Fr. Marty’s Musings Spring has sprung after a few weeks ago, but finally some-one has informed the weather. We welcome the light and warmth of longer days and glories of Easter. Fresh Holy Oils from the Chrism Mass will mark sacramental moments. The old oils and petitions fueled the Paschal fire. The light of Christ is symbolized in our new Paschal candle. The dreariness of winter has ended, and the season of fasting is over. This joyous celebration builds on faith, hope, and love. Easter Sunday is special—we renew our Baptismal Promises and we end the Mass with a double “Alleluia” to proclaim that our Lord is risen!

We welcome our visitors, college students, and reuniting families. Thank you for celebrating this most holy day with us. We would love to see you every week as Christ’s presence is realized as we gather in his name. May Easter blessings bring you Paschal joy. Together we praise God every Sunday and are sent to carry on the Lord’s work. We share the miracle of the Eucharist and each Sunday recalls the Resurrection Good News. May you and your loved ones be lifted by the joy of Easter. May the new life that faith brings you affect others as you witness to the renewal of Easter.

Please keep our confirmandi in your prayers as they enter the last week of preparation for their Confirmation next Sunday, April 28, at 4:00 p.m. Confirmation, with Baptism and Eucharist are the Sacraments of Initiation into the Church. It is appropriate that we celebrate it in the East-er season as we welcome Bishop Joseph Perry, who will seal them with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

Sharing your talents, time and treasure.

My classmate, Fr. Gary Graf, has been formally rein-stated by Cardinal Cupich. He had been asked to step away from his parish after an accusation that turned out to be unfounded. He has been cleared by state officials, the court and the Independent Review Board. Fr. Gary is from Queen of Martyrs. Copies of Cardinal Cupich’s letter to San José Luis Sánchez del Río Parish are at the exits or on-line at https://www.archchicago.org/statement/-/article/2019/04/06/letter-from-cardinal-blase-j-cupich-on-father-gary-graf.

Spring Nothing is so beautiful as spring—

When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;

Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;

The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush

With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.

What is all this juice and all this joy? A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning

In Eden garden.—Have, get, before it cloy, Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,

Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy, Most, O maid’s child, thy choice and worthy

the winning. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889)

Queen of Martyrs Students View Lenten Prayer Stations

The Q of M Women’s Ministry hosted beautiful Prayer Stations in observance of Lent. Parishioners were able to come to the St. Joseph Room after the weekend Masses on March 30th and March 31st. Queen of Martyrs students had the opportunity to walk through the Stations on the following Monday. The prayer stations reminded the parishioners and students of the importance of prayer during the Season of Lent and allowed them to take time to recount Jesus’ sacrifice so that we could have life. Parishioners and students were asked to Journey with Jesus during Lent, always remembering his Passion and Death.

The current pot is over $6,000 and growing!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As we walk on our life journeys in this world, we may often feel overwhelmed. Struggle and suffering can mark our lives because of health issues, job insecurity, family concerns, or the painful loss of a loved one. The world itself, in Saint Paul’s words, “has been groaning” (Roman 8:22), as it struggles with wars, violence, ecological degradation, economic injustice, and natural disasters. And as we are keenly aware this past year, the Church herself has struggled mightily with the shameful legacy of abuse and its mismanagement. It seems that the landscape of our lives is entirely shaped by struggle and suffering. And that might seem to be the sum and substance of it all, but, in faith, we know that it is not. Our cele-bration of the Lord’s Resurrection in this Easter season opens our eyes beyond this desperate landscape to a new and hope-filled horizon. There is more to the story than our struggle and suffering. In the Resurrection of Jesus, we can begin to see a new life ahead of us that God offers to us. As we go forth in this Easter season, I am reminded of the great Psalm 118 that the Church so often prays:

I was thrust down, thrust down and falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song; and has been my savior. There are shouts of joy and victory in the tents of the just. (vv. 13-15)

May this Easter season renew within you and your loved ones the conviction that God is your helper and an abiding awareness of your victory in the Risen Lord Jesus.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Archbishop of Chicago
