held a se- ries of public meetings, and also visit- ed schools to educate pupils on the dangers involved in gangsterism. After the recent stabbing, the com- munity set up a task team to tackle the problem. Xolani Dilifo, member of the task team, says they are not cer- tain why gangs have taken off in the area. “We’ve identified 549 boys and 79 girls in 11 gangs. But we can’t get to the core of it. It could be drugs, girls or even outside influences from Khay- elitsha or Gugulethu.” Dilifo says gangs flourish due to a lack of after-school activities. “We’re looking at projects to keep the youth busy, and we’re submitting a pro- gramme to the City of Cape Town for funding. We’re also in talks with MEC for Community Safety, Dan Plato.” Pupils and teachers of Simanyene attended the protest, which had been initiated by the school.
